The British vocal ensemble VOCES8 is proud to inspire people through music and share the joy of singing. Touring globally, the group performs an extensive repertory both in its a cappella concerts and in collaborations with leading orchestras, conductors and soloists. Versatility and a celebration of diverse musical expression are central to the ensemble's performance and education ethos.
VOCES8 has performed at many notable venues including Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Elbphilharmonie, Cite de la Musique, Vienna Konzerthaus, Tokyo Opera City, NCPA Beijing, Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, Victoria Concert Hall Singapore and the Palacio de Bellas Artes Mexico City. This season they will add the Sydney Opera House, Muziekgebouw aan' t IJ and La Seine Musicale Paris to that list. Keen musical collaborators, this season will see concerts with the Academy of Ancient Music, Manchester Camerata, the Edvard Grieg Kor, Hugo Ticciati, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, and with Gramophone Magazine 'Artist of the Year 2018' baroque violinist Rachel Podger, with whom the critically acclaimed 'Guardian Angel' project will continue. Touring highlights of the season include concerts throughout the UK and Europe, across USA and Japan, and debut visits to Australia and Lithuania.
With an on-going programme of recordings, videos and live broadcasts, VOCES8 is heard regularly on international television and radio. The ensemble is a Decca Classics artist and has released acclaimed recordings that have all reached the top of the classical charts. A new album is planned for 2019. VOCES8 has premiered commissions from Roxanna Panufnik, Alexander Levine, Alec Roth, Ben Parry, Ola Gjeilo, Philip Stopford, Graham Lack, Thomas Hewitt Jones and Owain Park. 2019 will see the premiere of a commission by Jonathan Dove to mark the culmination of his period as the group's Composer in Residence.
VOCES8 is passionate about music education and is the flagship ensemble of the music charity VCM Foundation. Engaging in a broad range of outreach work that reaches up to 40,000 people a year, the group runs an annual programme of workshops and masterclasses at the Foundation's home in London, the Gresham Centre at St Anne & St Agnes Church. Dedicated to supporting promising young singers, the group awards eight annual choral scholarships through the VOCES8 Scholars initiative. These scholarships are linked to the annual Milton Abbey Summer School at which amateur singers of all ages are invited to work and perform with VOCES8. The ensemble is proud to be the Associate Ensemble for Cambridge University and delivers a Masters programme in choral studies.
As official Ambassadors for Edition Peters, the ensemble publishes educational material including the 'VOCES8 Method'. Developed by Paul Smith, co-founder of VOCES8, this renowned and unique teaching tool is available in four languages and adopts music to enhance development in numeracy, literacy and linguistics. Also available are two anthologies of its arrangements, and an ever-expanding 'VOCES8 Singles' range. This season the ensemble becomes Ambassador for the Tido App, an inspirational resource and learning tool. The VOCES8 Method and music arrangements will be made available on the Tido platform during the 2018/19 season.

Jim Clements : Cheek to Cheek The classic Irving Berlin tune that was sung by Fred Astaire in the movie Top Hat, here in a 3-minute arrangement by Jim Clements for unaccompanied SSAATTBB. A wistful start leads to an effortless swing arrangement over a walking bass. From VOCES8 arranger-in-residence Jim Clements, who helped create the distinctive jazz sound of VOCES8.
Voces8 : Pyramid Song A sublime and otherworldly 4.5-minute arrangement by Geoff Lawson of the iconic 2001 song by the British rock band Radiohead. Arranged for SATB (with divisi) and piano (with an option for strings and harp replacing piano). Flowing and mysterious, tranquil yet pensive, Pyramid Song is both simple and complex and endlessly fascinating. Geoff Lawson is an arranger and orchestrator who frequently works with VOCES8 on arrangements for their albums.
Voces8 : Sway A fantastic arrangement by Alexander L'Estrange of Luis Demetrio and Pablo Beltran Ruiz's classic piece that makes for an entertaining stage performance piece. Arranged for unaccompanied SSAATTBB, this 4-minute sultry Latin groove is perfect for dance-themed or jazz programming. Alexander L'Estrange is a multi-faceted composer, arranger, jazz musician and choral animateur who has been dubbed 'the added 9th of choral music'.
Voces8 : A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square A gorgeous unaccompanied SSAATTBB arrangement of Manning Sherwin's classic song, surely one of the most famous melodies from the 1930s. Written to be performed at leisurely pace with indulgent harmonies, and 3.5 minutes in length. |

This piece was written for the choir of Worcester Cathedral during the time that Jim sang there as a lay clerk, and was first performed during the annual Advent Carol service in December, 2007.

This vocal arrangement of the classic Schubert song by Jim Clements for VOCES8 tells the terrifying tale of a young boy and his father being chased by the Erl King. Each voice has a chance to inhabit the characters from the story, while Schubert's original piano part is brought to life by the other voices.

This 5 minute arrangement by Emily Dickens for VOCES8 draws together a pair of stunningly emotive melodic lines from the Scottish and Irish folk traditions: My Lagan Love and She Moved Through the Fair. The lower voices create a drone on which the tenor and upper voices explore the beautifully simple and instantly recognisable harmonies of these folk songs.

This arrangement of the well-known Basque carol was among the first to be written for us by our Arranger-in-Residence, Jim Clements. Mixing sonorous choral chords with soft accompanying lines, this setting finds both the glory and humility of the Angel's appearance to the Virgin. Such is the popularity of the arrangement that it has always formed an important part of the group's seasonal programming and is recorded on ouralbum, 'Christmas'.

This beautiful folk song was commissioned as part of our fifth anniversary celebrations in 2012, and was included in our EP 'In the Beginning' and on our US concert tour. It has always been a fun challenge to perform, with gorgeous flowing lines and a great opening solo for the bass. Our annual visit to sing for friends in the Shenandoah Valley is never complete without a rendition of this arrangement; performing it at Abbey Road Studios was also an unforgettable experience.

The composer's poem is based on the early 15th Century Middle English carol 'This Endris Night', that is cast as a discourse between Mary and the infant Jesus, where her lament alternates with his responses on what the future holds. In the arrangement the sacred meaning is combined with the secular tradition of Ember Days, so that it is not clear whether the poem is religious or secular, nor if the poet is expressing personal belief or musing on the passing of the year. The composition worked so wonderfully with the themes of the VOCES8 album, 'Equinox'.

Underneath the Stars, in this beautiful arrangement for SATB choir by Jim Clements, is one of the most requested songs performed by the group. It is featured on the VOCES8 Album 'Eventide' on the Decca Classics Label.
