He joined forces with some of the most talented composers of his day, including Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, and Henry Mancini, to fashion one of the most startlingly original catalogs in American popular music. The Gold went to St. Charles, Missouri's dynamic Ambassadors of Harmony, who sing Rogers and Hammerstein's "I Have Dreamed" and Frank Loesser's "New Ashmolean Marching Society and Student's Conservatory Band," which must be heard to be believed. 2nd Place went to The Northern Lights, with "Make Them Hear You," 3rd to New Tradition Chorus, who recall the minstrel shows with Stephen Foster's "Medley: Camptown Races/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals," 4th to Alexandria Harmonizers" with Gershwin's bluesy "Summertime," and 5th to The Alliance, who give us "The Sunshine of Your Smile." A powerful, amazing collection! Songlist: I Have Dreamed, Make Them Hear You, medley: Comptown Raves/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals, Summertime, The Sunshine Of Your Smile, When It's Night Time To Dixieland, My Foolish Heart, Medley: I Used To Love You/There'll Be Some Changes Made/Five Foot Two, Eyes, Of Blue/Yes Sir, That's My Baby, So Long, mother, Blues In The Night, You'll Never Know, Medley: how Do I Get Outta This Chicken Outfit/Charleston/Stormy Weather, Auld Lang Syne, Button up Your Overcoat, How Deep Is The Ocean, Medley: Everybody Step/Alexander's Ragtime Band, Girls Medley: Margie/No No Nora/Ma Blushin' Rosie, Medley: Get Out And Get Under The Moon/Shine on Harvest Moon, Nice Work If You Can Get It, On The Sunny Side of the Street, If We Can't Be The Same Old Sweethearts, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby Buzz : Buzzapalooza As quite possibly the most highly regarded Sweet Adeline quartet performing today we had high expectations for this new release and are pleased to report that the CD perhaps even surpasses those hopes. This is a very talented quartet of singers who has chosen a most eclectic and interesting repertoire for this recording. They are also singing the arrangements of a veritable who's who of the great barbershop arrangers including Latzko, Wright, Briner, Waeche, Clancy and Rene Craig. Barbershop gurus Joe Connelly and Tony DeRosa also helped with the recording adding further to the feel of barbershop royalty and to the impeccable sound of the CD. This Buzzapalooza has plenty of razzmatazz and is highly recommended to all fans of barbershop singing. Songlist: Give Me The Simple Life, How Deep Is The Ocean, Back In Business, Blues In The Night, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Until The Real Thing Comes Along, Because Of You, He Broke My Heart In Three PlaceJim Clancy, Sweet Hour Of PrayerDavid Wright, Midnight Serenade, Lucky To Be Me, Here And Now Chanticleer : Love Story The story of love is inexhaustible. Let us into your heart to share the enchanting and disturbing emotion which has evoked more poetry and music than any other. Music by Whitacre, Paulus, Tavener, de Vivanco, Victoria, Ellington and more. This CD is a live concert recording of Chanticleer's 2011/12 Season opening concert, Love Story. It was recorded in front of a live audience on September 16 & 21 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Songlist: Veni dilecte mi, Sicut lilium inter spinas, Tant que vivray, Ubi caritas, Epithalame, Vor den Turen, Traumlicht, Frohlich im Maien, Village Wedding, A Rich Brocade, Late Spring, All Night, Illusions, Blues in the Night, Creole Love Call, Make Someone Happy, Somebody to Love, My Romance Chanticleer : Portrait In celebration of its 25th anniversary as "an orchestra of voices," the 12 talented men who are San Francisco-based Chanticleer bring us this marvelous retrospective sampling from its rich discography of recordings. In 1978, Louis Botto, a graduate student in medieval and Renaissance music, wanted to hear the music he was studying performed live (a rarity at the time), and gathered a group of singers from the SF Symphony Chorus and Grace Cathedral Choir. They chose the name "Chanticleer" from the clear-singing rooster from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." The early years were difficult, but the group's reputation grew enough by 1991 to make all 12 members full-time employees. There are 19 gems from some of the many Chanticleer CDs that grace our catalog, and it's hard to pick favorites. Those who favor their flawless singing accompanied, we would recommend Ignacio de Jerusalem's "Hymn: Quem Terra Pontus Sidera," "Recessional: Angelicas Milicias" by Manuel de Sumaya, and Mercer & Arlen's "Blues in the Night." For a cappella, we like the Gregorian chant "Ave Maria," Tomas Luis de Victoria's "Alma Redemptoris Mater," Bernard Rands' "This Heart That Flutters Near My Heart," Chen Yi's "Wild Grass," Stephen Foster's "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" (arr. by Gene Puerling), Michael McGlynn's "Dulaman," "Spanish Carol," "Wade in the Water"--frankly, we could list them all! A well-chosen "best of" of one of our favorite choral groups. Highly recommended! Songlist: Hymn: Quem Tera Pontus Sidera, Ave Maria, Alma Redemptoris Mater, The Angel Cried Out, Recessional: Angelicas Milicias, Wherewithal Shall A Young Man, Love Is A Beautiful Dream, This Heart That Flutters Near My Heart, Wild Grass, Labbra Vermiglie E Belle, Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair, Dulaman, Shenandoah, Spanish Carol, Love Is Letting Go, Blues In the Night, Wade in the Water, We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace, Christmas Time Is Here Manhattan Transfer with Cincinnati Pops : Got Swing? Dubbed "The Prince of Pops" by the Chicago Tribune, Erich Kunzel's Cincinnati Pops Orchestra has been nominated for 5 Grammies under his direction, winning one in 1998, and we have to say that this is some of the best, most spirited big-band swing we've ever heard. Of special interest to us, of course, are the vocals, which are supplied by one of our favorite jazz groups, The Manhattan Transfer, former (and founding) member of the MT, 9-time Grammy winner Janis Siegel, and inventive singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli. There are 14 all accompanied (in fact, 7 of them are completely instrumental) tunes here, and not surprisingly our favorites are "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie," "Sugar" (That Sugar Baby of Mine), "Skyliner," and "Clouds" (adapted from "Nuages,") featuring the MT; "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Avalon" with John Pizzarelli; and "I'll Be Seeing You," with Janis Siegel. As we would place the Swing Era at or near the top of all musical eras, we thought "Got Swing" was a treat, and every tune gave us the urge to get up and dance! Songlist: String of Pearls, Stompin' at the Savoy, Choo Choo Ch' Boogie, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Sugar, Skyliner, Blues in the Night, Avalon, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Clouds, adapted from "Nuages", Jumpin' at the Woodside, Flying Home, I'll Be Seeing You, Sweet Georgia Brown Masters of Harmony : Portrait "Portrait" is a strong new collection from the dynamic, 7-time BHS International Chorus champions Masters of Harmony. 15 finely-crafted tunes including some of our favorites "Go Down Moses, "I Will Go Sailing No More," "Good Luck Charm" and "Sold" (sung with 2008 BHS Quartet champs OC Times), "Stand By Me," "Nice 'N Easy" (sung with 2008 Far Western District Quartet champs Masterpiece, "Yona From Arizona," "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" and "Portrait of My Love Medley." The Masters, directed by Michigan Jake member Mark Hale, has a wonderful, complex sound that adds new dimensions to these classic songs. Enjoy one of Barbershop's great champion choruses's. Songlist: Go Down Moses, I Will Go Sailing No More, Blues in the Night, Roll On, Mississippi, Good Luck Charm, For Good, Stand By Me, Bach Fugue in D Minor, Nice 'N' Easy, Wonderful One, Yona From Arizona, Time After Time, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, Sold, Portrait of My Love Medley Mel Torme & The Mel-Tones : Live with The Mel-Tones Vol 2 Songlist: Fine and Dandy, Isn't It Romantic, Blues in the Night, What Is This Thing Called Love?, Let's Fall In Love, The Money Song, Ah, But It Happens, Hooray for Love, Get Out and Get Under, Lover's Delight, It's the Sentimental Thing to Do, A Fine Romance, Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams, Back in Your Own Backyard, I Get Along Without You Very Well, Friendship, This Is the Moment, How High the Moon, It's Magic, Fairmont College (Reprise) Nightlife : Blues In The Night Though not generally identified with blues, in fact barbershop does have something in common with jazz and blues alike - they are all distinctly American musical forms. As David Wright says in his liner notes describing the quartet (he also arranged four songs), "the richness of their blend evoked the texture of blues and gospel..." These 1996 gold medalists (and members of the heralded Masters of Harmony Chorus), are indeed staking out their own forty acres of barbershop territory. Sublime adaptations of the title track, "How High The Moon," "Satin Doll," "Steal Away" and "Baby It's Cold Outside" are just some of the wonderful surprises in store. While staying true to the core structure of barbershop, these arrangements are festooned with borrowed inflections from other styles, and gently evoke the romance of days gone by! Songlist: How High The Moon, Mobile, Satin Doll, My Funny Valentine, Slap That Bass, Steal Away, When I Lift Up My Head, Blues In The Night, Ride The Chariot, London By Night, Baby, It's Cold Outside, Today, Watch What Happens, Who Will Buy?, One Moment in Time Phil Mattson and VoicesIowa : Count Your Blessings Formed at Southwestern Community College's School for Music Vocations in 1991, the mixed-voice sextet VoicesIowa was recently honored by Down Beat Magazine as "Vocal Jazz Group of the Year." Their repertoire also includes Renaissance part-songs, 19th and 20th century compositions and arrangements of contemporary music. Their Director Phil Mattson has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards. These 12 songs, recorded live at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, MN, feature Mattson-arranged winners like "Snow Covers the Valley," Bach's "Jesu, Meine Freude," Burt Bacharach's "Alfie," "Never Let Me Go," Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen's classic "Blues in the Night" and Irving Berlin's "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep." Ward Swingle's "Country Dances" and the Swingle-arranged "Satchmo," Duke Ellington's "Don't Mean A Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing," Anders Edenroth of the Real Group's "Friendship" and Bobby McFerrin's "Jubilee" are other favorites. Great stuff, from the first cut to the last! Songlist: Since All Is Passing, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Snow Covers the Valley, Jesu, Meine Freude, Alfie, Jubilee, Never Let Me Go, Satchmo, Friendship, Blues in the Night, Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep), Country Dances VoicesIowa : Here's To Life! The bouyant sound of the Voices Iowa, conducted and arranged by Phil Mattson, certainly one of the most prominent jazz educators in the field. Emanating from the same general neighborhood as the Singers Unlimited or Real Group, Voices Iowa actually covers one Real Group arrangement on this CD-"Sa Skimrande Var Aldrig Havet"-as well as Take 6's "Gold Mine," so they certainly set a high standard for themselves. "Blues In the Night" is smoky and seductive, "Satchmo" a picaresque tribute to Louis Armstrong that sets lyrics to a Joplin rag. "If I Loved You" is is an economical a cappella version that shows why Phil Mattson is so respected-every note is important, neither too many or too few. Five of the songs are accompanied. Songlist: Here's To Life, Almighty God/Heaven, Gold Mine, Corcavado, Blues In The Night, If I Loved You, Satchmo, I Remember Clifford, Sa Skimrande Var Aldrig Havet Phil Mattson and VoicesIowa : Count Your Blessings Formed at Southwestern Community College's School for Music Vocations in 1991, the mixed-voice sextet VoicesIowa was recently honored by Down Beat Magazine as "Vocal Jazz Group of the Year."
