We were founded in the spring of 2009! Margot and Lauren, two Wake Forest alums, happened to have a good number of friends who had sung with various groups in the past, so Deep Dish was really born out of their friend group--4 girls and 2 boys. Margot and Lauren roped in a large contingent of boys--3 more members--who went to Grinnell (including Alex!) within the first few months through our friend/member Supat, and Deep Dish was all of a sudden a legit group. We spent most of that first year messing around, and didn't actually perform until June of 2010! Our name actually started out as a joke--Margot's cousins were visiting Chicago, and she and her sister Molly were talking to them about how they were going to start a new a cappella group. They started brainstorming group names, and jokingly came up with two "Chicago"-specific names: Three Flat and Deep Dish. We never actually legitimately considered naming ourselves Deep Dish, but once we started rehearsing and trying to come up with a name, we brought it up every week. It always made us laugh, and eventually, it stuck! |
