Review: Essential Musicianship, Book 1," recommended for Grades 6-8 or other beginning groups, is a sequential choral method that helps the beginning singer develop a strong foundation of musical skills. In each of the twenty chapters a concept is presented in the theory section, practiced in the sight-reading section, and applied in the performance of a song. Book 1 contains drills, exercises and 37 practice/performance songs for mixed, treble and tenor bass choir.

Basic notation, rhythm, pitch and basic harmony are covered through drills, exercises and 44 practice/performance songs for mixed, treble and tenor bass choirs.

Concepts presented include major/minor scales, diatonic chords, intervals, chromaticism, categories of harmony, modes, simple, asymmetric and changing meters. The 52 practice/performance songs for mixed, treble and tenor bass choirs are designed to improve reading skills through expressive singing.
