The "contemporary" umbrella is a wide one, encompassing Rock, Pop, R&B, Soul, plus those styles that simply defy description. Most a cappella fans, when they think of contemporary a cappella, think of men's groups. Well, those fans might well be wrong, because there are some kickin' women's groups out there that have to be heard to be believed! Singing both covers and originals, these women from around the world know how to rock out, deliver sultry tones, and generally put on an auditory show that is most definitely worth the listen.

Bjork : Medula

Review: Latin for "marrow," Medulla makes use of the human voice as its core instrument. Bjork, who has gradually reduced her dependence on the mechanical, has created an ethereal atmosphere. Combining her unique vocal timber and deeply creative writing style, this CD is incredibly heartfelt. Occasionally accompanied by synthesizer or piano, most of the musical support comes from choirs and other guest voices like Mike Patton of Faith No More and Tanya Tagaq, an Inuit throat-singer. The songs on this recording cover a wide range of feelings. In "Mouths Cradle," Bjork concludes, "I need a shelter to build an altar away from Osamas and Bushes," and she fronts a choir in a somber Icelandic song called "Vokuro," which means "Vigil." In some cases, there are no words, only visceral sounds giving commentary on their titles. This album also features the song "Oceania," which was written for the opening ceremonies of the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Fans of Bjork will certainly love this recording. New comers to her work will also find this to be a fascinating project.

Songlist: Pleasure Is All Mine, Show Me Forgiveness, Where Is the Line, Vokuro, Oll Birtan, Who Is It (Carry My Joy on the Left, Carry My Pain on the Right), Submarine, Desired Constellation, Oceania, Sonnets / Unrealities XI, Ancestors, Mouth's Cradle, Midvikudage, Triumph of a Heart

Calamity Jane : The Road Ahead

Review: The Janes take a collection of songs that Thirty-Something Girls Like-"I Can't Make You Love Me," "Woodstock" and "Like A Prayer" are just several, but they're all good-begin with carefully constructed arrangements and pour their seven voices in a thick layer over the top. Sometimes "all-girl" groups can lack ballast on the bottom end, but Calamity Jane-as their name implies-gets the job done, relying on a foundation of dense block chords and ground bass figures. These gals aren't striving for a delicate, girly sound, but demonstrate that they can more than hold their own in the male-dominated world of contemporary a cappella.

Songlist: Shaking The Tree, It's All In The Game, Walking On Broken Glass, I Can't Stand The Rain, I Can't Make You Love Me, You Gotta Be, Son Of A Preacher Man, I'll Be There, You're No Good, Woodstock, Best Of My Love, To Sir With Love, Take Me To The River, Constant Craving, Would I Lie To You?, Shed A Little Light, Like A Prayer

CHICKAdivas : Chick Us Out

Review: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada's 5-woman "a cappella chicks with swing and style!" quintet Chickadivas found each other in a "cosmic event" in 2002, and in their first five years together they've gone through 4 sopranos and 4 altos, and won the Northern Harmony 2003 a cappella competition. Christmas concerts around Alberta have been very successful, and a sold-out concert in March celebrated the release of "Chick Us Out!," their debut CD. 10 songs, with some nice Canadian folk tunes like "Feller from Fortune," "The Morning Dew," "She's Like the Swallow," and the silly, sexy "The Log Driver's Waltz;" vintage rock classics like "Under the Boardwalk," "Lollipop" and B.E. King's "Stand By Me," the Swing anthem "Mr. Sandman," and, incongruously, the Eurythmics' hit, "Sweet Dreams." The Chickadivas have a fresh, innocent sound and obviously love what they're doing. "Chick Us Out" marks a promising beginning for one of Canada's best new a cappella groups!

Songlist: Under the Boardwalk, Feller From Fortune, The Morning Dw, Sweet Dreams, Mr Sandman, Hard Times, Stand By Me, She's Like The Swallow, Lollipop, The Log Driver's Waltz, Frequent Listener Reward Track

Copley Cats : Landing On Our Feet out of print

Review: An eleven member women's ensemble hailing from the Boston area who met while singing in college, the group could be loosely classified as contemporary, but also sing classic pop ("Walk on By") and jazz standards ("Satin Doll" and "Night and Day"). Several of their songs were arranged by Deke Sharon, including "Time and Tide," and "Passionate Kisses." A variety of members take turns on lead, and are consistently and solidly supported by this sorority of voices;

Songlist: Passionate Kisses, Song For The Asking, Time And Tide, American Tune, Is That The Way You Look?, Mary Don't You Weep, Night and Day, Satin Doll, Until You Come Back To Me, Walk On By, The Sound Of Music, Heart's Desire, Final Frontier

Harmonytryx : Fine Whine out of print

Review: "Diva-licious" is Harmonytryx' (Har-mo-NEE-trix) apt word to describe themselves. We would call these six beautiful women from New York a breath of fresh air, and they are causing a major buzz in the a cappella world! Self-managed and independent, these six women entertain audiences with an eclectic mix of pop, folk and world music that ranges from sexy and provocative to soulful and spiritual. Their unique combination of tightly-crafted vocal harmonies, powerful solos, funky vocal percussion and lively humor has captivated audiences throughout the NYC metropolitan area and beyond. There are 11 tunes here, "Ladies' Night," "O Sifuni Mungu," "His Mother's Legacy," "Sunday Morning, Yellow Sky," "Train in Vain" (featuring vocal percussion by Wes Carroll of the House Jacks), "Fear from Paradise," "Another Train," "For Each Day," "Homeless," "Testosterone" and "Freedom." Every song is beautifully crafted and performed with spirit and panache. We're not surprised to see on their website that they've been opening for Rockapella. "Fine whine" is a huge first CD and Harmonytrix is going places!

Songlist: Ladies' Night, O Sifuni Mungu, His Mother's Legacy, Sunday Morning, Yellow Sky, Train in Vain, Fear from Paradise, Another Train, For Each Day, Homeless, Testosterone, Freedom

Iris : Love Cafe out of print

Review: "Iris" are five women from Colorado, who perform a mixture of original and traditional material in the contemporary folk vein. The nature of existence, ephemeral yet everlasting, is the subject of the first cut, "All Things Are Connected"; the repetitive refrain drives the message home. The urgency of the bass motif fuels "Sweet Guru Child," the unison harmony of "Calling Me Open," (an original) gently flavors the melody with an honest sobriety of centuries past. Several tracks have subtle percussion, some of it vocal, adding energy and momentum. Iris' sound is tight and tuneful, and their songwriting and repertoire is eclectic without becoming obscure.

Songlist: All Things Are Connected, Sweet Guru Child, Calling Me Open, Resurrection, The Road Not Taken, Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair, Bonny Portmore, c, Love Cafe, Something Out Their, Salty Fish

Key Of She : In The Key Of She out of print

Review: Now in its fourth year together, New-Jersey-based all-female jazz sextet Key of She bring us a poised, confident 2nd CD (their first, the excellent "Our First Time"). Strong vocal percussion, shared solo duties and sheer vocal talent give this group a rare full, rich sound that was not lost on the audience and judges at the 2002 New York Harmony Sweeps Regional, where they were awarded 2nd place and Audience Favorite. After that they opened for the late Ray Charles, and appeared on the national Jane Pauley show. There are 12 songs, in genres that vary from jazz and salsa to pop classics. A sexy, rhythmic cover of "Something to Talk About," "In These Shoes" is a hilarious send-up of the whole Romance Novel mindset; and the jazz classic "Fever" has some surprising, refreshing vocal sampling. Sting's "Every Little Thing (He) Does Is Magic," is, in fact, magic. Del Shannon's pop classic "Runaway" has a hot, funky arrangement and a sweet lead, the eternal question "Why Haven't I Heard From You," the Gershwins' classic "S'Wonderful," a bluenote cover of "S'Wonderful," Fleetwood Mac's "Warm Ways," David Cassidy's "I Think I Love You," and the funny "Bald Headed Men" top off the program. Key of She has a bunches of vocal talent, humor and joy of singing, and it adds up to a winning, highly entertaining CD!

Songlist: Spider web, Something To Talk About, In These Shoes, Change The World, Fever, Every Little Thing He Does Is Magic, Runaway, Why Haven't I Heard From You?, S'Wonderful, Warm Ways, I Think I Love You, Bald Headed Men

Key of She : Our First Time out of print

Review: Only 15 months old as a group, Key of She's six women singers are anything but shy about jumping into the a cappella scene! "Our First Time" is their self-produced debut, limited-run CD, and if it lacks at all in studio polish, it more than makes it up in spirit and the group's sheer love of singing a cappella together. Recorded in January, 2002 in Sue's Studio,Skillman, New Jersey, this CD is one of the things we most enjoy about a cappella--the fact that Patty, Lisa, Pat, Sue, Dyann & Amy can practice and put a repertoire together, do some gigs, create some fans who ask for a CD to take home, rent some studio time, and produce a very special, beautifully arranged group of songs. Included are Van Morrison's "Moondance," Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin," Shania Twain's "Honey, I'm Home,"Leon Russell's "This Masquerade," the very funny feminist hymn "Ah! Men,"Sara McLachlan's "Angel," Jonathan Larson's "Seasons of Love," "I Feel Lucky" and "Wide Open Spaces." This is a fun CD, especially for everyone who has ever dreamed of doing exactly what Key of She has done here!

Songlist: Moondance, I've Got You Under My Skin, Honey, I'm Home, This masquerade, Ah! Men, Angel, Seasons of Love, I Feel Lucky, Wide Open Spaces

Mary Schmary : Hidden Agenda Items

Review: Purported, by the Schmaries themselves, to be the last hurrah after a nine year lifespan, "Hidden Agenda Items" careens into infinity with brash outrageousness. Originals, such as "Ecclesiasticus 31:1" and "Bug Girl," are stars in their own unique musical galaxy, one that perhaps hasn't been identified yet! With zest and humor ("Classic Rock/La Cucaracha"), they fuse elements of the blues, world, and plainchant; the Bobs come to mind as their spiritual counterparts. By the way, did we mention that the Schmaries are women (two basses, two altos/sopranos), but discard previously held notions about "girl a cappella groups"; they don't apply here. "Hidden Agenda Items" is a fiery ascent into the outer limits!

Songlist: Gooberoni, Abraham on the Bay Bridge, Babar the King, Bug Girl, Ecclesiasticus 31:1, The Koala Incident, More Than Human, Don't Buy Anything, La Cucaracha, Where Am I, I'll Take You There, Get Up & Jam, Already Gone, Sam & Roz, If I Had a Hamster

Mary Schmary : Smarty Pants

Review: Four incredibly smart women have combined their musical abilities to write and create some of the cleverest, thought provoking, and humorous tunes available. For humor, check out "I Put You There" and "Little Fish." The politically inspired, classical sounding "Uterus" is a no nonsense getoutofmyface tune. All in all the thought provoking reflections are leavened by a collective intellect seldom encountered in in a field so frequently thought of as "merely entertainment." If you are willing to be harmonized into thinking differently than you do now, this is for you!

Songlist: Shadows, Never Will, I Put You There, Uterus, Who Are You, Peace, Little Fish, Human Bean, More Than Human, Kicking Stones, Inmigrantes, Already Gone

Metropolitones : Time For a Breakdown onsale

Review: "Time for a Breakdown" is the second full-size album (they also have released a pair of nice sampler CDs) of New York City's premier Seven Sisters a cappella group, which refers to seven elite womens' universities and colleges. Five of the eight current members graduated from Vassar, two from Wellesley and one from Mount Holyoke. The group was a 2009 contestant on NBC and Sony's "The Sing Off," which was inspired by the Harmony Sweepstakes. The MetropoliTones bring us 13 sweet-sounding covers, some favorites are the En Vogue hit "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)," Paula Cole's "The Ladder," Az Yet's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry," Razorlight's "Golden Touch," Rascal Flatts' "Life Is A Highway," KT Tunstall's "Black Horse & The Cherry Tree," Camille's "Ta Douleur," John Lennon's "Imagine," Bill Withers' "Lean on Me" and the Wailin Jennys poignant traditional tune "The Parting Glass." The group has a killer live show, and an audience-pleasing sound with rich harmonies and beautiful leads. We enjoyed every cut of "Time for a Breakdown," and think you'll love this young, fast-rising, talented all-woman ensemble!

Songlist: My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It), The Ladder, The Remedy, Hard To Say I'm Sorry, Golden Touch, Life Is A Highway, Refuge (When It's Cold Outside), Black Horse & The Cherry Tree, Lie Still Little Bottle, Ta Douleur, Imagine, Lean On Me, The Parting Glass

Moira Smiley and VOCO : Circle Square Diamond and Flag onsale

Review: Moira, Jessica B., Jessica C. and Christine pulled off their unexpected win at the 2007 Harmony Sweeps Finals in San Rafael by digging into old Americana and Eastern European roots. The live, eight-song EP "circle square diamond and flag" includes some songs from that magic night, "Carolina Pines," and "Bring Me Little Water, Silvie." The remaining songs are all "Shape Note" hymns, which flourished in late 18th century-early 19th century New England, where hymn books would fill with these uniquely modal, contrapuntal songs. "Garden Hymn" is a traditional Shape Note song, as are "Parting Friends" and "Wondrous Love." "Return My Soul," written and composed by Moira, the traditional Appalachian song "The Cuckoo" and Wm. Billings' "Africa" round out the songlist. A beautiful, touching collection from Moira and VOCO!

Moira Smiley and VOCO : Small Worlds

Review: We loved watching Moira and VOCO, her talented partners, pull off their surprising win at the 2007 Harmony Sweeps Finals in San Rafael, CA, especially their introduction of "body percussion to augment their sweet a cappella harmonies. "Small Worlds" is a "physical theater" of four voices, cello, violin, accordion, banjo and body percussion on 10 "post-folk" songs, guided by Bela Bartok. Some of our favorites are: "Izgrejala," "Makedonska," "Silverlake," "Summer Has Come," "Russia" (Siberia's Snows), "Out of a Child" and "The Hat-Matchmaking Song." Haunting, beautiful, powerful and mysterious songs from Moira, Jessica B., Jessica C. and Christine!

Songlist: Zelena (Green Mikrokosmos), Izgrejala (Gel Mama)/Tk Mi Kazaha, Makedonska, Summer Has Come, Silverlake, Szerelem, Russia (Siberia's Snows), Out Of A Child, The Hat - Matchmaking Song, Rano (Early Morn' Mikrokosmos)

Petra Haden : Petra Goes To The Movies out of print

Review: Stunning a cappella renditions of classic movie themes from Psycho to Taxi Driver to The Social Network. A one of a kind opportunity to experience some cinematic soundtracks in an extraordinary new way. Epic and evocative scores have been ingeniously recreated utilizing layers of remarkably inventive vocals. Far from a mere novelty, these interpretations retain every bit of emotional resonance and inspirational might as the originals.

Songlist: Rebel Without A Cause, God's Lonely Man, Cool Hand Luke, Cinema Paradiso, A Fistful Of Dollars Theme, Psycho Main Title, Goldfinger, Carlotta's Galop, It Might Be You, The Planet Krypton, Superman Theme, My Bodyguard, Pascal's Walt, Calling You, Hand Covers Bruise, This Is Not America

Petra Haden : Sings The Who Sell Out onsale

Review: One of the triplet daughters jazz bassist legend Charlie Haden, Petra grew up in a world of music, developing at a young age the ability to perfectly mimic the sounds of instruments she was hearing around the house. She developed complex arrangements in her head and could interpret all kinds of songs. The idea for "The Who Sell Out" came from her friend, bassist Mike Watt, who suggested that she attempt to re-imagine this classic Who album as an a cappella tour de force. He gave her an 8 track cassette tape with the Who album recorded onto one track and the other 7 empty, for her to fill with intricate vocal harmonies reinventing not only all the Who's instrumental parts, including drums and even the mock radio commercials so integral to the original lp. The final result is a technical tour-de-force that highlights the Who's own achievement while showing off the brilliant vocal talents and fresh point of view of Petra. 13 songs: "Armenia City In The Sky," "Heinz Baked Beans," "Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand," "Odorano," "Tattoo," "Our Love Was," "I Can See For Miles," "I Can't Reach You," "Medac," "Relax," "Silas Stingy," "Sunrise" and "Rael." Who needs a band when you have the vocal chops (and the 8-track recorder) to re-interpret a classic lp and turn it into an instant a cappella hit that Pete Townsend called "exquisite?" Who fans, Petra fans and those interested in pushing the a cappella envelope will want to listen to what Petra Haden has created here!

Songlist: Armenia City In The Sky, Heinz Baked Beans, Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand, Ordorono, Tattoo, Our Love Was, I Can See For Miles, I Can't Reach You, Medac, Relax, Silas Stingy, Sunrise, Rael

Stella : Different Skies onsale

Review: Different Skies is the second release from 7-woman Durham, NC-based a cappella group Stella, the first being the excellent "Gimme Stella." This is a sumptuous, gorgeous collection of 15 tunes, some of which are lightly accompanied by bass, guitar and even a Moroccan riq on the lovely opening cut, "Before This Time Another Year." These 7 women share a love of good stories, eclectic tastes and music from different cultures. Two originals, "Cave Ranger," which reflects on the sexy possibilities of a date with a cave ranger, and "Teenage Girls.," tells the tragic tale of the death of a beloved teenage friend, are marvelous. Other favorites are the sweetly rhythmic "Be Mine (Little Baby)," "Satellites," "My Babe," "I'll Never Leave You Baby," the bluesy "Blue and Lonesome," the stark anti-war song "No More To The Dance," shape-note tune "Wondrous Love," "Shto Si Goro," a gospel tune from the Georgia Sea Islands, the powerful "Kappee," a Finnish folk tale, the poignant ballad "Teenage Girls" and the wonderful American shape note song, "Long Time Traveller." Since first getting together in 1998 to harmonize favorite tunes with each other, the group took the name Stella in 2000 and began to perform publicly in venues such as the NC Museum of Art, Festival for the Eno, Artsplosure, Light Up Durham and Black Mountain, NC's LEAF Festival. Possibly because of this, their sound as a group has taken a huge leap forward-every cut on "Different Skies" is a richly harmonic delight!

Songlist: Before This Time Another Year, Be Mine (Little Baby), Satellites, Northern Cross, My Babe, Cave Ranger, I'll Never Leave You Baby, Blue And Lonesome, Wondrous Love, Shto Si Goro, No More To The Dance, Stretched On Your Grave, Kappee, Teenage Girls, Long Time Traveller

Trio Esperanca : A Capela Do Brasil

Review: Again, another CD only available as an import, this Brazilian female Trio (accompanied by special guests) sings, we would presume, in Portugese, though it seems that at least one of the tracks is in Spanish, and "La Vie En Rose" is in French. Cosmopolitan, no? Employing reknowned Brazilian musicians and songwriters such as Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins and Djavan (who also worked with the Manhattan Transfer on their "Brasil" CD), their sound melds adult contemporary pop and jazz. Occasionally accompanied ("Coisa Feita" has flamenco guitar, as an example), many of the nineteen songs are uptempo; when the pace slows, as it does on "Rua Ramalhate," with its reverberated vocal sound and dynamic shifts, the momentum only increases. Their intonation and blend is tight and in-the-pocket, without a hair out of place. This Trio will add a welcome zest to your collection.

Songlist: Aquarela do Brasil, Casaco Marrom, O Pato, Qualquer Coisa, Aquele Um, La Vie En Rose, Corcovado, Coisa Feita, Comecar de Novo, De Passagem, Gold Heranca, Watashi (sapporo 76), Rua Ramalhete, Expresso 2222, O Que Sera ( a Flor da pele), Conversa de Botequim, Toada, San Vicente, Deixa Isso Pra La

Trio Esperanca : Preferidas

Review: Like finding a twenty in the pocket of the pastel jacket we last wore to Mardi Gras, this 4th CD from the unforgettable trio of Brazilian beauties is a welcome, unexpected, Latin-flavored joy! For three women who look so good, and so happy, in the pix in the liner notes to be blessed with their almost surreal voices and perfect intonation seems almost too much. We were blown away by their previous three CDs, and "Preferidas" is a "best of" CD, the only three titles not on the previous three being "Carinhoso," "Garota de Ipanema" and "La Femme," sung as a "duo avec Michel Fugain" (the liner notes are lovely, but all in Portuguese). Fair enough, but how would you pick the songs to leave out? There are 17 songs here, most in Portuguese; and your occasional tune in Spanish or French, like the amazing "La Vie en Rose," and "Watashi," sung in tight, perfect Japanese. A few songs are accompanied, like "Que Nem Gilo," which features a marvelous salsa band. Included are "Berimbau," "A Felicidade," "Aguas de Marco," one of our favorites, "Garota de Ipanema" (Girl from Ipanema), the accompanied French love song "O Femme"...listen, you just have to put this in the boombox, lie back and slap some headphones on, or put it in the really good sound system in your car and go for a long drive in the country. If you don't believe your ears, hit replay! Highly recommended.

Songlist: Aquarela do Brasil, O Pato, La Vie en Rose, Corcovado, Que Nem Gilo, Rua Ramalhete, Lanca Perfume, Carinhoso, Watashi, Aquas de Marco, O Femme (En Duo Avec Michel Fugain), Garota de Ipanema, Berimbau, A Felicidade, Agua de Beber, To Nem Ligando, De Passagem

Trio Esperanca : Segundo

Review: Can we possibly stand more wonderful music from the three Brazilian sirens who call themselves Trio Esperanca? Segundo, we believe, means "Second", and as there are two excellent CDs already gracing our catalog, perhaps this one was released out of order. 17 songs, most sung in Portuguese, at least one, "Mar e Lua," in Spanish, one in French ("La Lune est Morte," and one, amazingly, in English, Stevie Wonder's lovely "Come Back as a Flower." There is some light percussion, piano and guitar accompaniment on a few songs, but they only add to the enjoyment. We have never heard such perfect intonation-these women truly sing as one, and their one song in (perfect) English left us breathless. Our second favorite is "Garote de Ipanema," "The Girl from Ipanema" in Portuguese-incredible. Too much good stuff. Import.

Songlist: Noitre, Lanca Perfume, Aguas de Marco, To Nem Ligando, Come Back as a Flower, Ponto de Macumba, Garota de I, Panema, Sebastiana, Mar e Lua, Samba de Uma Nota, So, La Lune est Morte, A Felicidade, Pra La, Pra Ca, Na Baixa do Sapateiro, Ponto de Macumba, Isso e Brasil, Rua Augusta

Voces : A Nuestros Padres out of print

Review: Cuba has been sharing it's culture and traditions recently with the world at large by exporting a cappella music as part of its rich musical heritage. In Voces Mirtha Millan is the music director and arranger of most of the songs which are sung by six women. Heard for the first time are elements of vocal percussion performed by women somewhat reminiscent of Vocal Sampling. Ballads abound on this recording which is spiced with both jazzy and more classical sounding arrangements. The most familiar tunes are "Cómo Fue" and "Guantanamera." Several of the tunes are accompanies by guitar and a bit of percussion.

Songlist: Tratenis de robatnos la ternura, Como fue, Ojos malignos, Capullito do aleli, Llora llora, Al fin amor, Fuga campesina, Cumbanchero, El amor de me boleo, Olvido, El manisero, La perla marina, Guantanamera, Week, Mi tierra, Negro bembon

Wo'Xang : One onsale

Review: Ines, Nicole, Sylvia and Marina are members of the fast-rising new Austrian a cappella quartet WO'xang, and One is, appropriately enough, their first release. These talented, beautiful young women have a fresh, avant-garde sound with elements of Folk, Jazz, Pop, and Choral with many original arrangements, compositions and lyrics that catch and hold our attention. Favorites are "Sweet Temptation," with lyrics by Nicole added to a Venezuelan traditional melody (with some non-vocal percussion); "Sunday," "I don't know" and "Just for Yourself," with music and lyrics by Marina, the powerful "Black Dog" and "Tickles" by Nicole Weiser; and "Supervibe" with music and lyrics by Sylvia. Strong covers of Judie Tzuke's "For You," Tori Amos' "Leather," Joni Mitchell's "Shadows and Light" and George Michaels' "Father Figure" mesh perfectly with the original material. The final cut, "Kyrie," joins the music of Marina with Nicole's lyrics, and is guitar accompanied. All songs are in English. Beautiful voices that stand alone and harmonize effortlessly, wonderful, provocative lyrics-"One" impresses and moves us in so many ways-one of the best debut CDs of the year!

Songlist: Sweet Temptation, Sunday, For You, Black Dog, Supervibe, Leather, Tickles, I Don't Know, Shadows and Light, Just for Yourself, Father Figure, Kyrie

Sirens : PreMusical Syndrome onsale

Review: Not to be confused with the Collegiate ensemble USC Sirens, The Sirens were formed in New York City in the Fall of 2000, and are a Contemporary a cappella all-woman septet. "PreMusical Syndrome" is their debut CD, and it's an excellent one. 8 all-a cappella cover tunes, beginning with George Michael's "Freedom 90," Lenny Kravitz' "Fly Away," Radiohead's "High and Dry" and Amanda Marshall's "Sunday Morning After." Other winners are U2's "Pride," Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling" and a very nice "TV Medley" that pushes a bunch of our nostalgia buttons. The Sirens have a fresh, clean, fun sound, we enjoyed every of "Syndrome" and we're looking forward to hearing more.

Songlist: Freedom 90, Fly Away, High & Dry, Love Will Keep Us Together, Sunday Morning After, Hooked on a Feeling, Pride (In the Name of Love), TV Medley

Review: Would you believe a song in which the entire lyric is made up of 24 rock and roll song titles from the 50's and 60's?? Only Jay Althouse could have written this one. Opens with a brief speech choir section to set the rockin' mood, and then the hits just keep on rollin'! 'The Leader of the Pack came with Peggy Sue; Good Golly, Miss Molly was even there too.' The staging possibilities are endless.
