Love for Sale" was originally considered in bad taste, even scandalous. In the initial Broadway production, it was performed by Kathryn Crawford, portraying a streetwalker, with three girlfriends (Waring's Three Girl Friends) as back-up singers, in front of Reuben's, a popular restaurant of the time. As a response to the criticism, the song was transferred from the white Crawford to the African American singer Elisabeth Welch, who sang with back-up singers in a scene set in front of Harlem's Cotton Club.
Despite the fact the song was banned from radio airplay, or perhaps because of it, it became a hit, with Libby Holman's version going to #5 and the "Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians" version going to #14, both in 1931.
Notable recordings since include Hal Kemp in 1939, Billie Holiday in 1945, Stan Kenton in 1950 (arranged by Pete Rugolo), Joyce Bryant in 1952,[1] Eartha Kitt in the 1950s, Ella Fitzgerald in 1956 (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook), and again in 1972 on her Ella Loves Cole album, Tony Bennett in 1957, Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley for 1958 Miles and Somethin' Else, Anita O'Day in 1959, Julie London in 1961, Dexter Gordon in 1962, Shirley Horn in 1963, Al Hirt on his 1965 album, Live at Carnegie Hall,[2]

Marion Linton : Cole Porter A Cappella Beginning as a waltz, "I Get A Kick Out Of You," this lively Cole Porter tune goes into 4 at the bridge. Initiated by the bass, this time change provides a good vehicle for practicing four in the space of three and vice versa. The tune is short, punctuated by rhythmic shots and ends with a bang. "Let's Do It" is impossible to sing without a smile. Humor, wit, quotes as well as insect and animal sounds thrive throughout its four verses. It's a challenge but well worth the work--and talk about a crowd please! "Love For Sale" is a challenging setting for Cole Porter's cynical look at love. From a soulful alto solo, we move to an up-tempo Latin groove suggestive of life on the street. Featured again in the bridge is the alto whose message is colored by humorous comments and quotes. Rich harmonies abound and build to a dynamic ending. A vamp is used throughout "What Is This Thing Called Love" as an introduction, interlude, ending and even as accompaniment for a be-bop chorus where high women's voices bemoan the pain of love gone wrong. Soprano, as solo or section, is featured on melody throughout this chart. Songlist: I Get A Kick Out of You, Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love), Love For Sale, What Is This Thing Called Love? Phil Mattson : The Arrangements of Phil Mattson Here's a collection from vocal jazz guru Phil Mattson. "Love For Sale" was written for Chanticleer in a gospel a cappella feeling featuring a female solo. "Dancing In The Dark" was arranged for the Swedish vocal jazz ensemble, The Real Group. It is written in an a cappella bossa nova groove with some quasi-funk sections. The arrangement, which treats text as a metaphor for human life, features vocal percussion opportunities. The classic Manhattan Transfer arrangement of "Body and Soul" includes lyrics about Coleman Hawkins and jazz singer Eddie Jefferson. "Love Lost" - An original piece by the Four Freshmen that was the title song from their beautiful album with strings. Has opportunities to feature both vocal and instrumental solos. SATB with rhythm section. "You Must Believe In Spring" - A lovely text beautifully set to music by Michel LeGrand with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, featuring spots for three short solos. One of the most profound lyrics over the last fifteen years. With piano.
