Keeping singers in our ensembles excited and energized during the warm-up process is a consistent hurdle for educators across the nation. Songs of patriotism and inspiration were always part of Fred Waring's broadcasts and stage shows. By popular request, Songs of Freedom was compiled from recordings in their collection. Selections include John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever," "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor" from Miss Liberty by Irving Berlin and "Battle Hymn Republic," which was made popular by Roy Ringwald's arrangement and won a gold record. Also included is Fred Waring's "love song for America," "My America." Waring wrote the song for his bicentennial shows in 1975.

Founded in 1951, The 160-strong San Diego Chorus is one of the largest and most dynamic chapters of Sweet Adelines International, winning International Gold in Portland in 2001 and in Seattle in 1975, with 3 Silver medals and a Bronze sandwiched in between. "Spirit of Freedom" has received critical acclaim in all the major publications (Fanfare, American Record Guide, etc.) Several of the tracks have been featured on a PBS series called "Freedom: A History of US." In addition, those same tracks have been featured on a soundtrack recording and companion anthology released by SONY records. Gothic's original recording "The Spirit of Freedom" is the best anthology available of patriotic songs and the only complete recording containing all four verses of the Star Spangled Banner.

Formed in 1972, the Minneapolis/St. Paul-based Emporium won the championship after only three years in the running. These two performances were recorded with seven cameras by PBS in Charleston, North Carolina, and also at the World Theater, home of Minnesota's other famous export, the "Prairie Home Companion." Well, on with the show - aside from wonderful barbershop harmony, the four gents couldn't be more endearing, with corny jokes and schtick aplenty. Songs such as "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" and "Hard To Be Humble" - the latter an audience participation event - will have you smiling. "I Never Knew You" is the evening's tender moment. Running time over 60 minutes.
