African-American spirituals comprise one of the world's greatest and best-loved bodies of music, appealing to both performers and audiences across all boundries. This book is the first anthology to present a comprehensive survey of the genre's reperoire - its principal composers, themes and forums - in a way this is at once stylistally authentic, historically meaningful and intended for practical use both in worship and in concert. The spirituals in this collection have become mainstays in the body of American male chorus literature. There are almost a hundred years between the dates of birth of Charles Ives, 1874, and Eric Whitacre, born 1970, the youngest composer in this Kaleidoscope of American choral music. If someone takes a look at the standard works in music literature, there is hardly any American choral music to be found. The American works that can be perceived as approaching the traditions of western music do not appear to interest the specialist world in Europe. The story in concert halls and churches, as well as in recording studios, is quite different, however. Through the founding of many choirs, gospels and spirituals are more popular than ever and, on the programs of classical a cappella choirs, the works of Morten Lauridsen or Samuel Barber have already become classics. The Amadeus Choir is an ensemble of some 50 singers and was founded by Karl-Friedrich Beringer, conductor of the Windsbacher Knabenchor since 1978.

Director McCorvey has assembled a stellar group of 22 mixed voices, all soloists in their own right, to create his all-star touring ensemble. Favorites among these 15 live cuts, recorded on the group's 1998-2000 tours of Kentucky and Spain, include the live cut "Walk Together Children," the most dynamic arrangement of "The Battle of Jericho" we have heard, "Rock-A-My Soul," "Free At Last (From Big River)," "Amen," "Lord, How Come Me Here," "I Don't Feel No Ways Tired," "You Can Tell The World" and "Come Sunday." This recording continues the intent of the Singers' two earlier CDs, "We Sing of Christ" and "Songs of the Soul," adding another dimension in expressions of love and faith for Jesus Christ in their interpretations of African-American spirituals. There are 21 classic Spirituals here, the title tune, "Were You There" (sung in concert with the BYU Concert Choir and Men's Chorus), Adolphus Hailstork's "Crucifixion," "By and By," "Ain't Got Time to Die," "See What the End Is Gonna Be" (an original by founder/conductor/arranger Ronald Staheli), Moses Hogan's "I Got a Home in-a dat Rock" "Elijah Rock," Didn't My Lord Daniel Deliver" and "The Battle of Jericho," "Shut de Do'," "Let Me Fly" and "Ain't that News." But there's not a weak cut on this recording- "I Believe" is upbeat, joyous stuff, one of our favorite recordings by a great chorus!

Exuberant singing comes from the Chicago Children's Choir on songs of the human spirit. This live recording features Faure's Requiem and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms with piano accompaniment by Russell Stern. A cappella songs include a very spirited arrangement by Moses Hogan of The Battle of Jericho, Sizohamba, a South African Xhosa song and Svadba, a Bulgarian Wedding song featuring the treble voices. The tenors and basses are featured on the John Coates Jr. arrangement of He Ain't Heavy...He's My Brother. The program closes with Gods Love Nubia from the musical "Aida."

Chicago Children's Choir honors their roots in the Civil Rights Movement with a new recording, Songs on the Road to Freedom. Much of the music comes directly from the movement while other songs are written recently, including "We Need A Word" composed by a 16-year-old member of Chicago Children's Choir. Also featured is the anti-apartheid music of South Africa, where people similarly struggled for freedom and justice.

Iowa State's most select choral ensemble, the undergraduate Iowa State Singers chooses its membership from about 400 active choristers on campus. Ably directed by Dr. James Rodde, the choir annually presents a 5-concert season, with a repertoire emphasizing the a cappella tradition. "Choral Spectrum I" is a generous collection of 20 songs, from the choir's repertoire from 2001 to 2004, many of them with classical Christian themes, such as Jan P. Sweelinck's "Pseaume 43, Chris Nielsen's Benedictus Dominus, John Tavener's "The Lamb," Emile Desamours' "Alelouya,"Anthony Bruckner's "Locus Iste," Zdenek Lukas' "Magna Est Vis Veritatis," Heinrich Schutz' "Cantate Domino," Josef Swider's "Cantus Gloriosus" and others. Also wonderful are the Moses Hogan-arranged spirituals "Hold On!," "My Soul's Been Anchored" and "The Battle of Jericho," the Alice Parker-arranged "He's the Lily of the Valley," Rene Clausen's "Quicksand Years," Eric Whitacre's "Sleep" and David Dichau's "If Music Be the Food of Love." This is stunningly beautiful material, with perfect leads that soar above the rich harmonies, touching and moving us. Exquisite!

Denver-based 36 mixed-voice semiprofessional choir Kantorei has grown from a group of six friends singing carols in 1997 to a respected group that has appeared at Carnegie Hall for the National ACDA Conference, and been conducted by Rene Clausen in a premiere performance of his work. Esteemed director Richard Larson has been a major factor in the group's rise. "Home" is the group's fifth very good CD, and is a collection of 21 folk songs and spirituals. Picking favorites is not easy, there are excellent solos on "Let Me Fly ," "Dere's No Hidin' Place," "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel " and "City Called Heaven." Folk tunes "Black is the Color," "Danny Boy," and "Wearing of the Green " are wonderful. And we can't forget the four tunes arranged by the late Moses Hogan, "The Battle of Jericho" "You Better Min' How You Talk ," "I Can Tell the World" and "My Soul's Been Anchored." Another winner for Kantorei! Recommended.

The elite Troubadors of Oakland's Pacific Boychoir Academy are joined by Continuum, a group of former boy choristers whose voices have changed, and soloist Jonathon Hampton, to sing this strong collection of 19 African-American spirituals, directed by Kevin Fox. Favorites are "Ain't Got Time to Die," "City Called Heaven," "Precious Lord" and "Wade in the Water," all of which features Hampton's smooth countertenor; "Over Yonder," which features soloist Jacob Wilson; "Deep River," "The Battle of Jericho" and "Hear My Prayer." There is some light accompaniment. The soloists contrast nicely with the Troubadors' sweet, high background vocals, particularly Hampton's rich leads. A special, beautifully performed collection!
