Are you one of those people who get a kick out of it when someone blows stereotypes all out of the water? Good. So are we. And that's why we get such a thrill out of our women's contemporary groups; they challenge the stereotypes and throw them out on their ear, proving you don't need a Y chromosome to rock the house and deliver a ballad with a punch. Heck, you don't even need one for a floor-clearing bass line! Contemporary women's groups are holding their own with the men's groups out there; if you don't believe us, take a listen!

The Barden Bellas is an all-female a cappella group at Barden University (loosely inspired by "Divisi" an all-female a cappella group at the University of Oregon) in Georgia. Per tradition, they used to only perform songs made popular by women, before the modernizing change Beca Mitchell made to the group and the changes new Bella Emily Junk would make. Under Beca's leadership, the Bellas went on to win three ICCA championship titles in a row. As of 2015, the Bellas have also claimed the title of A Cappella World Champions following their victory in the championships held in Copenhagen.
Hailing from a range of musical backgrounds that includes both professional a cappella and musical theater, the women of Basic Pitch founded the group in 2015 not just as an outlet for their mutual passion for singing, but to build a collective of strong women who share a love of music. We've taken our fun and boisterous live show to classic New York venues like the Bitter End, The Delancey, and Arlene's Grocery, and our diverse roster of songs includes covers by everyone from Stevie Nicks, to Kendrick Lamar, to the Spice Girls. Our name is basic; our music is anything but.
Quietly and gently, informally and gradually, Black Voices was nurtured under the directorship of Carol Pemberton and Bob Ramdhanie. Since 1987, these two friends have steered Black Voices into one of the most solid performance and teaching companies, sharing a cappella, primarily from Africa but also throughout the Diaspora. The company is inspired by Sweet Honey in the Rock, Mahalia Jackson and Take Six, to name but a few, but since inception, has forged its own dynamic way of distilling and re-presenting black music from a Caribbean, black British perspective. Grounded in the black church, the group began presenting a cappella, both sacred and secular, which was always challenging and entertaining. From gospel to spirituals, Caribbean to African, jazz and blues, Black Voices is firmly rooted in music that energises and uplifts, challenges and educates. The company hosted and presented its own a cappella series with BBC Radio 2, has performed for radio and television in numerous countries around the world, has produced nine CDs, and has researched, produced, directed and performed in several international collaborations.

BroadBand is a Boston-area group dedicated to delivering a beautiful harmonic blend and an engaging a cappella performance experience for our audiences. We choose arrangements that are snazzy, melodic, unique. Our repertoire includes jazz, pop and contemporary styles of music.
It's part of our mission to make a cappella entertainment accessible for fundraisers, schools and other good causes. Singing is not a day job for any of the "Broads," so we make service to non-profits our performance priority. We are also very proud to have been selected to perform the National Anthem for the Boston Celtics (5 times and counting) and the Boston Red Sox.

As one of the longest-running a cappella groups in the Boston area, the Copley Cats are known for tight harmonies, amazing blend, and great music. The group's founders were Mount Holyoke grads who missed the great time they had singing in college and decided to form the Copley Cats. The original group's first gig was over 30 years ago and the music has been going strong since!
The Copley Cats have grown and evolved over time, but we always have a lot of fun. Members come from all sorts of backgrounds: teachers and administrators, librarians and marketers, designers, domestic engineers, and singer/songwriters. Regardless of our "day jobs," we enjoy getting together to sing.

HerStory: SongRise was conceived on a shuttle to the DC Metro when Sarah Beller and Laura Honeywood started harmonizing to Sweet Honey in the Rock's "Ella's Song" after a Social Justice Open Mic. For a few rocky months they met in the practice rooms of American University every week with a revolving cast of special guest appearances until a core group solidified and rehearsals moved to the Apiary in Columbia Heights. From the moment SongRise was conceived, we knew it had the potential to solidify our individual and collective dreams of merging art with action, song, soul and substance, community and chorus, and many other alliterative amalgamations.
