The Lithuanian composer has created a beautiful contemporary motet featuring chant-like melodies, a dramatic climax, and a hushed ending.
Composer: Vytautas Miskinis
The low altos are prominently featured both melodically and harmonically in this lush, a cappella setting that is strongly reminiscent of Brahms. In the text by J. Sudrabkalns musical concepts become metaphors for the complexities of life. Barisons's musical treatment enhances the meaning of the text while simultaneously evoking rich, warm tone and expressive delivery.
Arranger: Peteris Barisons
The last thing I expected to find in Estonia was Barbershop-style singing, but that is exactly what "Sulle Mulle" is. The infectious dotted rhythm of the soprano melody is underlaid by an equally infectious rhythmic ostinato in the alto parts. "Sulle Mulle" should be sung with great gusto and highly exaggerated pronunciation for optimal effect. (Also available for TTBB.)
