The Banks O' Doon" is a Scots song written by Robert Burns in 1791, sometimes known as "Ye Banks and Braes" (after the opening line of the third version). Burns set the lyrics to an air called The Caledonian Hunt's Delight. Its melodic schema was also used for Phule Phule Dhole Dhole, a song by Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.
The song was inspired by the story of Margaret (Peggy) Kennedy (1766—95), who was seduced then abandoned by Andrew McDouall, son of a wealthy family and sometime Member of Parliament for Wigtonshire. Kennedy sued for a declarator of marriage, but died prior to adjudication of the case. Although the Consistorial court found the marriage claim valid, the Court of Session decided the marriage claim failed, but found McDouall to be the father of Kennedy's daughter and ordered that he pay £3,000 to Kennedy's estate and provide for the child. (Burns wrote a second poem about Peggy, who he had met when she was 18 - Young Peggy Blooms.

Collegium Regale, which is composed of the choral scholars from the King's College Choir, explores the traditional songs of Britain, America, France and Hungary. Many of these familiar tunes, such as "Molly Malone" and "Shenandoah" were arranged by Keith Roberts who serves as the group's artistic consultant. The spirituals arranged by Robert Rice stray from the traditional style. His versions lean toward the lighter sounds of doo-wop and barbershop, particularly in "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child." Though, all pieces and especially the solos are sung beautifully. Songlist: Dashing Away With The Smoothing Iron, Brigg Fair, Botany Bay, Il est ne le divin enfant, Myfanwy, The turtle dove, Londonderry air, Sometimes I feel like a motherless child, Nobody knows the trouble I seen, De gospel train, My sweetheart's like Venus, Ca' the yowes, Molly Malone, O Waly Waly, Ye banks and braes, Song of the Volga Boatmen, Shenandoah, Joshua, Steal Away, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot Polyphony : At Twilight The pairing of music by Percy Grainger and Edvard Grieg at first may seem odd. In fact, though, the two composers were good friends. Grieg lauded Grainger's folk song settings as helping to create "an independent English music." The choral music of Grainger and Grieg on this CD, sung gloriously by Polyphony, was written in the early 1900's. Most of Grainger's settings are of English folk songs, though there are a few Irish and Scotch ones as well. The CD also includes a song from Grainger's native Australia (Track 18 Australian Up-Country Song). The Four Psalms by Grieg are his last completed works and are based on Norwegian church melodies. To further connect the composers, the English translations of the psalms were written by Grainger. This wonderful recording also features soloists tenor Paul Agnew and baritone David Wilson-Johnson. Songlist: Percy Grainger:, Irish Tune from County Derry, Dollar and a Half a Day, Shenandoah, Stormy, The Gypsy's Wedding Day, Brigg Fair, Mo nighean dubh, O Mistress Mine, Edvard Grieg, Four Psalms, How Fair is Thy face, God's Son hath set me free, Jesus Christ our Lord is risen, In heav'n above, Ave, Maris Stella, Percy Grainger, Soldier, soldier, Mary Thomson, Ye banks and braes, Dalvisa, Australian Up-Country Song, Near Woodstock Town, The Sussex Mummers' Carol, A Song of Varmeland, At Twilight St. Louis Children's Choir : 30th Anniversary Artistic Director Barbara Berner leads the various permutations of the 500 strong St. Louis Children's Choirs in this accompanied, 2-disc collection of 38 songs, which features eight new works commissioned to celebrate the Choirs' 30th anniversary. These include the Concert Choir, Children's Choir, Music Makers, Chorale, Chamber Singers, Young Men's Ensemble and Alumni of these smaller choirs. These commissioned works are among our favorites: Imant Raminsh's "The Path That Leads to Nowhere," Lee Kesselman's "Rad Halaila," "Dream Angus," arranged by Mandy Miller, Rollo Dilworth's "A Symphony of the Heart," David Brunner's "Psalm of Praise," David Gawthrop's "Repose," Bob Chilcott's "Red Boots On," and Andrea Ramsey's "Cover Me With The Night." Each of these choirs has its own personality and sound, and the well-chosen songlist is a joy from beginning to end. Meet us in St. Louis for this beautifully recorded, feel-good collection! Arranger: John Leavitt | Country: Scotland
This thoughtful setting of a traditional Scottish melody features text by Robert Burns, a harp-like piano accompaniment, and a lilting flute obbligato giving it a Celtic feel. Like so many folk songs of this region, the melody is beautifully singable and richly rewarding. Also available for Three-Part Mixed Voices (CM8734) and SA Voices (CM8735).
Arranger: Russell Robinson | Poetry By: Robert Burns | Country: Scotland
Scottish harmonic openness is evident throughout this arrangement of Ye Banks and Braes. The optional tenor notes let the SAB voicing become a 3-part mixed voicing for younger voices. How wonderful if your voicing needs change within the year or from year to year. The piano accompaniment is easy, but strong and supportive.
