Bela Bartok : Five Slovak Folksongs "Many people think it is a comparatively easy task to write a composition on found folk tunes... This way of thinking is completely erroneous. To handle folk tunes is one of the most difficult tasks; equally difficult, if not more so, than to write a major original composition. If we keep in mind that borrowing a tune means being bound by its individual peculiarity, we shall understand one part of the difficulty. Another is created by the special character of folk tune. We must penetrate it, feel it, and bring out its sharp contours by the appropriate setting... It must be a work of inspiration just as much as any other composition." - Bela Bartok. Includes English text. Bela Bartok : Shepherd's Christmas Songs Arranged for unaccompanied mixed voices by Paul Arma with English text by Eric Smith these pieces are from "Melodien der Rumanischen Colinda". Penderecki employs four stanzas of the traditional verse attributed to Hrabanus Maurus, and assigns varying numbers of voices within the four overlapping standard ranges (SATB) so that the density of the choral sound is also modulating throughout the piece which proves to be a particularly effective device for creating musical imagery. Kzysztof Penderecki : Agnus Dei Veni Creator, for a cappella choir, was conducted by Penderecki himself when he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Madrid in April 1987. Songlist: Joyful, Joyful, Oh Happy Day, Africa, September, Boogie Wonderland, Just The Way You Are, Rosanna, True Colors, In The Stone Peter Eotvos : Herbsttag This six-minute madrigal setting was commissioned by the renowned Hanover Girls' Choir and composed on the basis of one of Rainer Maria Rilke's profound poems. It begins as a thanksgiving prayer: for the summer, for the autumn fruits. But the first winds bring along the fear of the cold and loneliness of winter: 'Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time, will stay up, read, write long letters". Eotvos lets the poem unfold twice, each time in a different way, thus intensifying the reflection. The tonality is treated freely, and the choral setting extends the underlying five-part texture, in which the choir's soloists create striking echoes, up to eight-part passages. Tina Harrington : Two Serbian Folks Songs Selected for the Ron Kean multicultural series, these Serbian folk songs have been tastefully arranged by educator, Tina Harrington. Although these pieces can be performed alone, it is actually a partner with "Sano Duso." "Ajde Jano" is a playful love song that frolics and skips as its text celebrates dancing and singing. Even as the music shifts from F minor to major and back again, the ethnic modality transports you to Serbia. A more tender love song than its partner piece, they program perfectly together. Songlist: Sano Duso, Ajde Jano Various Arrangers : Music from the Republic of Georgia for Male Voices Tskhenosnuri is one of the most performed and popular Georgian folk songs, and has been recorded in different versions by the best-known folk choirs. Much of the text consists of nonsense syllables - think of them as the Georgian version of "fa la la. "Khatelishvili (1932-1988) wrote Khorumi in 1964. It is based on a unique 5/4 Adzharian folk dance rhythm and some melodic fragments which were common in the folk dance music of the Georgian province of Adzharia. This edition presents the piece in its original form. The text is a "Naduri" is a working song from the Imereti region in western Georgia; calls for unique Georgian yodeling technique known as krimanchuli. Songlist: Tskhenosnuri, Naduri, Khorumi, Dachrilis Simghera Various Arrangers : Musica Sacra Hungarica The choir book Musica Sacra Hungarica provides a survey of the broad spectrum of sacred vocal music produced in Hungary during the 20th century. Following on from the romantic heritage an individual Hungarian vocal style was developed, which became known internationally through the sacred and secular vocal works of Bela Bartok, Zoltan Kodaly and Lajos Bardos. Songlist: Abendlied, Aeterne Rex, Adoramus te, Ad te Domine levavi, Ave Maria, Ave Maria, Ave maris stella, Ave verum corpus, Cantate Domino, Crucifigatur, Da das Pascha Nahte, De profundis, Deus tu convertens, Dextera Domini, Dicunt omnes, Dunkelheit umfangt uns, Eli, Eli, Et circa horam nonam, Exsurge, Hodie Christus natus est, Jesu Dulcis memoira, Jesus und die Kramer, Jubilate Deo, Kyrie, Kyrie in D, Laudate Dominum, Libera me, Magnificat, O crux ave, O gloriosa virginum, and more Various Arrangers : Georgian Folk Songs Vol 1 The history of Georgian music is primarily that of folk song. Polyphonic singing has always had its place in Georgian social life. Genres include hunting songs, labor songs, ritual songs, laments, love songs, wedding songs, marching songs, and historical ballads. This unique collection of ten traditional three-part folk songs from the Caucasus Republic of Georgia provides a broad sampling of these genres, from several of Georgia's distinct regions. Songlist: Alilo, Aralo, Ch'ich'e T'ura, Didavoi Nana, Gonja, Kash Kruli, Mival Guriashi, Odoia-naduri, Tskhenosnuri Various Arrangers : Georgian Sacred Chorales Georgia has one of the world's most ancient polyphonic singing traditions. Polyphony refers to music where each vocal line is equally important, sharing the melody among them; (as opposed to homophony, in which melodic interest is concentrated in a single line). The singing tradition in the Caucasus is unique in its harmonic and -- especially in western Georgia -- its extreme polyphonic approach. Many songs have distinct archaic traits dating from pre-Christian times, and in most traditional music the intervals are flexible and do not coincide with tempered scale intervals (with the exception of the fifth). The harmonies are unlike anything in European music, with untempered intervals and striking harmonic convergences. Songlist: Ats Qovliturt Aghivso, Da Vitartsa Meupisa, Ghmerti Upali, Jvarsa Shensa, Kriste Aghsdga, Motsikuli Kristes'agan, Movedit Da Vsvat, Romenlni Kerubinta, Shen Khar Venakhi, Tsmindao Ghmerto Various Arrangers : Traditional Songs of the Balkans Includes 29 traditional Balkan village songs from Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria. With full musical transcriptions, translations and pronunciation guide. Mostly transcribed from village sources; but also included are a few Kutev and Lado arrangements. Songs for women's voices as well as for mixed voices. Twenty-three of these songs are recorded on the companion Village Harmony album. Songlist: Ajde Cure Kolo Da Vodimo, Alaj Alaj Jano, Smiljem Gora Oobrascena, Crven Fesic, Cvice Moje, Divojka Je Mileduv Brala, Ej Zito Zela, Tri Jetrve, Letovanic, Majka Maru, Maramica Na Stazi, Cija Li Je Taraba, Oj Djevojko, Oj Livado Rosna Travo, Slavonska Poskocica, Oj Savice, Tri Curice Zito Zele, Zapevala Sojka Ptica, Zora Se Bjeli, Podravina Wedding Suite, Eleno, More Sokol Pie, Ladom Se Goro Zalade, Majka Rada, Ozdolu Idu, Trgnala E MAlka Moma, Nikolo Le Nikolcho Le Various Arrangers : Eastern European Folk Songs Lajos Bardos' Hungarian composition, 'Erik A Som,' has easy melodies and harmonies, the challenge comes with the text, as the Hungarian language is a bit more difficult, than others, to learn. Hungarian words are always accented on the first syllable. There are no diphthongs; if two vowels appear together, each is distinctly pronounced. A helpful guide to learn how to speak the text is included. 'Chindia,' is perhaps Pascanu's most famous composition. It is based on an instrumental Romanian folk dance by the same name. 'Chindian' besides being the name of a folk dance, refers both to the time of day just before the sun sets and to the place in the sky where the sun goes down. The dance is perfomed by both men and women in a closed circle, the dancer's arms on each other's shoulders. A vigorous dance, it uses small steps, and may include amusing, somewhat athletic stunts. This wordless piece is very exciting to sing! 'Sednalo e Djore dos' is based on a very famous Bulgarian folk tune that has circulated in the oral tradition of Bulgarian folk singers for many years. It is characterized by its short and repetitive melodic line flavored with a lot of humorous energy. In this arrangement, the arranger has paraphrased the melody slightly thus allowing it to become a good foundation for harmonic variations. Ivan Hrusovsky's 'Rytmus' has excellent, fun rhythms along with great (but relatively simple) harmonies. The latin text moves niceley with the melodies. Songlist: Rytmus, Sednalo e Djore dos, Chindia, Erik A Som (The Cherries Ripen) Zoltan Kodaly : Let Us Sing Correctly - 101 Exercises in Intonation Based on sol-fa notation combined with unaccompanied part singing from the earliest stages in a child's school music, the Kodaly Method develops musical literacy, secure intonation and rhythmic confidence - essential fundamentals of sound music education. The Kodaly Choral Method is a comprehensive series of progressive songs and sigh-singing exercises designed to promote a thorough understanding of interval and tonality. By incorporative a wide range of Hungarian folk music and poetry, Kodaly has produced a stimulating addition to the repertoire of school and amateur choirs. This collection contains 101 exercises in intonation, and serves as an introduction to the five volumes of two-part exercises Songlist: Let Us Sing Correctly, 101 Exercises in Intonation Zoltan Kodaly : 55 Two-Part Exercises The Kodaly Choral Concept is revised in an English Edition by Geoffry Russell-Smith. Composer: Powel Lukaszewski | Country: Poland
This piece for double choir (which has a companion Ave maris stella devised for separate performance) is grounded in traditional harmonic progression. An astonishing build-up of devotional intensity is achieved with near-exclusive reference to the notes of the G major diatonic scale. At the pinnacle of the piece an electrifying F natural is introduced, which, in combination with an A minor triad, replicates the climactic chord from the development section of the opening movement of Beethoven's 3rd (Eroica) Symphony. The Eroica chord has iconic status in Polish music, playing a major role in the final movement of Górecki's famed Symphony No. 3 (the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs).

Dudaryku (The Piper) was introduced to me by my friend Natalka Pavlovsky as 'the Ukrainian version of Der Leiermann' (The Organ Grinder). Like Schubert's famous Lied, this Ukrainian folksong hauntingly evokes the song of the town musician using the simple drone of his instrument. Dudaryku pays homage to the beloved piper who once played for the townspeople. Several factors coalesced to create Dudaryku. I considered the many traditions of folksongs in western music: the simple folksong without accompaniment; arrangements (like the 19th century arrangement of Dudaryku by Leontovich); and the composition of new work in a folk style (exemplified in works of Brahms and Stephen Foster). The intersection of these traditions - using the old, the borrowed, and the new - intrigued me Dudaryku begins with a newly composed setting of the folksong text which laments the loss of the treasured town musician. There is a transition, referencing Leon
