Annette Philip Biography

Annette Philip

Living in: Boston, MA.

Annette Philip is an Indian vocalist, pianist, composer/arranger, recording artist, and choral specialist who thrives on experimenting with the human voice. In 2003, she co-founded Artistes Unlimited (AU) in New Delhi, India, a performing arts ensemble, promoting collaboration among musicians in the city. With a vast repertoire spanning genres such as jazz, rock, R&B, funk, a-cappella, Gospel, Indian and Western Classical, Sufi and Indian folk music, AU soon became established as the premiere youth platform for independent musicians, with a rotating line up of over 250 artistes. AU also became fertile ground for external collaborations, leading to the formation of myriad other Delhi bands, and has consequently helped to bolster the indie music scene in New Delhi in it's own unique way, one of Annette's personal goals when founding the group.

At the age of seventeen, Annette began working in the professional media circuit in New Delhi. She soon become an established recording artist, lending her voice to albums, jingles and voice-overs in nine languages, for television and radio. She also found inspiration in musical theatre; performing, writing, and recording for various productions in India.

After being awarded a full scholarship, supported both by the college and the prestigious Inlaks Foundation in India, Annette attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. During her time at Berklee, she was was the 2009 recipient of the Sylvia Zunz Memorial Scholarship for her commitment to learning and performing music from the Great American Songbook tradition, as well as a two-time recipient of the Oliver Wagmann Award for outstanding contribution to the vocal department.

Annette graduated in 2009 and received her degree in Professional Music, with courses providing an emphasis on improvisation, composition, and arranging. She was immediately inducted as a faculty member of the Voice and Ensemble Departments at Berklee College of Music, as well as an ensemble director for Berklee's Education outreach City Music Program. Annette then founded Berklee's first ever Indian Ensemble, currently one of the college's largest and most diverse ensembles with over 50 members currently. She is also the artistic director of Berklee India Exchange (BIX) , a program she co-founded with fellow Berklee Indian alum, Clint Valladares, that aims to provide a platform for high profile Indian artists and Berklee students to collaborate, create, and share ideas, in order to compose music that is historic and timeless. Besides cultural exchange, BIX aims to provide scholarships for deserving and talented upcoming musicians from India to pursue higher studies at Berklee College of Music.

As an active touring musician, Annette has shared the stage with several Grammy winning artists such as A.R. Rahman, Bill Whelan, Terri Lynn Carrington, Angelique Kidjo, Philip Bailey, Buster Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, and Lew Soloff, besides collaborating with prolific musicians such as Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Ghatam Giridhar Udupa, Clinton Cerejo, Sivamani, Airto Moreira, Nona Hendryx, Mario Frangoulis, Barrie Lee Hall, Mark Gross, Adam Nussbaum, Walter Beasley, Yoron Israel, Rhiannon, and Shubha Mudgal, to name a few. She was recently a featured soloist on a "Jazz Urbane" record produced by the late George Duke.

She leads her own global jazz ensemble, The Annette Philip Quintet. With an ever-evolving sound, the group seeks to collectively explore the music and ideologies of different countries, traditions, and cultures from around the globe. Each musician brings a different perspective, and their current sound-scape draws from jazz, funk, Latin, Indian and Middle Eastern influences.

Annette is also core vocalist and Creative Director of Women of the World, a project that feeds her love for acappella music with a purpose. This internationally acclaimed vocal quartet is complemented by a rotating line-up of musicians from all over the world. As the 2014 USA National Acappella Champions, the group honors global folk traditions, performing in 29 of the world's languages (and counting), using music in the daily practice of peace.

Annette continues to evolve musically, intellectually, and spiritually through her interaction with musicians and music from all over the world. She is most grateful for the love, joy, and healing that she finds in music.
