Voices Of Lee : Encore

Review: Eight men and six women form the acclaimed Voices of Lee (University of Cleveland, TN), directed since their debut in 1994 by Danny Murray, apply their rich harmonic blend and top-drawer soloists to their fourth winning album. "Encore" begins with Barry Manilow's "One Voice," a jazzy, upbeat "Power in Praisin' the Lord," a striking, powerful vocal-percussion gem, "Mercy Seat," the heartfelt "Ho, Everyone Who Is Thirsty" (arranged by Derrick Johnson), a scattish, bright arrangement of "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High," the Doo-Woppy Gospel number "When God Dips His Love," the traditional hymns "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Have You Met Jesus" (both also arranged by Johnson), and a bonus track of "Mercy Seat," our personal favorite. Ten songs in total, and there's not a weak track among them. Confident solos, solid harmonies, great arrangements-"Encore" just knocked our socks off! It's one of the best Contemporary Christian albums we've heard this year.

"In God's Hands" is their fifth excellent CD. Review: The pride of Cleveland, TN's Lee University, The Voices of Lee is a 16-member, mixed-voice a cappella ensemble, long recognized by us as one of the elite collegiate groups in their 16 years of existence. They have released 5 excellent CDs, a pair of wonderful live DVDs and in 2009 were chosen to compete on NBC's hit show The Sing-Off, based on our own national competition, The Harmony Sweepstakes! Director Danny Murray, who led the group to a Second Runner-Up Sing-Off finish and exposure to millions of new fans with perfect performances like their cover of Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror" that's a YouTube favorite. Review: The contemporary Christian group Glad is one of the most consistently popular groups of the genre. This "Collector's Series," drawn from their eight-CD catalog, shows why: they've developed their own readily-identifiable sound (multi-layered, complex, big) and they do it really well. For example, "Doer of Your Word" has the easy familiarity and sing-along refrain of a pop song, but beyond the surface the arrangement and production is simply stunning. Vocal trills, shifts of meter, countermelody upon countermelody utilizing voice as instrument-this is their standard modus operandi. Listening to the tracks over and over, one hears them differently each time, as if studying the brushstrokes of a painting individually. One new track, "Praise To The Lord" by John Rutter, is an added bonus.

Martins : An A Cappella Hymn Collection / In His Presence

Review: Two previously released CDs now on one disc. The Martins are a Southern Christian trio of one male and two female singers who have produced many accompanied recordings. This collection is their only a cappella CD, featuring spirituals such as 'Holy, Holy, Holy,' ''Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus' and 'Softly And Tenderly.' The Martins' sound is a pleasing hybrid of influences, including both the white Southern church tradition that was represented by shape note singing and the hymns of Ira Sankey, as well as the melodic inflections that are familiar to all who hear black gospel. One track, a medley of five songs, travels a similar orbit to Take 6, while others have the gently lulling melodies of the simplest folk tune. No matter, they are all rendered exquisitely, and their sincere emotion is amplified by the restraint of the production, which is present and immediate. After being out of print for many years this rerelease also includes an additional 12 tracks form an earlier live recording. The Martins have garnered six Dove awards and a Grammy nomination to become one of Christian music's most critically acclaimed and best-selling vocal groups.
