"And So It Goes" is a lyric poem written by Billy Joel in 1983, though it was not released until six years later. It appeared as the tenth and final track of his album Storm Front. The original 1983 demo was released on the 2005 box set My Lives. Joel wrote the song about a doomed relationship with model Elle Macpherson. Their relationship was dramatic, as Macpherson was only a teenager while Joel was reaching his mid-30s. Joel dated Macpherson for a brief time shortly before becoming involved with model Christie Brinkley, who would ultimately become his second wife. The song is unique for Joel as it is written in iambic tetrameter. In the original demo version of "And So It Goes", Joel sings the melody simply, accompanied by a simple piano backdrop, in a style very reminiscent of a hymn. On the 1990 album version, Billy Joel sings and plays all the instrumentation (piano and synthesizers). The official video is a live take in front of a concert audience.
The single peaked at No. 37 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart in 1990. It has been covered by many subsequent artists (see "Cover Versions" below). The King’s Singers and others have developed several vocal harmony arrangements of the song, which are often performed by high school and college choirs.
On November 16, 2010, during an interview on the Howard Stern show on Sirius Radio, Billy Joel was asked what song is his best work that is least appreciated. To answer this question, he played "And So It Goes".

Secular tunes "Flanders Fields," "The Banks of the Don," "Song of the Breton Fishermen," "Un Canadian errant" and Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" are also very special. Some piano accompaniment. We enjoyed every cut of this beautifully crafted collection from talented Amabile! Songlist: Dona Nobis Pacem I, O Magnum Mysterium, Dona Nobis Pacem II, My Master From A Garden Rose, Flanders Fields, Le Temps De Vivre, Dona Nobis Pacem III, El Hambo, Rattle On The Stovepipe, iod Mar Chaidh an Cal a Dholaidh, The Banks On The Don, Song Of The Breton Fishermen, Un Canadien Errant, Dona Nobis Pacem IV, O Magnum Mysterium, Sing Me To Heaven, Sing Lullaby, Gloria In Exelcis Deo, Precious Lord, The Rain Is Over And Gone, Worthy To Be Praised, And So It Goes, Dona Nobis Pacem V An Octave Above : An Octave Above The 4 men and 4 women of An Octave Above, (named 1st runner-up at the 2005 Harmony Sweeps Chicago Regional) are a group of professional vocalists, together for only 3 years, whose repertoire includes doo-wop, jazz, standards and madrigals. This is the group's impressive debut CD of 13 songs, beginning with a jazzy, light "Chile Con Carne," a sweet Ward Swingle-arranged "All the Things You Are," and a ringingly harmonic cover of James Taylor's "That Lonesome Road." Doo-Wop classics "Come Go With Me" and "In the Still of the Night" segue nicely into Billy Joel's anthem "And So It Goes," a bluenote "There Will Never Be Another You" grows upbeat and scattish, "Tico Tico" puts a margarita in our hand and pulls us onto the dance floor, and finally we have Ward Swingle's sparkling arrangement of "Country Dances." Excellent stuff from this fast-rising Chicago octet, who we will be expecting to see at the '06 Sweeps Finals! Songlist: Chili Con Carne, When I'm Sixty-Four, All the Things You Are, Come Go With Me, That Lonesome Road, I'm With You, In the Still of the Night, And So It Goes, There Will Never Be Another You, Scat Blues, Tico Tico, A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square, Country Dances Berlin Voices : States of Mind Esther, Marc and Kristopher first sang together in the Vocal Section of Germany's Federal Jazz Orchestra in 1998 under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer. By 2000 they met Sarah and began performing as a mixed vocal jazz quartet, from small jazz clubs to the largest concert halls in Germany; performing in the Munich Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the CCH1 in Hamburg and the Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin. "States of Mind" is a mostly-accompanied, jazzy, fun collection of 11 Billy Joel hits like "Just the Way You Are," "Piano Man," a nice a cappella cover of "Honesty," "New York State of Mind," "James," "Allentown," "He's Got a Way," "Summer, Highland Falls," "And So it Goes" and "We Didn't Start the Fire." The Voices have a fresh, beautifully harmonic sound, and they perfectly capture the sophisticated, moody New York feel of Billy Joel's music. "States" is a wonderfully entertaining tribute to a remarkable composer and performer. Songlist: Just The Way You Are, Piano Man, You're My Home, Honesty, New York State Of Mind, James, Allentown, He's Got A Way, Summer, Highland Falls, And So It Goes, We Didn't Start The Fire Brava! : Tickled Pink Spirited, fun Sweet Adelines quartet Brava!, formed in 1989 in Vancouver, BC, almost immediately became the highest-ranking Canadian quartet ever, placing in the top 10 at International 6 times, grabbing Silver in Portland, Oregon in 2001, and finally winning the coveted Gold in Phoenix in September of 2003. Since then Sandy, Lynn, Elaine and Shannon have been having big fun in concert and recording this excellent studio album (Made in Canada), "Tickled Pink," also an apt description of their feelings about singing together. This vibrant, talented foursome brings us 12 songs, some belters like "All Aboard For Dixieland," "Fly Me to the Moon/East of the Sun" and "Toot, Toot, Tootsie;" and some romantic heart-tuggers like "I Will Love You 'Til the End of Time," "La Vie en Rose," "Sweet Adeline" and "I've Got You Under My Skin." There's some rampant silliness on two Weird Al Yankovic covers, "You Don't Want Me Anymore" and "One More Minute" (called "One More Contest" here), both songs with very funny parody lyrics about group annoyances and getting dumped. We particularly liked the classics, "Without A Song," arranged by our good friend Kirby Shaw, and Billy Joel's timeless "And So It Goes." Well-chosen, beautifully performed stuff by Canada's, and now Sweet Adelines', finest! Songlist: All Aboard for Dixieland, Fly Me to the Moon/East of the Sun, I Will Love You Till the End of Time, You Don't Want Me Anymore, La Vie en Rose, How Do I Love Thee?, Without a Song, Toot, Toot, Tootsie, One More Contest, Sweet Adeline, I've Got You Under My Skin, And So It Goes Cabinet Shuffle : In Cambridge... Again! British mixed sextet (2 women, 4 men) Cabinet Shuffle has been singing top-drawer a cappella in many of the classiest venues in England, for a Who's Who of corporate and professional clients. With clean, tight harmonies and sweet leads reminiscent of the Swingles and Manhattan Transfer, and a varied repertoire from Bach to the Beatles and Josquin to Jazz, the Shuffle are crowd-pleasers extraordinaire! Their recordings (their first, the excellent "It Don't Mean A Thing," "Cambridge" is #2) are equally crisp, elegant and entertaining. Beginning with two winners, "New York" and the heart-tugger "Loch Lomond," we are then treated to a vocal feast: the traditional Italian tune "Bella Calou," Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" and "The Longest Time," Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me," Harold Arlen's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Bring Him Home," John Denver's "Perhaps Love," and Lerner and Loewe's "I Could Have Danced All Night" are all delightful. It's all good, and we think that this talented group is ready for a much wider audience and some larger venues, especially over here "across the pond!" Songlist: New York, Loch Lomond, The Three Ravens, Malaguena, Bella Caiou, Le Baylere, And So It Goes, Pavane, A Nightinsgale Sang In Berkeley Square, Someone To Watch Over Me, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, I Won't Send Roses, I Dreamed A Dream, Bring Him Home, I Could Have Danced All Night, The Longest Time, Chansom d'Amour, Perhaps Love, If You Leave Me Now, Come FLy With Me Cantamus : Joy Called by one observer "probably the best girls' choir in the world," Mansfield, Nottinghamshire's (UK) Cantamus Girls Choir consists of approximately 40 girls aged between 13 and 19. Founded in 1968 by Director Pamela Cook, the Choir has consistently won international competitions such as the "Choir of the World" title 1997 Llangollen Eisteddfod, Olympic Champions title at the World Choir Games 2004 and 2006 and many others. There are 20 songs here, mostly lightly accompanied by accompanist and arranger Michael Neaum. Some of our favorites are "Look to this Day," "La Regata," "O Won't You Sit Down?," "Goin' Up-a-Yonder;" "Pretty Little Horses," "And So It Goes," "Miss You Nights" and "The Rose." Wonderful leads, perfect harmonies - "Joy" is exactly that! Songlist: Look to This Day, White Waves on the Water, The Last Spring, La Regata, Sous le Dome Epais, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, Sanctus, O Won't You Sit Down?, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, Goin' Up a-Yonder, You Raise Me Up, Pretty Little Horses, Harry, Can You Hear Me?, Hallelujah, And So It Goes, Who Knows Where the Time Goes?, Miss You Nights, The Rose Ensemble Amarcord : And So It Goes Former choristers from Bach's own church make up this German version of The King's Singers. This contemporary a cappella program ranges from Billy Joel to Supertramp to a Cuban love song, and a superb cover of Sinead O'Connor's "In This Heart". These are great male choral interpretations of popular songs that are sure to delight. Songlist: The Longest Time, New York, New York, Breakfast In America, Blackbird, Juramento, In This Heart, Somebody To Love, Only You (And You Alone), Hit The Road Jack, Rain In May, Since You Went Away, Can't Buy Me Love, Strangers In The Night, Good Vibrations, That Lonesome Road, And So It Goes Gents : The Gents in Love Dijkstra: it gives me great pleasure to present this CD, which appears in response to repeated requests. At last we have taken the opportunity to record this repertoire. How often we have had to disappoint members of the audience when we tell them that, unfortunately, there are no recordings available for the arrangements of Billy Joels Lullabye or Toni Wines Groovy Kind of Love. Here they are at last! Also included are three beautiful songs from the popular Dutch group BLF. The goal of this CD is to evoke the simple joy of singing. In my opinion, it is this quality which, in addition to or even in spite of our attempts at perfection and flexibility, is the most important to convey to an audience, and it is a quality which The Gents always try to express. Songlist: Michelle, Lullabye, Blackbird, And So It Goes, With A Little Help From My Friends, Misschien niet d e Eeuwigheid, Omarm, Dansen aan zee, Londonderry Air, The Oak and the Ash, Molly Malone, Ca' the Yowes, The Turtle Dove, Hey Jude, If I Fell, A Groovy Kind of Love, And I Love Her Groove For Thought : Groove For Thought All male Pacific Northwest sextet Groove for Thought's debut CD is here, not surprisingly titled "Groove for Thought." We last saw GFT at the 2005 Harmony Sweeps Finals, where they won both the Best Original Song award for group member Kevin Kunz' "Walk the Straighter Road" and the National Championship. "Groove" is an excellent, jazzy, beautifully arranged album, but we need to warn a cappella purists that there is a lot of accompaniment with these 14 songs. Our favorites are the two pure a cappella tunes, Kevin's wonderful arrangement of "Joy to the World," and Billy Joel's "And So It Goes." We also once again enjoyed "Walk the Straighter Road," which has some light piano accompaniment. Kevin's hot, jazzy originals "Lay It Back," "A Better Place," "Gotta Lotta Lemons," "My Perfect Day," all accompanied, are also very good; as is Chick Corea's "La Fiesta." The Kelly Kunz-arranged hymn "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" completes our favorites. GFT has some of the best original writing and arranging we've heard and a clean, pure sound that needs no accompaniment of any kind to blow us away!. Songlist: Intro (Lay It Back), Lay It Back, A Better Place, Joy To The World, And So It Goes, Interlude 1, Gotta Lotta Lemons, My Perfect Day, Lean On Me, Take My Hand, Precious Lord, Interlude 2, La Fiesta, Intro (Walk The Straighter Road), Walk The Straighter Road Heart to Heart : Lucky Day Heart to Heart, a mixed a cappella quartet and pride of Slinger, WI bring us a finely-crafted collection of Barbershop and Pop tunes. Actually a pair of married couples, these four friends have been making beautiful music together for decades, and it shows. Their song selection includes some of our favorites: "Some Lucky Day," "Route 66," The Turtles' "Happy Together," "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie," Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," "When I Fall In Love," the slightly silly "Seaside Rendezvous," the Contemporary Christian song "Mary Did You Know," "Cabaret" and "Operator." Fun stuff from four friends who love to sing, Heart to Heart! Songlist: Some Lucky Day, Route 66, Happy Together, I Fall In Love With You Ev'ryday, Choo Choo Ch' Boogie, And So It Goes, Cabaret, When I Fall In Love, Seaside Rendezous, Mary, Did You Know?, Operator, Great Is The Lord LoveNotes Quartet : Moments To Remember Brittany, Tenor, age 14; Mary, Bass, age 15; Mia, Lead, age 14 and Caitlin, Baritone, age 17 are lovely, casually dressed and very young-looking (2 of them still have braces) in a photograph on the front of the one-page liner notes of their debut CD, "Moments to Remember." On the photo on the back, they look much more mature, nicely coifed and wearing matching gowns, earrings and, oh yeah, Sweet Adelines medals around their necks. On July 22nd Sweet Adelines held their 2005 "Rising Star Quartet Contest," for groups age 25 or younger, in Greenville, South Carolina, and Sunnyvale, CA's UnderAge took the Gold! "Moments" is an impressive first CD, with 11 excellent covers, some favorites: "Whatever Happened to the Old Songs," "Mister Sandman," "This Little Piggy Went to Market," the title tune, "One Fine Day," "Java Jive," "Sentimental Journey" and the final cut, Billy Joel's "And So It Goes." We think it's a very good move on Sweet Adelines' part to encourage younger singers, and we expect great things of UnderAge! Songlist: Whatever Happened To The Old Songs, Will It Be Me This Time, Mister Sandman, This Little Piggy Went To The Market, The Moment I Saw Those Eyes, Moments To Remember, One Fine Day, Java Jive, When I'm Sixty-Four, Sentimental Journey, And So It Goes Nordic Chamber Choir : Bob Chilcott - Choral Works Born in 1955, Bob Chilcott has a fast-growing reputation as one of Britain's most popular and accessible composers of choral music. Over the past seven years he has poured his energy into the amateur choir world as a composer, conductor and choral clinician, with an emphasis on work with and for young singers. Chilcott has contributed a growing body of work to the repertoire of adult and children's choirs. As reflected in Canticles of Light, Chilcott's gifts are not limited to writing for adults, and he has gained an international reputation for his work with, and compositions for, children and young people. His song with sign language, 'Can you hear me? has become one of the most widely-performed pieces in the children's choir world and in March 2001 Chilcott himself conducted a performance sung by 2000 children at The World of Children's Choirs Festival in Vancouver, Canada. We were in the delighted 2013 Finals audience in San Rafael's Veterans Memorial Auditorium, after being blown away by the 7 Regional champs, wondering how hosts Six Appeal would measure up with their set while the Audience Favorite votes were counted. We needn't have worried-Six Appeal nailed it, reminding us as we stood and cheered how much we love these guys! "Plan A" is SA's debut album, and all 12 cuts are feel-good hits: Elton John & Tim Rice's magnificent "Circle of Life," the Doobie Bros.' rock anthem "Listen to the Music," Andy Grammer's "Keep Your Head Up," a pair of sweet, sexy originals by group members, Jordan's "Little Black Dress," and Trey's "Do I;" Gavin DeGraw & Ryan Tedder's "Not Over You," Andrew Berkowitz' "On Your Love" and Billy Joel's deathless hit "And So It Goes." Calgary's Heebee-Jeebees, who brought their manic humor south to our Harmony Sweeps Final, have 3 winners here: 'Use the Force,' 'Gitarzan' and 'Channel 12.' Quintessential's crazed country-western 'The Auctioneer' and 'Quintessential Harmony' are excellent, as is 'Let the Rest of the World Go By' by barbershoppers About Face. Contemporary group Real F/X do a hot cover of the Young Rascals' 'Good Lovin',' and No Assembly Required has a nice pair, 'Criminal on the Cross' and Billy Joel's 'And So It Goes.' Standing Room Only's very funny 'Mr. Taxman' (to the tune of 'Mr. Sandman'), OnCue's 'Name Song,' Voce's 'Let It Go,' InSync's 'The River (Sailing)' medley, CNote's folky 'Old Brown's Daughter,' The Fabulous Doo-Wop Boys' cover of Weird Al's 'One More Minute,' and CHICKAdivas' crazed 'Logdriver's Waltz' join our list of favorites. A cappella is burning brightly in the north country, and the pilot light can be found in Edmonton, Alberta! Songlist: Use The Force, The River, Almost Doesn't Count, You Won't Be Hurtin' Me (No More), Man Like Me, Logdriver's Waltz, Criminal On The Cross, Gitarzan, The Wind Is Blowing, The Auctioneer, Let The Rest Of The World Go By, Good Lovin', And So It Goes, Mr. Taxman, Quintessential Harmony, Name Song, Old Brown's Daughter, Wild West Woman, One More Minute, Channel 12, Maskowsiwin, Let It Go Voices in Harmony : Now & Then Founded in 2006 by members of the Bay Area Metro Chorus and Garden City Chorus of San Jose CA, VIH is directed by world-renowned conductor Dr. Greg Lynn. Dr. Lynn very quickly turned Voices in Harmony into one of the finest a cappella choruses in the world, winning a 3rd Place Bronze medal at the Barbershop Harmony Society's 2008 International Choral Competition in Nashville, TN. The 14 songs of "Now & Then" are pure, heartstring-tugging oldies, sung by guys who love to harmonize together-in short, the very stuff of which Barbershop was made! Be it The Turtles' "Happy Together" from 1966, the Swing hit "Beyond the Sea" from 1945, the Streisand hit "The Way We Were" from 1974, Hank Williams' classic "Hey Good Lookin'" from 1951, Brian Wilson's anthem "Surfer Girl" from 1963 or Jerome Kern and and Otto Harbach's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" from 1933-we know and love these songs. How many times have we heard Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," "Little Boy Lost," "There Used To Be a Ballpark Right Here" and "This Is Some Lucky Day"-and how many times would we like to hear them again, nailed by a top-drawer men's chorus? As a special treat, the last three bonus tracks on "Now & Then," "Diane," "Little Pal" and "In A Shanty in Old Shanty Town" are all live cuts from the 2008 BHS competition. Barbershop quartets Late Show and Realtime are special guest performers with VIH. Great stuff from local boys who made very good, very fast in the Barbershop world! Songlist: Happy Together, Beyond the Sea, The Way We Were, Little Boy Lost, Hey Good Lookin', Surfer Girl - Late Show Quartet, There Used to Be a Ballpark Right Here, This Is Some Lucky Day, And So It Goes, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, With A Little Help From My Friends, Diane, Little Pal, In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town VoicesIowa : You Must Believe in Spring The Southwestern Community College has a tradition of turning out excellent harmony singers, under the direction of the highly-respected director Phil Mattson. The six-piece mixed "Voices Iowa" is a fine example. "Pick Yourself Up" is a dizzying rendition of the Kern/Fields classic, a daring flight into the upper registers. Bach's "Largo" yields willingly to a fine scat treatment; "Come Sunday" has the same heartbreakingly beautiful arrangement as that of the Real Group, but the tone qualities of the voices are quite distinct to Voices Iowa. "What A Wonderful World" comes alive, the notes a joyous burst of sunshine on a spring morning. Songlist: What A Wonderful World, Pick Yourself Up, Largo, Revoici Venir Du Printemps, Come Sunday, Lo How A Rose E're Blooming, Love is Here to Stay, Music For Lovers, More I Cannot Wish You, And So It Goes, Look for the Silver Lining, You Must Believe in Spring Yumiko Matsuoka : To Every Thing There Is A Season Founder of legendary Boston-based Vocal Jazz group Vox One, Yumiko has always been one of our favorite vocalists and arrangers. She has two excellent collections of arrangements in the PAC catalog, "Collection Vol. 1" and "Collection Vol. 2." The Anthology "To Every Thing" is her first solo album, and it includes a piece Yumiko wrote for acoustic guitar for some friends' wedding, "Tsubasa," her arrangement of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," performed by the Western Wind with Yumiko, and her marvelous arrangements of the English Traditional tunes "Scarborough Fair," "Black is the Color" and the title tune, performed by Boston Jazz Voices. The Western Wind also shines on Yumiko's arrangements of Lionel Bart's "Where Is Love" and Lennon/McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby." Yumiko's classically accompanied arrangement of Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind," her lovely arrangement of Joanie Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," performed by Syncopation; and the Scottish Traditional "Skye Boat Song," performed by Yumiko with the women of the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble, are all favorites. "To Every Thing" is a remarkable collection, highlighting the tremendous vocal, arranging and composing talents of Vocal Jazz master Yumiko! Songlist: Tsubasa (wings), And So It Goes, Scarborough Fair, Brett, Where Is Love?, Black Is The Colour, Blowin' In The Wind, Eleanor Rigby, To Every Thing There Is A Season, Georgia On My Mind, Both Sides Now, Skye Boat Song |
