Who would have thought, a CD with the Persuasions, known fondly as "the godfathers of a cappella," singing Frank Zappa compositions with heartfelt enthusiasm? It's true - Frank signed the Persuasions to their first record deal in 1969! Zappa, who lived in L.A., got wind of the New York-based Persuasions through the grapevine, loved them and offered them a contract (resulting in their first CD, "A Cappella,") though they didn't actually meet until the Persuasions opened for the Mothers of Invention in 1971! Anyway, "Frankly A Cappella," sounds surprisingly natural! From "Electric Aunt Jemima" and its spoken interlude (there are quite a few of these, in true Zappa tradition), to "Cheap Thrills," the fundamental blues/rock structure of these compositions is exposed, allowing the Persuasions to cut loose with true joy! So, Persuasions fans, don't be alarmed - you'll dig it, and rockers, come on board! |
