The second CD from this Chicago foursome (plus guest percussionist), who like rock and still admit to it. In fact, they even perform rock songs on this CD! Yes, INXS, Grand Funk Railroad and Cheap Trick fall victim to the AC (pronounced "Aack") Rock onslaught. Even "Vehicle," a seventies rock anthem written by Jim Peterik (of cult favorites "Ides of March" and later of eighties AOR band Survivor), receives the AC treatment, complete with an actual guitar solo played by Jim himself! What's more, AC Rock are fine singers, they're tight, and they're in tune. Eight man Polish a cappella ensemble Audiofeels recently gave us a memorable taste of what they call "Vocal Play" at the Harmony Sweeps Finals in San Rafael, CA. Vocal Play uses the human voice as a source of multiple instruments to create a vocal orchestra on stage, and this unique, creative concept has taken them from the Adam Mickiewicz University Choir in Poznan, Poland, where they met to Poland's prestigious Grand Theatre, to the NYC Sweeps Regionals, to the Finals, where they got a big ovation, and where to next? Flying Pickets : Next Generation   

First formed in England in 1982 by members of a socialist fringe theatre group who used a cappella singing in a play about a miner's strike, the Pickets fell in love with the music. They started doing pop/rock a cappella in UK clubs, released a live CD on their own label, which sold so well they were signed by Virgin Records in 1983. The first single with Virgin, "Only You," a cover of a song by Yazoo, was number 1 in the UK and huge in Europe. Four more excellent Contemporary CDs followed. "Live" was recorded at the Fliegende Bauten in Hamburg in 2002, and it shows off the group's forte: dynamic live performances, reminiscent of the Nylons. 14 songs, "I Want It That Way," "Let Me Entertain You," Stephen Stills' "Love The One You're With," Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," a FP original, "Guilty," "When," Seal's "Kiss From a Rose," Sting's "Moon Over Bourbon Street," Stevie Wonder's "As," "Living La Vida Loca," "Eternal Flame," Kool & the Gang's "Celebration," "Mama Lou" and "Only You." With the subtitle of "close-harmony arrangements of timeless songs from famous movies," "Circle Of Life" contains orchestrated versions of well-known themes, such as "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Everything I Do, I Do For You" and "I Will Always Love You." Recorded in Holland in 1996 (with the exception of "Kokomo," the Beach Boys song that appeared on "Spirit Voices"), and therefore available only on import, some of the arrangements are innocuous, while others, such as "Live And Let Die" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" are merely unlikely. An a cappella version of "The Rose," from the film of the same name, is the CD's winner by a landslide.

The three men and three women of Danish Contemporary sextet Singers have been singing together for 10 years now, and the voices and harmonies are sweet, clear and sure. We were hoping their website would offer clues to how they can juxtapose an energetic Christian tune like "Shackles (Praise You)" with the hip-hop song "No Diggety," but the website is all in Danish. So we can just sit back and enjoy their cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," the r&b classic "I Got A Man" (originally titled "I Got A Woman,") Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror" and "He's (originally She's) Out of My Life," a waltz-like "Kiss From A Rose," "Freedom '90" and "Jesus Christ Lies Here Tonight" without explanation. All songs are sung beautifully, and in perfect English. "Breathing" is a treat!

The University of Northern Colorado is one of the most well respected educational centers for vocal jazz studies thanks to the efforts of Gene Aitken, the director of the program since 1976. You will not believe that these are all "students" for their singing is so good and the arrangements so sophisticated it doesn't seem possible, even though it is true. The bulk of the album, 14 of the 17 tracks, is sung by Et Cetera a mixed sextet. Though jazz predominates with such selections as "For The One I Love" and "As Rain" by Anders Edenroth of the Real Group or "One More Time Chuck Corea" by Gene Puerling, there is a strong rock 'n roll presence. The final three tunes were recorded live by a larger jazz chorus, Vocal Jazz I. Discover this one! It's a sleeper.

This year's Harmony Sweepstakes reminded all who participated, how magical making music can be. Now, we all can share that magic by listening to this excellent live recording. With 20 years gone by, this national competition is still going strong and bringing out the very best in a cappella singing. This year's show had an excellent assortment of various styles, including jazz, pop, contemporary, Latin and much more. There were lots of humorous moments, including the national champions, Chapter Six's original song, 7th Wheel, as well as somber/uplifting moments including the beautiful performance of Kiss From A Rose by Impulse. Of course no one could forget Clockwork's performance of Inna-Godda-Da-Vida or Vox Bop's Commercial medley. With continuous stellar performances from all eight groups, this 19 track CD is sure to keep you entertained.
