"Molly Malone" (also known as "Cockles and Mussels" or "In Dublin's Fair City") is a popular song set in Dublin, Ireland, which has become the unofficial anthem of Dublin. The song tells the fictional tale of a fishwife who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin, but who died young, of a fever. In the late 20th century a legend grew up that there was a historical Molly, who lived in the 17th century. She is typically represented as a hawker by day and part-time prostitute by night. In contrast she has also been portrayed as one of the few chaste female street-hawkers of her day.
Known as Dublin's unofficial anthem, this Irish tune is bright and energetic and captures the warm and generous spirit of the Irish people. Like so many Irish folk songs, this tells an endearing story, one that will capture the imagination of your singers.

An entry-level piece, this arrangement of the well-known folk song provides a gentle challenge for two-part mixed choir of cambiata and baritone voices, with supporting piano accompaniment.

Rich harmony and texture take this simple Irish folk song to new heights. Blaine Shover's a cappella arrangement of Molly Malone is a colorful tapestry of thick harmonic textures and pure, quiet unisons. Written for SATB, a cappella, there is some divisi in each voice part, which adds to the brilliant collage of tone colors that permeates the piece. Melody and vocal accompaniment alternate between the men's and women's sections, then all four parts burst into lush harmony on the refrain. Great for contest or festival!
