Christopher Tin : The Lost Birds (An Extinction Elegy) The Lost Birds is a musical memorial to bird species driven to extinction by humankind. Sweeping and elegaic, it's a haunting tribute to those soaring flocks that once filled our skies, but whose songs have since been silenced. It's a celebration of their feathered beauty: their symbolism as messengers of hope, peace, and renewal. But it's also a warning about our own tenuous existence on the planet: that the fate that befell those once soaring flocks foreshadows our own extinction. Songlist: Intermezzo, There Will Come Soft Rains, Flocks A Mile Wide, Bird Raptures, A Hundred Thousand Birds, Thus In The Winter, In the End Lin Marsh : Junior Songscape: Earth, Sea and Sky This is a collection of 25 original songs themed on the elements: Earth, Sea and Sky. The original idea was conceived for a cluster of primary schools in Devon who were embarking on a 'Planet Earth' whole school project. As a result the Sea songs are aimed at 5-6 year olds, 7-8 year olds tackle the Earth songs and 9-10 year olds have the Sky songs. Although conceived as a whole school project Earth, Sea and Sky works equally as well as a song book to dip in and out of. The songs are written with a sensitivity for the range and skills of the age group they are designed for and any part writing is optional, allowing even less confident choirs to get involved and get singing. This is a wonderful follow on from Junior Songscape building on Lin Marsh's well established and much loved classroom singing resources. Songlist: Big Boats, Small Boats, Pirates!, Playing On The Beach, The Rock Pool, The Lighthouse, Seagull, We're Going Swimming, Underwater, Desert, The Dinosaur Gang, Mighty Glacier, River Journey, Mountain Air, The Rainforest, The Swamp, There's A Rumbling And A Rolling, I Am The Wind, Aliens, Hot-Air Balloon, Space Travel, Communication, Gravity!, Silver Moon, Stars, Earth, Sea and Sky Mark Brymer : Big Beautiful Planet It's up to me, it's up to you. The inspiration for this fantastic piece came when the then seventeen-year-old composer was fishing with his dad in Colorado. The music draws from the shape-note tradition and features a hearty sound, an imitative fugal section, melodic ornaments, open intervals, and doubling at the octave. It is unusual in that the melody is in the bass part. The text by the composer draws on the hymn-writing style of the great theologians of the shape-note tradition, though it proclaims a more contemporary message of environmental stewardship. It has had an extensive pre-publication life that includes performances on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" and by the Christmas Revels, Village Harmony, and Northern Harmony.
Composer: Seth Houston
