The Central Maryland Chorale (CMC) began as the Laurel Oratorio Society, an association of choir members from local churches, gathered together to sing the Brahms' Requiem at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in 1969. Now celebrating its 38th year of performing before appreciative local audiences, the CMC is a non-auditioned chorus which attracts singers from the metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore who enjoy singing choral masterworks, as well as lighter musical fare. CMC is a non-profit organization supported by its patrons and advertisers, by grants from the Mayor and City Council of Laurel, the Prince George's County Council, the Prince George's Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council (an agency funded by the State of Maryland and the National Endowment for the Arts). At a time when fine arts programs are being cut from school curricula and government support is decreasing for organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, it is particularly important to support the activities of performing arts organizations. The mission of the Central Maryland Chorale is to enrich the cultural life of the community with quality musical performances of fine choral literature including the great masterworks and new music of our times. To accomplish this mission, the Central Maryland Chorale serves the greater Baltimore-Washington area by fostering the musical and intellectual appreciation of its members and audiences, performing masterworks from the western fine art tradition, many styles of American music and the music of other cultures. The Central Maryland Chorale is committed to providing excellent performances at affordable prices and offers musical outreach programs and educational opportunities to the entire community. |
