Michael Neaum's arrangements number over 150. His work is lauded by choirs for being singable. He brings out the color and flavor found with in the conventional harmonic idiom and adds unexpected nuances. In addition to arranging, he is the accompanist for Cantamus. On this recording the world renowned girls' chorus sings Neaum's accompanied and a cappella arrangements of folk songs, spirituals, madrigals, Victorian songs and popular ballads from the twentieth century. Founded in 1903, the OSU Women's Glee Club is one of the oldest and most respected women's Collegiate groups in America. These 19 songs start off nicely with a pair of a cappella tunes, the lovely "Alleluia" by William Boyce, and Jacques Arcadelt's joyous "Sing On this Festive Day," Bach's lightly accompanied "Dominus Deus," and three by Gwyneth Walker, "Mornings Innocent,"" "Love is a Rain of Diamonds" and "I will be earth." Thomas Morely's "Fire, fire my heart" and a pair of spirituals by Michael Neaum, "I got a robe" and "Didn't it rain" are also on our list of favorites. The Glee Club has a pure, harmonic soprano sound that's easy on the ears, and every cut on "Here's to Song" is a winner!

'Feel the Spirit' is a set of seven arrangements of well-known spirituals, first performed in 2001. It is performed on this recording by the acclaimed jazz singer Jacqueline Dankworth in its chamber-ensemble arrangement. Harvey Brough's 'Walled Garden Suite' for soloist, choir and instrumental quartet was written for Dankworth and first performed on the occasion of the opening of the walled garden at Wingfield Arts in Suffolk. Of the two collections by Bob Chilcott on this CD, 'Fragments from his Dish' is a group of five light-hearted part-songs on the themes of food and drink. The programme concludes with 'The Making of the Drum', settings of words by Barbadian poet Edward Kamau Braithwaite, commissioned from Bob Chilcott by OPMS on the occasion of the choir's twentieth anniversary in 1997. It tells the story of the making of a traditional African drum and is heavily influenced by the style of African tribal music.

Oakwood College Church of Huntsville, AL's 16-strong Singing Men, who have been performing their ministry of song to thousands of folks in need since forming in 1977, bring us another wonderful collection of 10 songs. "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus," "Saviour Like A Shepherd," the rousing Spiritual "Animals," "Oh Let Me Fly," the title tune, "Old Rugged Cross," "Jacob's Ladder," "Rock-A My Soul" and "Precious Lord" are a few favorites, but each of these heartfelt, richly harmonic tunes is a treat that touches, heals and inspires. "One Day" is a musical gift, as is the ongoing ministry of the amazing Singing Men!
