The Belleville A Cappella Choir of the Church of God and Saints of Christ, a Virginia-based church that traces its lineage back to the lost tribes of Israel, is carrying on a dynamic living folk tradition of African-American spirituals. The BACC performs richly-textured and tightly harmonized Biblical texts in gospel, jubilee and choral styles. They are featured in Alan Lomax's Southern Journey, a 13-volume series of original recordings evoking the musical world of the rural South in an era before radio, movies and television. There are 13 authentic songs here, songs like "The Gospel Train,""Keep Me As The Apple Of Thine Eye,""David Was A Shepherd Boy,""What A Time,"a Medley of Spirituals including eight classics, "The House of the Lord,""On the Battlefield for My Lord,"and finishing with the title tune. "Honor The Lamb"is one of the most powerful Gospel/Spiritual CDs we've ever heard-it's the real thing! |
