Roger Ames was born in Cooperstown, New York, the son of a self-taught church organist and first-grade teacher (his free pass to play the organ as a teenager). This and undoubtedly his mother's 42 years as a teacher helped define his passionate love for creating music as well as teaching and conducting it. He has written numerous large works, both sacred and secular. His Requiem for Our Time, using the poetry of Anne Sexton, has been performed both in the United States and abroad, and received its New England premiere by the Boston Chorus Pro Musica in November of 2007. It was recently nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Music. |

James Jordan, Roger Ames : Evoking Sound: The Choral Warm-Up Modal Exercises In response to the success of The Choral Warm-Up: Core Vocal Exercises, teachers and conductors have been requesting more exercises to expand the modal breadth of the series. Choir directors will find these exercises to be a key component in their quest to improve the musicianship and vocalism of their singers. Songlist: Aeolian Scale, Dorian Legato, Dorian Martellato, Dorian 4, Dorian Scale, Lydian 2, Lydian 3, Lydian 4, Lydian 5, Lydian Scale, Mixolydian, Mixolydian 4, Mixolydian Scale, Phrygian 1, Phrygian 2, Phrygian 2 Round, Phrygian 4, Phrygian Scale, Aeolian Range Extension, Dorian Range Extension, Lydian Range Extension, Mixolydian Range Extension, Phrygian Range Extension Roger Ames : Accompanied Model Canons for Choirs This addition to the successful Choral Warm-Up series provides one of the most important tools in teaching elements of choral intonation: canons. By singing canons, the ensemble can develop listening skills that revolve around "listening to everyone but themselves." These modal canons by Roger Ames extend that listening skill even further by adding harmonically supportive and enriching accompaniments. The Conductor's Edition provides teaching objectives and simple piano accompaniments for the eleven exercises. The introduction by James Jordan includes valuable information on how to use this material to begin musicianship training. The included companion CD contains the piano accompaniments only, providing great flexibility in using these exercises in both group rehearsal and individual study. Choir directors who want to improve the musicianship, vocal skills, and tuning of their singers will find these modal canons to be an outstanding addition to their library of warm-ups. Roger Ames is music director of the Composer Librettist Studio at New Dramatists (New York City); director of composition, theory, and vocal music at Great Neck North High School (New York); and music director of Pantomonium, Inc. (also in New York City). Songlist: Legato, High, forward singing in the lower register, Leaps, Register consistency, Upward leaps, Martellato, Learning to re-sing vowels, Central elements of diction, Shaping musical ideas, Maintaining a high second scale degree, Building round vocal sounds, Downward leaps, Exercises |

Composer: William Douglas
A serious choral work for women's chorus, dedicated to the children of the victims of 9/11. After the second stanza, a chorale-like Kyrie eleison section is introduced and is then juxtaposed with the tune on stanza 3, sung by the mezzo-soprano soloist. The work continues to develop in skillful ways that crescendo through ff alleluias, eventually diminishing to a pp "Was lost, but now I'm found." Serious concert material.
This plea for Christ to come into our lives moves along with a fair amount of unison singing that nonetheless requires careful attention to phrasing and nuance. It expands into two parts in octaves (ST/AB), building into an SATB f then ff, finally tapering off into a four-part canon that fades into a ppp ending. A fairly easy piece that requires a disciplined choir.
