Acapella Doo Wop

Doo-wop: a distinctly American musical form that flourished in the 1950's, emerging from urban centers such as New York and Chicago. It's vital statistics? Groups comprised of four to five members, bass/baritone/tenor (or a first and second tenor) and lead, singing in three or four part harmony; frequent use of falsetto; predominance of "nonsense syllables"; dynamic bass parts; instrumentation subservient to vocals or nonexistent; simple but heavy backbeats and lyrical themes that espouse love and longing for "the one." It's pedigree? The vocal harmony groups of the 1940's, such as the Ink Spots and the Mills Bros., rhythm and blues, which incorporated elements of jazz and swing; country and gospel. Each of these individual cells would develop into the matrix called rock and roll, of which doo-wop is considered a part.

The "Rock 'n Roll Jubilee Ball," presented by legendary dee jay Alan Freed in 1955, featured acts the Clovers, Drifters, Harptones and Moonglows, a spectrum of talent that was representative as any of the musical trends of this dynamic period. A bevy of independent record labels sprung up to support and popularize the new music, including Chess, Vee Jay, King, Jubilee, Atlantic, Gee, Laurie and Dootone, and the personalities behind these often one room operations were practically as notorious as the artists themselves: George Goldner, Herb Abramson, Bess Berman, Syd Nathan.

As for the artists, they started young and often burned out early, and frequently realized meager rewards save the excitement of seeing their names on a theater marquee. With few exceptions, the acts were not adequately financed, and though technology was advancing at an unheard of pace (which provided new outlets and opportunity in the form of radio and television), the recording process was generally primitive, with groups rushed in and out of the studio in assembly line fashion. Indeed, that is why so many of the groups of this period sang "acapella": it was simply cheaper, as the producers didn't need to pay for a band! By the way, "acapella" as a moniker (as distinct from the Italian term "a cappella," which, strictly defined, means "in the church style") evolved after a conversation between Donn Fileti, Leo Rogers (of Bruce Records) and Wayne Stierle, according to Wayne in his liner notes for the Moonglows "Glowing in Acapella." However it's described or whatever it's called, doo-wop in general and acapella doo-wop in particular represents a golden age in American vocal harmony, with a loyal following that remains vital to this day.

Frankie & The Fashions : Acappella Starlight Sessions

Review: Philadelphia's Frankie Lafaro and the Fashions came together as a Doo Wop group in 1963. They first recorded in 1964, but because of the death of their manager, the material was never released. Lead vocalist and songwriter Frankie, who is known as the "Frank Sinatra of Doo Wop," and his 4 fabulous Fashions are still sounding as sweet and pure as ever, and they are finally receiving the success that has been long overdue them. Our favorites include the Lafaro originals "Philadelphia," "Blame It On Another Rainy Day," "Sometimes," "What A Rush," "Mr. Time" and "Lost Masters." Frankie sings one of the best leads we've heard, and getting to hear this hot, unreleased Doo Wop is a treat!

Frankie & The Fashions : Philadelphia

Review: It was in the Little Italy neighborhood of West Philly that four teenagers formed a band inspired by the music of Dion & The Belmonts, The Earls and Little Anthony & The Imperials. You could hear them on the corner of 49th St. In April of 1964 they recorded a song called 'Funny Girl' which was never released because their manager died just after the track was cut. Through this tragic circumstance the group never went commercial but did continue to just cruise around Philadelphia and share street corner symphonies with other groups, alternating songs for their own pleasure and that of passersby. Thirty-three years later lead singer Frankie Lafaro (who has been called the Frank Sinatra of doo-wop) and the four Fashions finally recorded both some of the tunes they have sung all their lives and some of Frankie's originals.

Frankie Lymon And The Teenagers : Very Best Of

Review: Frankie Lymon's meteoric rise to superstardom in 1956 (and his subsquent crash) has been well-documented. As the lead singer of the most successful of the teenage doo-wop groups, Frankie's precocious talent resulted in hits such as 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love,' 'I Want You To Be My Girl' and 'Goody Goody,' songs that are memorable still. The sixteen tunes on this CD were recorded between 1955 through 1958; most were issued on George Goldner's Gee label. Frankie's adolescent tenor was confident, his interpretative skills well-developed, and his pitch stable; unfortunately for him, as his voice matured, it no longer was the attraction it once was. To hear Frankie sing 'I'm Not A Know It All' and 'I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent' hold a pathetic irony, but regardless, these songs are the defining sound of 1950's pop

Gel Caps : Take Two

Review: The Gel Caps are Steve Tucker, Dana Buck, Andrew Gorney and Mike Reed, four sunglass-wearing cool guys who've been gathering fans at car shows, bars, parties and other events throughout lower Michigan since 1989, doing street corner doo-wop. There are numerous theories concerning the origin of the group's name, but the liner notes say that our guess is 'as good as anybody else's.' Some of our favorite cuts: 'What's Your Name,' 'Don't That Prove I Love You,' 'My Girl,' and 'When I Woke Up This Morning' and 'Under The Boardwalk,' 'Zombie Jamboree' and '1000 Miles Away.' Harbor Lights : Absolutely Acappella

Review: Indiana's own four-man, one woman Harbor Lights bring us their second classic Doo-Wop collection, featuring ten of our all-time favorite hits. They're all here, a heartbreaking "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," "Venus," "The Wanderer," "Harbor Lights," "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," "Denise," "My Girl," "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye," "Only Sixteen" and "Daddy's Home." Rich, solid basslines and pitch-perfect leads with the kind of attitude and feeling that used to create overnight hits, this is the sweet, juicy Doo-Wop a lot of groups from the east coast wish they could sing. Particular fine are Cheryl DeRosier's leads-listen to her nail "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and "Harbor Lights," and you'll see what we mean.

Harbor Lights : Almost Acappella

Review: When we want to hear authentic Doo Wop, we think of Indiana. That's right, Indiana-4-man, 1-woman Harbor Lights is the real deal, with the genuine New York Doo Wop sound. On "Almost" they nail Doo Wop standards like "Come Go With Me," "Little Star," "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." They add a female lead to Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," and reinterpret pop hits like the Temptations' "Just My Imagination" and Peter & Gordon's "I Go To Pieces" becomes an a cappella classic. Ricky Nelson's "Poor Little Fool" is a sweet, nostalgic winner, as is Richie Valens' "Donna." Some accompaniment. "Almost" is the soul of East Coast Doo Wop from America's heartland!

Harbor Lights : No Strings Attached

Review: No Strings Attached" is Harbor Lights' fourth album on the Collectables label. As in their three previous albums, the emphasis is on vocal and production excellence. This album really showcases the group's range of sound, from the poppy Connie Francis hit "Where The Boys Are", to the Doo Woppy "Sunday Kind of Love"classic by The Harptones. The "Motown" sound shines through with a Ronnie Spector flavored performance of "Be My Baby, and in "Mister Blue" the group captures the smooth, soft as velvet sound of the fabulous "Fleetwoods" Because each individual in the group is a distinctive lead singer, Harbor Lights offers great versatility. Each individual tune on the album has a completely different flavor in terms of lead and vocal backgrounds. This keeps it interesting and fresh. On this album Harbor Lights has added a subtle bed of vocal percussion, without jeopardizing the integrity of the a cappella sound.

Harptones : A Sunday Kind Of Love

Review: One of the most important 1950's vocal groups, the Harptones, from Harlem, were a loose-knit conglomeration organized around the nucleus of Willie Winfield, lead, and Raoul Cita, pianist, arranger and utility vocalist. Though a R & B group, they had listened carefully to, and favored, the five part jazz harmonies of the Four Freshmen. The Harptones use of five part harmony in the R & B context was revolutionary at the time, and as a consequence, the Harptones sound became a primary influence on the next generation of doo-wop vocal groups after them. Songs such as the definitive 'Sunday Kind Of Love,' 'My Memories Of You' and 'What Is Your Decision,' though never big national hits, were significant musically. The group did not have the benefit of a major label push, recording for Bruce, Paradise, Andrea, and Rama, among others, but they were part of several historic gigs, Alan Freed's 'Rock 'N Roll Ball' among them. Windfield's easy delivery, in concert with the smooth and clean harmonies of the group, are just as sweet today.

Infernos : Hotter Than Hell

Review: Clifton Records brings us a Ronnie I Production, 22 songs by the 5-man Original Infernos, featuring a number of originals new to our ears. In the 1970s five young men from the Italian section of Newark, NJ formed a vocal group with band called "Sidewalk Symphony." By the mid 70s the group had become a hot act in the nightclubs of Newark and the Jersey shore. The rise of Disco forced them to add more banal dance material, and a number of group members left. But in 1980 Tommy Vitale, Michael Schiavo, Sal Fede and Bobby Stefanelli hooked up with Bobby "L" Leszczak (who sang with "Retrospect") to sing more challenging and obscure a cappella tunes, recording with Ronnie I on the Clifton label. Of these 22 songs, several are accompanied (and very good), but we of course prefer the a cappella tunes: "I Beg For Your Love," "Chapel of Dreams," "In My Diary," "Here Is Why I Love You," "Shrine of St. Cecilia," "Give Me Your Love,""False Alarm," "I'll Be True," "That's What Girls Are Made For," "Six Nights A Week," "That's The Way It Goes," and a couple of live cuts recorded at UGHA, "Count Every Star/My Heart's Desire," and "Looking/Don't Say Goodnight." The new material here is very good, and affirms that Doo-Wop isn't resting on its classic material but is alive ans!growing, through excellent, authentic a cappella groups like the Infernos!

Review: "A'Capella New Orleans" by local favorites Jay, Ray & Gee is a generous helping of soulful Doo-Wop, tasty as a hot mess of Cajun shrimp. "Runaround Sue," "Save The Last Dance for Me," "Who Wrote the Book of Love?," the Otis Redding anthem "Dock of the Bay," "Don't Know Much About History," "Games People Play," Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl," "I'll Be There," "In the Still of the Night," "Let It Whip," "Kiss and Say Goodbye," finishing with the spirituals "This Little Light of Mine" and "Savior, Hear My Humble Cry." These guys have paid some dues, you can hear it in their voices, and we would fly to New Orleans just to catch some of their authentic, roots Doo-Wop live at some funky Big Easy bar!

Jerome Alexander (Jay, Ray, and Gee) : Sacred Doo-Wop

Review: New Orleans, LA's Tight Harmony Records brings us this joyous, spirited collection of a cappella Doo-Wop Gospel featuring the vocal, writing and arranging talents of Jerome Alexander (of Jay, Ray and Gee) and a strong supporting group. These 18 songs, originally recorded in the early 90s, are from tape masters, luckily preserved when the original masters were lost due to Katrina. Alexander originals "Jesus Is Our Lead Singer," "The Ten Commandments of God," "Hambone Praise Song," "Put On The Armor of God," "I'll Be A Fool for the Lord," " "Don't Let Him Fool, Rule or Ride You," "Don't Forget to Say Your Prayers" and "He Did It for You and Me" are favorites, as is the raucous African American Jubilee Song, "My Dungeon Shook and My Chains Fell Off." There's some accompaniment (keyboard and percussion) on a few songs, but the emphasis is on the fine vocals and spirited message. Alexander is a major Gospel/Doo Wop talent, and his group, smooth, hot and experienced, has no trouble keeping up. "Sacred" is a surprising, fresh collection of juicy roots Gospel, and we had big fun listening to every cut!

Lafaros : Acappella Serenades

Review: The Laferos is Frankie Lafero harmonizing with himself, and we bet he had a good laugh coming up with the 'group' name! You know Frank, from West Philly, who formed Frankie and the Fashions in 1963-well, this gifted performer went into a studio and laid down all the vocal parts on this CD, one by one. There are great covers: 'Earth Angel,' 'Remember Nina,' 'It's Only Make Believe,' 'Sea of Love,' 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me,' 'Dream Lover,' and a treat, two of Frank's originals, 'I'll Never Love Again,' and 'Making Love for the First Time.' We can say without fear of contradiction that the voices on Acappella Serenades are perfectly matched, and although we're not expecting a live tour anytime soon, this is some of the smoothest and sweetest doo-wop we've heard!

Larkings : A Story Untold

Review: The Larkings are a quintet of singers from Brooklyn each of whom have been harmonizing all their lives. One member was singing for nickels at age five! Bass singer Bernard 'BJ' Jones has sung for the Drifters and The Persuasions. What the five have created, after almost three years in the studio, is a labor of love. The selection of twenty-one songs come mostly form the mid 1950s for that was the golden age of doo-wop music which was relegated to the back burner by The Beatles' and 'the British Invasion' of the early sixties. The Larkings have consciously emulated the original arrangements as a tribute to the great doo-wop groups of that time. So they give tribute to the Nutmegs, The Moonglows, The Cadillacs, Five Keys, Spiders, El Dorados, The Dells and more on this very special recording.

Laurels : Keeping Tradition

Review: Harmony is a universal urge, and when it accompanies a love theme, it's the pinnacle of music-making. The Laurels first sought that peak in 1959, harmonizing at sock hops and at the studio. Forty years later, original member Dick Muse and four others took their places around the mike to record 16 classic and "should-have-been-classic" doo-wop tunes. "Please Mr. Sun," "Ball & Chain," "Everyone's Laughing," the top-40 hit "Barefootin'," "Willette," "Cold Feet," "For Your Love," "Something's Got A Hold On Me," "Lundy Dundy," "Time Can Make You Change" and "Sweet Was The Wine" and others. All a cappella except for the final cut, "Rhythm." These are authentic, gravelly-bass, soaring tenor, sweet harmony doo-wop, the kind we love to hear. "Keeping" is a keeper!

Little Anthony and the Imperials : Pure Acappella

Review: Brooklyn, NY's Little Anthony and the Imperials are still performing, and their Doo-Wop chops (including Anthony's creamy falsetto) are as sweet as they were when their own big hit, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" was on top of the charts! "Pure" is introduced by radio personality Bobby Jay, who gives us interesting info about each song before each song, as if he was doing a radio show. There are 14 tasty cuts here, the title tune, then a Doo-Wop "best-of,"The Valentines' "Don't Say Goodnight," The Eldorados' "I'll Be Forever Loving You," The Flamingos' "I'll Be Home," The Heartbeats' "You're A Thousand Miles Away," The Penguins' "Earth Angel"/The Clovers' "Devil or Angel" medley, the Hi-Lo's arrangement of "Georgia," "I Only Have Eyes For You," the a cappella anthem "Goodnight, Sweetheart"-this is some of the best, most authentic a cappella Doo-Wop we've heard, by one of the premier groups-it doesn't get any better than this!

Los Zafiros : Bossa Cubana

Review: The five young men of Los Zafiros (The Sapphires), formed in Cuba in 1962, had a brief but legendary career as doo-wop/pop stars due to their extraordinary soundâ the vocal virtuousity of doo-wop and r&b, blended with bolero, calypso, bossa nova and the rhythmic heritage of Cuba. It was a smash in Havana and beyond in the sixties, and it's a definate treat to listen to today. Particularly marvelous is the soaring, supremely-controlled falsetto of Ignacio Elejalde. Beginning with their first hit single, "La Caminadora," the group got into the archetypical rock star on tour craziness, fights, drinking, destroying hotel rooms, meeting the Beatles (who wanted them to stay), touring Moscow, Poland, Germany and Europeâ that led to the early deaths of all but one of the singers. What they left behind, judging by these 17 hits, is a legacy of great vocal harmony. The rhythmic gem "Bossa Cubana," the lovely "Cancion de Orfeo," the dance hit "Y Sabes Bien," "La Caminadora," the party tune "Puchunguita, Ven," Ignacio's falsetto on "Mi Oracion," the swinging "Un Nombre de Mujer" and finishing with the slow dance tune "Canta lo Sentimental." All songs are accompanied, but the voices are the focus here, and they are exceptional. "Bossa Cubana" is big, fat, salsa-flavored fun from 1960s Cuba!

Review: There are some doo-wop groups from whom the clean, smooth, crisp sound just seems to flow like a street corner water fountain, like it did with the original groups who burst onto the airwaves in the 1950s and 60s. The 5-man Magic Touch is one of those groups, and 'Sincerely' just goes to show how appealing and timeless the combination of great arranging, soaring harmonies and classic material can be. Some favorites: 'Ain't No Woman Like The One I Love,' 'Just My Imagination,' 'Rama Lama Ding Dong,' 'Twilight Time,' Bobby Darin's 'Dream Lover' (OK, we know it was a hit for Del Shannon), 'In The Still of the Night' and the title tune, but we have to say that these are 19 of the best doo-wop tunes we've ever heard!

MC6 : Doo Wop A Cappella

Review: Jackson, Paul, Kim, Joe, Gary, Dan and Rick have at least two things in common: they're all wonderful Doo-Wop singers, and they're earning a lot of fans in Arizona! "Burgers, Shakes Doo-Wop," contains 16 pretty straightforward covers of Doo-Wop standards like Bob Gaudio's "Sherry," Brian Wilson's "Little Deuce Coupe," Fred Parris' "In the Still of the Night," Hart & Rodgers' "Blue Moon," "The Lion Sleeps Tonight..." this album might have been called "Greatest Doo-Wop Hits of All Time!" These 7 guys (MC6 plus 1?) absolutely nail every song, and the additional voices add more richness and depth to the harmonies. Other favorites are "Up on the Roof" and "One Fine Day" by Carole King and Gerry Goffin; "Runaround Sue" by Ernie Maresca and Dion Dimucci, Al Yankovic's very silly "Since You've Been Gone," Del Shannon's "I Go to Pieces," Billy Joel's "The Longest Time" and the album closes with Harmony Sweeps audience favorite "Goodnight Sweetheart" by James Hudson and Calvin Carter. MC6 clearly loves Doo-Wop and entertaining us, and, like the burgers and shakes we remember, it's all big fun and delicious!

MC6 : Doo Wop Christmas

Review: Mesa, AZ's own all-male sextet MC6 brings us a sweet and upbeat Doo-Wop holiday CD of 11 songs, entitled "Christmas." "Away in a Manger" is reinvented as a finger-popping Doo-Wop standard with soaring leads, "Candlesong" is a romantic holiday torch tune perfect for slow dancing, and "Feliz Navidad" and "Sleigh Ride" are spirited, richly harmonic covers. Other favorites are "White Christmas," which channels Bing Crosby's droll, chocolaty baritone and sparkling tenor backup, "Let It Snow" is as bright and romantic as a yule log on the fire, and we hardly recognized, but enjoyed the new arrangement of "Silent Night." "Away in a Manger" is richly harmonic and traditionally beautiful, "Mary Did You Know" is nicely arranged and thought-provoking, and "He is Born" closes the collection with an inspiring, harmonic gem. If you love authentic Doo-Wop and Christmas, don't miss this one!

Review: Mike Mastrolia (The Acappella Kid) sings soaring leads for Memories of You, has been singing Doo-Wop since the late 50s when he recorded an album with The Fortells at age 16. The other four men have been paying their dues equally as long, and have nicknames like "Singin' Eddie" and "Mr. Bassman." 17 songs, from "Gloria," "Darling I Love You," "Chapel of Dreams" and "I'm So Young" to "My Juanita," "My Vow To You," "Sentimental Reasons" and, appropriately, "My Memories of You." This is authentic stuff, much of which is new to us, from five guys who know what they're Doo-Wopping!

Memory Lane : Acappella Ave

Review: Though we have scant information on this sextet, save that they come from Pennsylvania, we can say that their sound was obviously inspired by the great doo-wop groups like the Spaniels and Moonglows. This is a 1999 release, but, as their name implies, the singers of Memory Lane aren't about today. Their arrangements really capture the flavor of the genuine article, the performances have punch and authority, and the blend is earthy, thick and resonant. Favorite cuts include 'California Dreamin',' 'Mio Amore' and 'I Like It Like That.'

Mighty Echoes : A Cappella Cool

Review: We will freely admit to loving LA's four Echoes, "Brothers in Harmony" Charlie, Harvey, John and Jon at first listen, almost 20 years ago. Many audience-pleasing live performances and three great CDs haven't changed our feelings as we joyously tear the annoying plastic wrap off "Cool" and treat our boombox to the Echoes' 4th collection of 15 Doo-Wop winners. Some of our favorites include an exquisitely meandering "I Only Have Eyes for You," a complex, soaring arrangement of Brian Wilson's "Good Vibrations" (that few groups would even attempt, much less nail), a rock-solid, soulful "Lean On Me," a silly, tough-talking "Daddy Cool," a richly harmonic cover of Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight," a powerful "Duke of Earl," a luscious "In The Still of the Night," an incongruous but marvelous "White Christmas," and the final tune, a foot-stomping "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." The Echoes have the tight arrangements, perfect pitch, soaring leads, deep basslines and love of singing that make "Cool" one of the best Doo Wop recordings of the year!

Mighty Echoes : A Cappella Doo Wop

Review: These guys have personality plus. Doo-wop and street corner harmonies only give a 'sort of' idea to their music shared on this, their first album which was released at the same time as their second. They start off doo-wop all right but immediately do Bruce Springsteen's 'Factory.' Then, thanking the Coasters, they proceed with a very funny arrangement of 'Youngblood.' Throughout the remainder of the fifteen cuts we are treated to lots of traditional oldies interspersed with Prince's 'Doves Cry,' Paul Simon & Joseph Shablala's 'Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes' and Peter Townsend's 'My Generation.' But that's what you'd expect from a bunch of guys who have been featured on TV's 'Who's The Boss,' 'Frank's Place' and 'Murphy Brown,' not to mention their roles as the singing firemen in the movie 'Wilder Napalm.' Review: The Mighty Echoes have always been among our favorite Doo Woppers (not the kind you get with fries and a Coke, wise guy), so we were very pleased to see their latest release. These guys have been having way too much fun singing street corner 50s and 60s doo-wop on large stages for the last 1 years, and a great deal of seeing them live finds its way onto their CDs! "AC Doo Wop II" is their best yet, beautifully arranged, with harmonies sweet and tight enough to make the Wolfman howl.

But giving the CD a listen makes a few things clear: they can sing some pretty sweet Doo-Wop! There are 20 tracks here; 'I'm So Young,' 'A Thousand Miles Away,' 'Duke of Earl,' 'The ABC's of Love' and 'Little Girl of Mine' are standouts. The N.C. let their music do the talking!

Nutmegs : The Rajahs of A Cappella

Review: The history of the Nutmegs, formed in 1955 in Connecticut, was all too brief-aside from the typical struggles for recognition and fame that are familiar to any group, first tenor and songwriter Leroy Griffin's life was cut tragically short in a mysterious accident. They realized a modicum of early notoriety, but as subsequent releases failed to sell, the group broke up and then reformed, calling themselves 'The Rajahs.' Subsequently they recorded a number of tracks, many of which are collected here (several are previously unreleased, and three feature an unknown female vocalist). The group heralded the convergence of rhythm and blues vocal harmony with the advent of rock and roll. 'Help Me' implores and entreats-notice how the back-up vocals create tension, which sets up the chord change to follow. 'Shifting Sand' has a vigorous repeating figure throughout the verse, changing to block chords for the next section; it's great observing how the group's arrangements, though simple, are consistently creative; it's all the more impressive, given that they wrote their own songs (reproductions of some of Leroy's charts are included in the liner notes).

Review: A Perfect Blend is 'Hollywood,' Gary, Trina, Gibson 'T' and Ernie. That's all we know from the liner notes, besides the names of the tunes and the fact that the CD was recorded at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia. But from the first notes of 'The Sun's Message' to the lingering echoes of 'Moonlight, Wine and Music,' we know something else - these 5 can flat-out sing. We also know that the folks at Sigma know their business - this is as clean, crisp and on-key as any doo-wop CD we've heard. Easily handling complex arrangements like a fine sports car handles a mountain road, A Perfect Blend remains smooth, sweet and professional throughout. Mostly covers here, possibly a couple of originals (at least we haven't heard them before). Some of our favorites: 'Smile,' 'A Change Is Gonna Come,' 'I Made It Through The Rain,' 'Silhouettes' and a rocking 'Drip Drop,' but they're all good. Suffice to say that this is one of the best doo-wop CDs we've heard, and the voices are, well, a Perfect Blend. Encore!

Perfect Blend : Masterpiece

Review: Established in Philly in the early 1990's, the four men and one woman of Perfect Blend sing a combination of classic doo-wop and soul hits. 'My World of Fantasy' has a fresh flavor, with Katrina Trowery on lead; it adapts the doo-wop backing arrangement with unexpected chords and an updated vocal style. 'Love Won't Let Me Wait' begins solo, the group joining in to punch up the hook; it's a simple but distinctive approach. In general, the group's modus operandi is to overlap within both styles, henceforth, 'A Perfect Blend.'

Persuasions : A Cappella Dreams

Review: In 1962 Jimmy "Bro" Hayes invited the 30 or 40 guys he had been singing with at a basketball court to his house to get together a little group. Four guys showed up, and they went on to form pioneering a cappella legends The Persuasions. The last few albums of these giants of a cappella have applied their trademark harmonies to their favorite music-a gospel collection, a children's record, the music of Frank Zappa (who gave them their first record contract), the Beatles and the Grateful Dead. "A Cappella Dreams" is a tasty smorgasbord of 15 hits. "I Have a Dream" is a Solomon Burke song based on the words of Martin Luther King, three songs made famous by Elvis, Mac Davis' "In the Ghetto," "Don't" and "Good Luck Charm," Tom Jones' "She's A Lady," Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay," "Ain't No Sunshine," the Four Tops' "When She Was My Girl," the Brook Benton song "Rainy Night in Georgia," Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love"-these are anthems of a cappella soul. Persuasions : A Cappella Soul

Review: We first time were blown away by the Persuasions at Hill Auditorium in Michigan in 1971, in an era when when rock bands like the Doors would roar into town with their huge amps, guitars and synthesizers, and Motown legends like Gladys Knight and the Pips would make the short trip down from the Motor City to show us how it was done. The Persuasions opened for soulful Gladys, and the audience, there to hear her sing her hit "Heard It Through the Grapevine," wasn't expecting much. Holding just microphones, the Persuasions put on a soul clinic, and left to an astonished, appreciative standing ovation! The second time was at the West Coast A Cappella Summit 5 or 6 years ago where we got to go backstage and talk to Jerry, Jimmy, Jayotis, Joe and Toubo after a sublime set. "A Cappella Soul" is on Best of Rounder Records' "Perfect 10 Series," and it's aptly labeled. The ten are "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Let Them Talk," "That's Heaven to Me," "Can't Do Sixty No More," "I Woke Up This Morning," the spiritual "Ain't That Good News," the Doo-Wop hit "Crying in the Chapel," "I'll Come Running Back to You," Elvis's "Return to Sender" and "Let's Get Married/Sincerely." Every one of these is marvelous. Treat yourself to "A Cappella Soul," a banquet from the legendary, pioneering Persuasions, still up there with mikes, doing their thing cool as you please, showing us mortals how it's done!

Review: Here's one of the group's earliest recordings which was originally released in 1969 and has now been digitally remastered and rereleased. The guys were young and their voices were strong and their enthusiasm is catching making this a truly authentic recording that catches the essence of the era perfectly. A must for all collectors.

Persuasions : Comin' At Ya

Review: Comin' At Ya is from from the very heart of The Persuasions singing career. It was by this time that they had introduced so many people to the world of a cappella music that they were becoming recognized as the definitive group in the field, period. Their street corner style had created a sound of such individuality that it is very seldom that another group can cover a Persuasions tune and not suffer by comparison. The blues, R&B and touches of doo-wop that were combined to create street corner singing are all present. "Just Because" is a blues of lost love. "I'll Be Forever Loving You" is an archetypical doo-wop. "Don't Let Him Take Your Love" covers the R&B and because of Jerry Lawson's fabulous shout-lead will never again be covered and sound quite right. They ought to retire that tune and hang it on the wall of some hall of fame.

Review: Over the years we have enjoyed the Persuasions' tributes to Frank Zappa, who gave them a break getting into the music business, the Beatles and the Grateful Dead. We saw them blow away the audience at the A Cappella Summit. But "Stardust" was recorded at two tiny studios in New Jersey in 1969, and not released until a full decade later. We hear (and see, in some vintage photos and a poster) the five Persuasions when they were just starting out building their huge legion of fans. Twelve songs, like "The Vow," "Swanee," "A Thousand Miles Away," "The Sun," "Ebb Tide," "I Won't Be the Fool Anymore," "Old Man River," "Rev's Medley" and "Gypsy Woman." Sweet, soulful, pioneering a cappella Doo Wop, straight from the source!

Review: It's amazing that the godfathers of contemporary a cappella have recorded for 30 years without previously singing a holiday album. But here it is, 14 songs performed as only the Persuasions can. The recording opens with a rollicking rendition of the title tune You're All I Want For Christmas, and includes a mix of traditional songs ("Silent Night," "Joy To The World") with contemporary tunes (doo-woppy "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer," "Merry Christmas Baby").

Quiet Storm : Silhouettes

Review: "Silhouettes" is the debut recording by Quiet Storm - Kamau Akiba, Martin Bentley, Richard Hidlebird and Vincent Tucker. As much as we appreciate authentic Doo-Wop by pioneers who were cutting their harmonic teeth on east coast streetcorners before these guys were born, make no mistake-Quiet Storm can sing leads, deep, honey-smooth basslines and harmonize their butts off. And if you'll listen to the title tune, one of our favorite Doo-Wop chestnuts, you'll notice that it has a fresh new arrangement! Next, listen to the spoken material in "Farewell My Love," written by Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr.; and then to the Bass lead in "Sixty Minute Man," and you'll realize that this is some of the most fun and entertaining Doo-Wop you've ever heard. Regency : Regency

Review: Five guys came out of the Somerset Housing Projects in Baltimore who sang anywhere and everywhere-at the Jack in the Box they were known as the Box Boys. That name changed to Regency, and with many collegiate music awards and some personnel changes later, the group tours over 300 universities and colleges a year. At 1 pm on June 27, 1994, Regency went into the recording studio to eat Philly steaks and fries, and to sing and sing some more. At 10 pm they had finished an incredible recording session, 21 songs completed a cappella without overdubs or studio trickery. Some favorites are a pair of Presley covers, "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog," Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti," The Righteous Bros' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," Sam Cooke's "Only Sixteen," James Brown's "I Got You," The Young Rascals' "Good Lovin'," "The Most Beautiful Girl In the World," the Isley Bros' "Shout," and "Day-O" (Banana Boat Song). This is the authentic street corner Doo Wop, with a bunch of guys who know each other as absolutely as they know the songs. This CD is a remarkable achievement and a real treat!

Reunion : So Much In Love

Review: Reunion is a solid East Coast a cappella doo-wop group who have now recorded their second record on Collectables Records. This one is different. They have a guest artist joining them. Willie Winfield is the legendary singer of the Harptones who enjoyed an illustrious recording and stage career in the fifties and sixties, and still are in demand on the oldies circuit. When Willie joins the members of Reunion a true singing spirit of the street corner is invoked. He sings lead on five of the eighteen tunes, 'On Sunday Afternoon,' 'My Memories Of You,' 'A Sunday Kind Of Love,' 'I Almost Lost My Mind' and 'That's The Way It Goes.' Reunion : Street Corner Singers

Review: Three-time UGHA winners Reunion - no other group has had that distinction - have been singing together in various incarnations since the 1960's. They also competed in and won the 'Acappella Showdown' in 1990 and 1991. This experience has resulted in a smooth fluid sound and crisp delivery; they avoid harshness. Their strong suit is the roundness and fullness of their tone. Their set list comprises the contemporary - Otis Redding's 'Drift Away' or Van Morrison's 'Brown Eyed Girl' - and the classic: the plaintive 'I Believe' and uptempo 'Where Are You Tonight?'
