Alexander L'Estrange : Winter Songs Winter Songs comprises three contrasting songs for upper voices and piano accompaniment. Each song presents a view of winter that implores us to value kindness and compassion above all else. "Hibernation" sets the wintery scene, leading into the musical theater-style song "Reality Check," a touching tale from the perspective of a homeless person. The jazzy and uplifting "Presence" completes the set with its swinging style featuring a fun scat section; the song's chorus is perfect for adding choreography. Winter Songs would be ideal for school and youth choir performances at any time of the year but particularly during the winter months, including at Christmas. Songlist: Hibernation, Reality Check, Presence Howard Goodall : Winter Lullabies Winter Lullabies by Howard Goodall is a beautiful cycle of six loosely interwoven movements of various languages (English, Gaelic, German, Spanish) arranged for solo harp/piano and upper voices. Although the story of the nativity lies at the core of the work - celebrating motherhood and the different moods that might be embraced by a lullaby - it also explores associated secular issues of homelessness, displacement and flight, showing the relevance that this timeless story continues to have for our modern lives. Songlist: Now Winter Nights Enlarge, Stille Nacht, Crossing the Border, Joyful Lullaby, Sorrowful Lullaby, Lullaby of Winter Judith Bingham : A Cold Spell - 5 Carols For Winter Judith Bingham was born in Nottingham, England, in 1952, and grew up in Sheffield. She won the BBC Young Composer Award in 1977, and was a regular member of the BBC Singers from 1983-96. Since 2005 she has been their Associate Composer. Each movement depicts a different time of day, beginning with the cold darkness before dawn ('Timid Star') and concluding with the evening turning into dusk and then darkness ('Snow Toward Evening'). The music conjures up vivid images of a cold and crisp winter, and of swirling, dancing snowflakes. Songlist: Timid Star, A Winter Dawn, Into Morning, A Winter Day, Snow Toward Evening Veljo Tormis : Winter Patterns Veljo Tormis is recognized especially for his vocal and choral works. Text: Robert Southwell Publisher: Boosey & Hawkes Difficulty level: 3 The Ceremony of Carols is one of Britten's best-known and most-performed works. It is a brilliantly conceived and dramatic concert work which sees the voices process to their places singing unaccompanied plainsong and, at the end, processing out again to the same chant. These movements can also be accompanied but strictly only if the voices do not process. The final Alleluia can be repeated as many times as necessary to get the singers to and from their destination. The carols are for three-part children's voices (though, of course they can be sung by female adults as well) and they form a two-part work around a central Interlude for harp which is based on the plainsong from the Procession. Variety is the key word here as all the carols have such individual identities. The forthright Wolcum Yole!, the deliciously lyrical There is no Rose, the swinging Balulalow, the fiery and dramatic This little Babe all contribute
Composer: Benjamin Britten

Peter Assad composed both the text and music for this madrigal. The text can stand for the uniqueness of a snowflake as the title dictates, or metaphorically for someone else as perhaps the dedication to his wife connotes. The gentle harmonies depict a style reminiscent of the early 20th century and the word painting is tender and clear. Advanced high school, college and community choirs will enjoy this lovely piece in winter concerts or whenever snowflakes are near. Medium difficulty.
