The Janes take a collection of songs that Thirty-Something Girls Like-"I Can't Make You Love Me," "Woodstock" and "Like A Prayer" are just several, but they're all good-begin with carefully constructed arrangements and pour their seven voices in a thick layer over the top. Sometimes "all-girl" groups can lack ballast on the bottom end, but Calamity Jane-as their name implies-gets the job done, relying on a foundation of dense block chords and ground bass figures. These gals aren't striving for a delicate, girly sound, but demonstrate that they can more than hold their own in the male-dominated world of contemporary a cappella.

Fretless : All The Things We Are   

Fretless chose its name to represent the freedom, and challenge, of making music with a fretless instrument, the human voice. These five (3 men, 2 women) multitalented singers sharpened their chops performing with many other jazz and classical groups, particularly those performing in the Boston area; they began singing together in 1999. "All the Things" is a finely-crafted, varied collection of 18 covers ranging from the classical and sacred (Palestrina's "Exultate Deo," Debussy's "Dieu! Ou'il La Fait Bon Regarder!," Durufle's "Ubi Caritas" and "Brahms' Lullaby") and rock (Loggins & Messina's "Your Mama Don't Dance" and the LaBelle hit "Lady Marmalade," to pop and R&B ("James Taylor's "Lonesome Road," Randy Newman's "Short People" and Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears") reggae (Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross") show tunes (Hammerstein's "All the Things You Are" and Gene Krupa's "Some Like It Hot", arranged by Mel Torme) and jazzy blues (the Lambert/Hendricks/Ross arranged "Moanin'"). We particularly enjoyed soprano Anna Choi's solos on "I Can't Make You Love Me," "Tracks of My Tears," "Many Rivers to Cross" and "Lady Marmalade." An impressive, very entertaining debut CD from talented Fretless!

In the 25 years it has been in existence, the University of North Carolina's Clef Hangers have constantly redefined themselves. The twenty men of the 2001-03 group share the goal of having a blast while they do what they love: singing. "Breeze" takes advantage of, even pushes the envelope of, advances in a cappella recording. Thirteen well-chosen covers, with "real-sounding" percussion, very full sound, solid backup vocals, excellent leads. Some favorites" Bush's "Comedown," The Commodores' "Easy," Weezer's "Say It Ain't So," Elton John's "Your Song," Rascal Flatts' "This Everyday Love," Dave Matthews' "Grey Street," PM Dawn's "Die Without You" and Toto's "Africa." This highly-popular series has become a yearly event to satisfy the appetites of collegiate music lovers, and it's a great way to expose oneself to the up-and-coming talent proliferating at our nation's higher institutions. Whether the Stanford Counterpoints "Don't Speak," the Tufts Amalgamates "I Don't Want to Wait" or "Don't Stand So Close To Me" by UPenn Off The Beat, the selections offer a tuneful portion of what's hip now in current or retro pop, and the quality is entirely professional. Over half the tracks were CARA nominated, a surefire harbinger of success. Many members of professional and semi-professional contemporary vocal bands started out in these very ensembles, so heads up!

Nancy Wilson, a beautiful woman who is also an actress of note, has been seen in performance many times. However, this 1993 evening of singing at the famed Blues Alley in Washington D.C. was originally intended for A&E's "Biography" but was never released. It is a definitive evening of Nancy's, during which she performs many of her well known songs including her Grammy Award winning "How Glad I Am, "I Have Never Been To Me," and the classic "Guess Who I Saw Today?" This concert presents Nancy Wilson at her memorable best. Nancy has never allowed herself to be classified as just a jazz singer. She has worked hard to offer her audience a wide spectrum of songs that include both jazz and the best of American popular music. She has successfully recorded over 40 albums and CDs for both the Capitol and Columbia labels. In 1991 she recorded a very successful CD "With My Lover Beside Me" with Barry Manilow, who wrote music to unpublished lyrics of Johnny Mercer, for her to record, exclusively.
