Founded in 1999, this excellent Colorado mixed vocal jazz octet jumps right into a bright, bouncing "Let It Snow," and doesn't let up until the final note of cut 13, the best "Little Drummer Boy" we've heard since M-Pact's on "Carol Commission." A very cool "Jingle Bells" cover, a crisp, ringing "Pat-A-Pan," a wonderfully sexy, upbeat "Baby, It's Cold Outside," some amazingly complex chords on "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Silent Night," a brash, scatty "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," a nice caroler's medley of "Deck the Halls/I Saw Three Ships/We Wish You a Merry Christmas/Holly and the Ivy," a moving new song, "Christmas in the Trenches" and others. "Please Have Snow" is one of the best Christmas vocal jazz collections we've heard in a long time!

One of our favorite winners of Season 4 of NBC's hit, The Sing-Off, based of course on our own Harmony Sweepstakes, bring us a country-flavored, harmony-rich smorgasbord of Christmas songs. "Full of Cheer" is exactly that, ten beautifully arranged by group members Adam and Chris Rupp, Tim Foust and Ben Bram. Minneapolis, MN-based all-male Contemporary quartet Marcoux Corner brings us a beautifully-crafted Christmas album of 10 tunes, all with cutting-edge arrangements by members of the group. Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song," "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells," the two traditional carols "Oh, Come, Oh Come Emmanuel" and "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," the pop favorites "Frosty the Snowman," "Christmas Time is Here," "Baby It's Cold Outside" (featuring Nancy Harms) and "What are You Doing New Year's Eve," both by Frank Loesser. Our final favorite is the very funny "Huge on the Luge," written by the possibly fictional Moxy Fruvous. Though not generally identified with blues, in fact barbershop does have something in common with jazz and blues alike - they are all distinctly American musical forms. As David Wright says in his liner notes describing the quartet (he also arranged four songs), "the richness of their blend evoked the texture of blues and gospel..." These 1996 gold medalists (and members of the heralded Masters of Harmony Chorus), are indeed staking out their own forty acres of barbershop territory. Sublime adaptations of the title track, "How High The Moon," "Satin Doll," "Steal Away" and "Baby It's Cold Outside" are just some of the wonderful surprises in store. While staying true to the core structure of barbershop, these arrangements are festooned with borrowed inflections from other styles, and gently evoke the romance of days gone by!

Panache : Four Friends - Best of   

The Bad News is, the former Sweet Adelines Queens of Harmony, the four lovely, talented women of Panache, have disbanded and are no longer singing together as a group. The Good News is, they left us this wonderful 2-CD set to remember them by! We won't go into the individual titles, but suffice to say that there's a "whole bunch" of our favorites on these two CDs, including selections from discontinued Panache titles. These are the songs that took them to Sweet Adelines Gold, and that made them one of our best selling Barbershop titles. Kim Hulbert has led the 100 singers of the veteran San Diego Chorus (celebrating 53 years of excellence in San Diego), for the last 20 years to a tremendous record of Sweet Adelines success, 7 Regional Championships, and Gold, Bronze and 2 Silver medals in International competition. "Merry and Bright" is a particularly warm and wonderful Christmas collection of 12 songs. It's actually more than that if we include one of our favorites, the 3-song, nicely-narrated "Grinch Medley," which celebrates Dr. Suess' timeless Christmas classic. This celebrated chorus' third Christmas CD - eight time Society Champions, directed by Jim Clancy. The Vocal Majority's power is such that they are most affecting as voices only - the tag of "Auld Lang Syne" is proof of that. Utah-based six-man Voice Male has released seven CDs to date, including the self-produced "Jingles", which won the 1999 CARA for Best Holiday Album. Luckily, this encouraged the guys to do a sequel! Much of the arranging on these 15 songs is by group member Mike Beardon, who has a mischievious streak and a refreshing irreverence - cue the Doo-Woppy "White Christmas," sassy, silly "Baby It's Cold Outside," a live (with Mike's daughter Casie) "Rudolph," a very strange "Tractin' in a Winter Wonderland," and "The Chipmunk Song."
