Nick Page is a Boston based composer, conductor and author who is best known for his song leading. In the 1980's he was a conductor with the Emmy Award winning Chicago Children's Choir. Since 1990, he has led Boston's Mystic Chorale and guest conducted around the word including at three of the four Carnegie Halls (Pittsburgh, New York, and Scotland). His choral works have premiered everywhere from Lincoln Center to humble school cafitoriums. He is the author of three books and has close to one hundred published choral pieces. Nick Page : Sing With Us Whether for classroom sing-alongs, adult community sings, choral concerts, or just riding in the car, this Step One of the SING WITH US songbooks is an invaluable resource. Composer and song leader Nick Page, who has led group sings and workshops at MENC, ACDA, AOSA and other conferences for many years, has assembled this multicultural set of 28 easy and fun sing-along songs for all ages. The collection begins with echo songs that are easy, but with a simple challenge, reinforcing Nick's belief that the first step in getting people of all ages to sing along is to make them better listeners. Along with this, Nick encourages using lots of emotion, particularly joy. The call and response songs and the unison songs that follow offer well known gems as well as easy to learn new songs that can be sung in unison or with harmony. Drawing their inspiration from the Hippocratic Oath, Nick Page and Nita Penfold have crafted a moving reminder of our ability to help and support one another in our daily living.Available separately: SATB and Optional Bass. Performance Time: Approx. 4:50.
There are three sections to the piece. The audience can join in singing the opening groove. When the conductior or leader form the chorus gives the signal, the chorus goes into a second section. Because of the improvisational nature of jazz, the leader can then either return to the first section or go on the third section. During the first section, soloists should come forward to scat or create vocal drum grooves (percussion patterns made with the voice). Invite audience members to come forward to do solos. If you want, change the key of the piece or sing it fast or sing it slow or sing it slow, then fast to create vocal drum grooves to go in the background or, while the vocal drum grooves are wailing away, have the singing suddenly stop, letting the drum patterns shine out by themselves. In America, this popular contemporary Jewish song is often performed slowly and peacefully, but in Israel, it is performed in a quick tempo, as it is in this arrangement. Written in honor of Mandy Miller and her singers in Lochgelly, Scotland, this lovely unison piece serves as a tribute to all children who display joy, warmth and pride when singing. Although an original composition, the rhythms reflect Scottish folk traditions. An excellent selection to teach phrasing, melodic lines, and unison singing. Duration: ca. 2:00.
Bowling Green was recorded in the 1940's by Cousin Emmy. Page's simple arrangement is in a higher key and, in the folk tradition, has changes to the rhythm. Suggested instrumentation for accompaniment for this piece (combination of any of these instruments): banjo, mandolin, guitar, fiddle, dobro, and bass.
Based on a quickly-learned round, this piece is designed to be sung by everyone! Parts for a mixed choir, children's choir and the audience all combine to make a fantastic musical experience for the entire group. Optional bass and percussion add to the fun. Originally written for unison choir with descant and part of Nick's Nursery Rhyme Cantata this new voicing for SSA and piano is lush and worthy of any fine choir. Dedicated to Dr. Barbara Tagg and already performed by one of her choirs at Syracuse, her stamp of approval for this arrangement is high praise indeed. Duration Ca. 3 minutes
Stephen Stills wrote this song after visiting a Civil War battle site and the emotion is still potent today: "All the brave soldiers that cannot get older been asking after you....Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground." The a cappella texture makes it especially moving.

The improvisatory refrain at the end of this arrangement reflects the sense of unrushed exuberance of the style and will be a wonderful introduction to the genre.

Hamisha Asar are the Ladino words (the Spanish Hebrew language spoken by the Sephardic Jews) for Tu Be'Shevat, the Jewish holiday in the spring that celebrates the time when sap begins flowing in the tress. Duration: ca. 2:00.
Inspired by a poem written by Nick Page's father and his father's belief in humanity's capacity for greatness, Nick has crafted a song of love, healing and hope. Although written for 2 parts, this piece would work well with an older, mixed voice choir in unison on the part 2 line and younger voices on the top line. Examining a real event of 1851, Page asks us to look to the future where the past is always present. Do we learn from our past or do we make the same mistakes over and over? Written for the Cincinnati Children's choir, this simple and haunting melody by Nick Page is written using an original, Impressionistic piano accompaniment that will allow young singers many opportunities for expression and freedom. Inspired by the words of great peacemakers like Jesus, Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., Peace Variations sets the word peace in Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, English, and Latin. The piano accompaniment is inspired by Bach's Prelude 1 in C Major.

We're Goin' Around is a selection from ragtime legend Scott Joplin's second opera, Treemonisha, which was never performed in full during the composer's lifetime. Have fun with the syncopated ragtime style and the old folk dialect.
