She was born Sarah Trevor Teasdale in St. Louis, Missouri, and used the name Sara Teasdale Filsinger after her marriage in 1914. From 1904 to 1907, Teasdale was a member of The Potters, led by Lillie Rose Ernst, a group of female artists in their late teens and early twenties who published, from 1904 to 1907, The Potter's Wheel, a monthly artistic and literary magazine in St. Louis. Teasdale's first poem was published in William Marion Reedy's Reedy's Mirror, a local newspaper, in 1907. Her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, was published that same year. In 1918 she won a Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 poetry collection Love Songs. It was "made possible by a special grant from The Poetry Society"; however, the sponsoring organization now lists it as the earliest Pulitzer Prize for Poetry . |

Michael John Trotta : For a Breath of Ecstasy This work draws texts from Love Songs, the anthology of celebrated American poet, Sara Teasdale (1884-1933), and was commissioned to celebrate the centennial of her winning the first Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1918. Each of the movements of For a Breath of Ecstasy chronicles Teasdale's search for solace amidst life's many storms. The tapestry of different vocal forces set against the backdrop of Oboe and Strings reveals moments of yearning, love, joy, and peace. Vivid imagery portrays transcendent moments of solace that are revealed in an individual's relationship to nature and in love. Sarah Quartel : A Winter Day This five-movement work celebrates the long Canadian winter, setting texts by the composer, Sara Teasdale, Lucy Maud Montgomery (of 'Anne of Green Gables' fame), and Melville Cane. Each movement depicts a different time of day, beginning with the cold darkness before dawn ('Timid Star') and concluding with the evening turning into dusk and then darkness ('Snow Toward Evening'). The music conjures up vivid images of a cold and crisp winter, and of swirling, dancing snowflakes. Songlist: Timid Star, A Winter Dawn, Into Morning, A Winter Day, Snow Toward Evening |

With a simple melody inspired by children's songs, All That Could Never Be Said is a setting of Sara Teasdale's poem In the End. Showcasing her signature pairing of nihilism and pastoral beauty, the poem is an exploration of regret: it suggests that the consequences of our inaction are final and absolute. There are no second chances to speak up or to act, and all our missed opportunities will be lost to us until we're reunited with them in death.

Although there have been many settings of this inspired text, either under this title or American poet Sara Teasdale's original title, Barter, Carey's setting is the most intently aware of the sad irony of the poem as viewed in the context of Teasdale's eventual death by suicide.
