Burchard has become one of the most commissioned composers and for good reason. His madrigal style is consistently enthralling, with an easy harmonic flow, gentle suspensions, and a fluid density that is uniquely his own. The Burns text is famously familiar, but the tune is completely original. The piece begins with the introduction of the theme sung by unison sopranos. Parts are added until the full divisi complement of voices are encircling each other in typical Burchard fashion. Medium in difficulty and appropriate for any concert situation.

The text by Mark Twain, from a poem by Robrt Richardson, and although titled Dedication it is more of a blessing. A beautiful concert closer for advanced high school or college voices, Richard Burchard's music is rich and warm. The notes aren't all that difficult but singing all the gentle dissonances in tune will be the challenge.

A modern day madrigal, this demonstrates the artistry of Richard Burchard. The Teasdale text paints words of description with much deeper meanings, ultimately releasing the fear of death. The melodic lines outrank expectation with stunning leaps that are surprisingly sensuous. The responsive chorus sections are like joyful dances around the Maypole, playful and buoyant. A wonderful concert or festival piece.
