Classical singing is rather a nebulous term and covers several different vocal styles and repertoire. Here we offer a collection of songbooks for the classically trained singer, both the experienced and the training singer. Ideal for practicing and rehearsing. |
Although often known for their orchestral and instrumental compositions many of the great classical composers also created chorals both as accompaniment for their works but also as separate, often a cappella, compositions.
An art song is a vocal music composition, usually written for one voice with piano accompaniment, and usually in the classical art music tradition. By extension, the term art song is used to refer to the collective genre of such songs. An art song is most often a musical setting of an independent poem or text, intended for the concert repertory as part of a recital or other relatively formal social occasion.
Opera is part of the Western classical music tradition and to sing opera is one of the most challenging yet rewarding styles of singing one can perform. To be a true professional takes years of training and professional coaching however the amateur or aspiring singer who enjoys belting out an aria can learn a lot and have fun without dedicating one’s whole life. We offer here some books of advise from some of the most famous classical singers along with time-proved methods and exercises that have been helping to train classical voice for many years.
A vocalise is a vocal exercise (often one suitable for performance) without words, which is sung on one or more vowel sounds. An exercise, composition, or arrangement in which a performer sings solmization syllables or other meaningless vocal sounds rather than a text. Vocalise dates back to the mid-18th century. Jean-Antoine Berard's 1755 compilation L 'art du chant includes a selection of songs (sans paroles) by composers such as Lully and Rameau, chosen for their value as exercises in vocal technique. Accompanying the exercises were instructions on mastering the technical challenges they posed. By the 19th century vocalises were commonly composed specifically for pedagogical purposes rather than being adapted from existing songs
The 19th century was the golden age of classical music and, although much was orchestral, there is plenty of great choral composistions as well.
