Louise Toppin : Black Composers in Art Song - Low Voice

Review: Vocal anthologies have been a staple in voice studios for many years, providing teachers and students with a wide array of repertoire at a reasonable cost. Teachers eagerly stocked their studios with these multi-composer volumes as well as those of the more popular single composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Debussy, Fauré, etc. There is a plethora of anthologies devoted to the Arie antiche, German lieder, French mélodie, and American art song. Missing from this landscape was an anthology with multiple composers devoted to the art songs of Black composers. Acknowledging that there have always been some anthologies by Black composers devoted to single composers of art songs, song cycles, and spirituals; there have been relatively few collections that offer singers a variety of songs by different Black composers. This new collection Black Composers in Art Song is designed with the studio teacher in mind. Its appealing repertoire meets technical, linguistic, and interpretive goals to make it easier for teachers to expand the musical canon they teach to include works by Black composers. The composers selected represent the United States, England and France and both male (9) and female (5) composers. The fourteen selected songs span the 18th to 21st centuries and utilize three of the singing languages (English, German, French and French creole). The book includes a thorough introduction along with composer bios. Balthazar Lutgen : Vocalises Vol. 1 for High Voices

Review: The aim of these Vocalises is to render the voice sufficiently flexible and mellow to execute easily and elegantly the coloratura and embellishments found in the works of our great composers. Proceeding from the principle, that it is unpractical to practice a variety of difficult passages at the same time, I begin with two, three, and four tones, then advancing progressively to more difficult exercises; leaving it to the teacher to transpose them a semitone higher or lower. However, in order to avoid the monotony and lassitude which are almost inseparable from a strictly methodic in a musical and agreeable form; and have made them very short, to prevent overexertion of the voice. Following its avowed purpose, this work contains no exercises for sustained tones; and it will suffice to sing daily a few long-sustained tones, before taking up these exercises. The results obtained with this method, and its approbation by several of the highest musical authorities, justify my hope, that it will find a favorable reception.

Review: Contains more than 200 vocal exercises under the following headings: mental readiness, physical readiness, posture alignment, breath management, tone production, vowels, articulation, range and register, intonation and balance/volume relations. This is an excellent resource for all singers of any style and along with the exercises and text are some excellent diagrams and photos that really does cover all the bases to insure getting the most from your voice in an effective and safe manner. Highly recommended.

Review: The Sieber Vocalises: It is important to know why Sieber is so good for the voice. He was a Viennese, Italian-trained voice teacher who knew the importance of vowel alteration and its role in keeping the balance of the registers. The Sieber Vocalises are designed to balance the registers using 8 measure melodies based on the Italian syllables da, me, ni, po, to, la, be. The register balance is achieved in the ingenious way Sieber arranges the syllables. Again, his goal it to allow the space of the open vowels in the closed vowels, and the ring of the closed vowels in the open vowels. Lindquest called these vocalises the 'bridge between vocalizing and singing music'.
