The spiritual describes events in the Old Testament of the Bible, specifically Exodus 8:1: "And the LORD spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me", in which God commands Moses to demand the release of the Israelites from bondage in Egypt.
The lyrics of the song represent liberation of the ancient Jewish people from Egyptian slavery. In one interpretation of the song, "Israel" represents enslaved African Americans, while "Egypt" and "Pharaoh" represent the slavemaster.[1] Going "down" to Egypt is derived from the Bible; the Old Testament recognizes the Nile Valley as lower than Jerusalem and the Promised Land; thus, going to Egypt means going "down"[2] while going away from Egypt is "up".[3] In the context of American slavery, this ancient sense of "down" converged with the concept of "down the river" (the Mississippi), where slaves' conditions were notoriously worse, a situation which lead to the idiom "sell [someone] down the river" in present-day English.

Alexander L'Estrange : The Gospel Train Gospel music is a vibrant fusion of African folk music and European hymns. Rooted in the spiritual (the creation of African-Americans in the 19th century), the joy of gospel music has had a profound influence on 20th century 'pop' music. The Gospel Train is a medley of three best-loved gospel songs that would be perfect as a concert opener or encore. The laid-back swing of 'Go Down, Moses' is contrasted by 'Oh Happy Day!' (used in the Whoopi Goldberg film Sister Act) and concludes with the unstoppable finale 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. The spiritual 'Standing in the Need of Prayer' is a simple meditative melody with a pleasing, repetitive chord sequence. The beautiful, extensive liner notes booklet contains a history of the group from their founding in 1987, and many photographs of the almost 200 children involved in four choirs. There are 21 songs by different groups and configurations of the choir, such as "Like as a Father" by the Massed Choirs, the spirituals "Ain't That News" and "Go Down Moses" by Choir III, "Behold the Beauty of the Lord" by the Bach Chamber Youth Choir, "My Shadow" by Choir I, "When the Tide Goes Out" and "Down By The Riverside" by Massed Choirs with Guest Dads. There's some magical material we're hearing for the first time, "The Piper and the Chiming Pea," "I'm A Train," "Raking Song," "The Bold Hunter" and others. Some light accompaniment. "Look to this Day" is a very enjoyable and upbeat collection. Songlist: To Music, Antiphonal Alleluia, Like As A Father, Akakomborerwa, Children Blessed Of The Lord, Ain't That News, And God Shall Wipe Away All The Tears, Kneel Always', Ma Navu, Go Down Moses, Praise The Lord, God's Glories Show, Set Me As A Seal, Behold The Beauty Of The Lord, Seeds Grow To Plants, The Piper And The Chiming Pea, I Want Two Wings, My Shadow, Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet, The Bold Hunter, A Jubilant Song, Vagabond Song, O Lord Of Life, Ching-a-Ring Chaw, Pecos Bill, Tutira Mai Nga Iwi, Have You Seen A Rainbow, P'tit Galop Colinda, When The Tide Goes Out, Ngana And So It Goes, Skye Boat Song, and more BBC Singers : Choral Images - Sir Michael Tippett When Sir Michael Tippett first worked with the BBC Singers in 1944, the experience was such that he recalled nearly 50 years later that "It was to be the first of many such occasions when a composer's dreams were brought to fulfillment." Tippett's relationship with the BBC Singers went back to almost the beginning of his career, and he often expressed intense admiration for them. His faith is rewarded here. Now under the Conductor Laureate, Stephen Cleobury, the present-day BBC Singers return the compliment with this program of his works for choir, both unaccompanied and with organ. The plaintive high solo of the Nunc Dimittis, floating above strange middle-range harmonies, soars worlds away from cosy Anglican convention. The 'sprung' rhythms of Dance Clarion Air and The Windhover have a muscular freedom unlike anything in contemporary English music. The strangely irregular figures Tipett waves around the tune in Over the Sea to Skye may seem over-ingenious at first, but by the end their quite hypnotic, at the same time challenging the ear to re-examine a very familiar melody. Songlist: Dance, Clarion Air, Plebs Angelica, Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis, Unto The Hills, England: Early One Morning, Ireland: Lilliburlero, Scotland: Poortith Cauld, Wales: Gwenlian, Skye Boat Song, The Source, The Windhover, Lullaby, Steal Away, Nobody Knows, Go Down Moses, By and by, Deep River Boys Choir Of Harlem : Precious Lord....Take My Hand Harlem's finest, and one of America's finest boys' choirs, brings us a powerful collection of 14 authentic spirituals. The arrangements are by some of the best in the world. "Everytime I Feel the Spirit," "Go Down Moses," "Little David Play On Your Harp," "Ride On King Jesus" and "I Can Tell the World," all arranged by Moses Hogan, "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," arranged by William Dawson, "If I Got My Ticket, Can I Ride," arranged by Robert Shaw, and a pair arranged by Howard Roberts, "Kumbaya My Lord" and "Oh Freedom," are a few of many favorites. Some light piano accompaniment, like on the lovely Don Sebesky-arranged "Amazing Grace," but mostly sweet, spirited a cappella. "Precious Lord" is inspirational and moving on many levels, given the accomplishments of Executive Producer J. Walter Turnbull and many others, molding and teaching the talented children of Harlem. Songlist: Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Go Down Moses, Children, Go Where I send Thee, Little David, Play On Your Harp, Ride On, King Jesus, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, I've Been Buked, If I Got My Ticket, Can I Ride, Mary Was the Queen of Galilee, Amazing Grace, I Can Tell The World, Precious World, Kumbaya My Lord, Oh Freedom Chicago A Cappella : Bound For Glory New settings of African-American Spirituals! Some of our favorites of these 20 songs were commissioned by MUSE, Holly Near's "Foolish Notion" and "I Ain't Afraid" (with the spot-on refrain about religious fundamentalism, "I ain't afraid of your praying, I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your god"), Therese Edell's "Emma," and Sweet Honey in the Rock's Beatrice Johnson Reagon's "Greed" (from "Anybody Here"). The Voiceworks books (complete with CDs) are packed with songs and ideas which are practical, motivating, and accessible. Voiceworks 2 is a complete guide and support for anyone who encourages or teaches other people to sing well. Singing is learned behaviour, and Voiceworks 2 aims to help singers of all ages and experience improve their capability, to develop some techniques, and get pleasure from using their voices. It is claimed that the better people feel about their voices, the better they feel about themselves, so this book is more influential than just a singing book. The music is eclectic, chosen for its accessibility, and can be used progressively as laid out in the book to build confidence and develop vocal technique, or as a 'dip in' resource to suit particular needs. Songlist: Section I: Warm Ups And Rounds, Boom Chicka Boom, Eighteen Hammers Standin', Everywhere We Go, Chicka Hanka, Sarana, Sonagwaza, Banuwa, Banaha, Janie Mama, Freedom Train, Sto Me, Yenamanoa, Oliver Cromwell, The Hand Jive, Three Way Canon Blues, Jazz Gloria, Hashivenu, Alleluia, Cantate Domino, There Was a Young Woman of Ryde, She Died, She Did!, There's a Girl that I Love, Section II: Improvising and Inventing, Section III: Spirituals and Gospel Songs, Zion me wan' go Home, Trampin', Go Down Moses, I Want to be Ready, Shoeshone Love Song, and more ReGeneration : Hymns In Velvet Velvet: a rich fabric. The harmonies of Regeneration: sumptuous, angelic outpourings of rejoicing, of which velvet is a most fitting adjective. Carrying on in the mode established by the best-selling "Christmas In Velvet" volumes one and two, the fourteen traditionals and hymns contained here (ten of which were released a few years ago in a now out-of-print recording entitled"Pure Silk"), are inspiring not only because of their thematic content of praise, but because of the arranging of Derric Johnson, the group's director. To study a Derric Johnson arrangement is to contemplate the canon of a master. Key to his style is his seamless blending of classical choral and jazz idioms that are fresh, yet easy to assimilate. What could be more uplifting than the gloriously ascending intervals of "More Than Wonderful," ending in an epic high note? The serene and resonant "Holy Ground" is set against a backdrop of plush oohs and aahs. The countermelodic texture of "Just As I Am" is engaging but never excessive. The men and women of Regeneration (some of whom moonlight as Walt Disney World's "Voices of Liberty"), could not be more pristine in their performance. Their control, phrasing and interpretation is textbook perfect. All in all, "Hymns in Velvet" is an exercise of pure enjoyment. Songlist: Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Jesus, Lover of my Soul, Just a Little Talk With Jesus, Spirit of God, I Must Tell Jesus, A Mighty Fortress, I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked, O Love That Will Not Let Me Go, Just As I Am, It Is Well With My Soul, Go Down Moses, Holy Ground, Jesus Is His Name, More Than Wonderful Schola Cantorum of Oxford : Children of Our Time In 1978 Schola Cantorum of Oxford-the university's acclaimed chamber choir-recorded Tippett's Five Negro Spirituals from A child of our time. Sir Michael wrote, in his sleeve note accompanying the LP release on L'Oiseau Lyre (DSLO 25, re-issued on CD Belart 461 628-2, no longer available): 'I had never heard the complete set till the recording sessions. I then realised that the sound of these songs when sung thus is quite different from their original settings in the oratorio. They became, as it were, the huge voice of a crowd of folk singing together. It should be clear from the above account of all the variety of pieces on this (all-Tippett) disc how remarkable and resilient a group of young singers the Schola Cantorum of Oxford is, under their equally young, gifted conductor Nicholas Cleobury.' Some twenty years later, under Jeremy Summerly, the choir was asked to make a new recording of the Spirituals to mark the ninetieth birthday of the composer, by then the group's long-standing Patron. This new disc-never previously released-is the result of those sessions, where the Tippett works are complemented by recordings of the winning entries in an international composition competition organized by the choir and other works written for it around the same time. And what an astonishing display of choral pyrotechnics this produced. From the seductive intricacies of Mark Edgley Smith's E E Cummings settings, through the blues-infused harmonies of Antony Pitts's polychoral Thou knowest my lying down, to the extended genius of Francis Pott's Amore langueo (containing what Summerly describes as 'one of the great moments in English choral music from any period'), this new disc offers fascinating discoveries to the choral aficionado and seventy minutes of the very finest choral experience to all. All works, apart from the Tippett and Pitts, are first recordings. Songlist: Thou Knowest My Lying Down, Steal Away, Ave Verum Corpus, Nobody Knows, Echo, Song, Mirage, Go Down Moses, Now I Lay (With Everywhere Around), Spring! May, Love Is More Thicker Than Forge, O By The By, What A Proud Dreamhorse, By And By, Eres, Deep River, Amore Langueo Toronto Children's Chorus : Song of the Lights The repertoire of the Toronto Children's Chorus ranges from sacred music of the Renaissance to contemporary works from many cultures. In addition they have maintained a 20-year tradition of presenting the treble works of Canada's finest composers to the world. "Songs of the Lights" is live recordings from the Chorus' 1999 tour of Australia and New Zealand, and features songs from folk, jazz and popular music genres. Most songs are piano accompanied by Ruth W. Henderson. There are 20 cuts here, our favorites being the 4 tunes from Imant Raminsh's "Songs of the Lights," "African Celebration," the six songs from Patriquin's "World Suite One," accompanist Henderson's "Don't Ever Squeeze A Weasel," "George Gershwin Medley," and Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere." A strong and dramatic treatment of the traditional spiritual, this setting features straightforward vocal lines above the powerful piano accompaniment, which are characterized by rhythmic syncopation and recurring dissonances to add drive and intensity to the overall performance. Duration: ca. 3:00.
Arranger: William C. Powell
A unique arrangement of this well known spiritual. The piano and shakers play a big role in setting the stage; a clever choral piece, not overly difficult, and very effective.
Composer: Paul Carey

Kirby Shaw puts his contemporary stamp on this traditional spiritual for SSA voices. The haunting and powerful story is sung above a driving accompaniment of piano, electric bass and djembe. Full three-part harmony fills the piece, moving back and forth from longer notes to more rhythmic phrases with an optional descant, too. All creating a dynamic sound that treble choirs will love to learn and perform.
Arranger: Kirby Shaw
This is an excellent arrangement of the traditional spiritual; very jazzy and upbeat!
