Artistic License is a Barbershop quartet with a smooth sound, deep musicality and a lighthearted, professional style that audiences easily respond to. Based out of Northern California, the group sings songs from a wide range of origins and eras. From Tin Pan Alley to the Irish highlands. From jazz to Disney to contemporary pop or Christian rock. Their choice of songs reflects a preference for tunes that are meaningful and distinctive which can be delivered in an authentic and artistic style. The quartet enjoys finely crafted melodies and lyrics and searches for arrangements that will make their audience say "I love that song!"
Dedicated to furthering the barbershop style and making it accessible to audiences everywhere, Artistic License is the 2011 champions of the Far Western District of the Barbershop Harmony Society, an honor won in their very first attempt! The up and coming quartet earned honors as one of the Top 10 quartets in the world at the International Barbershop Harmony Championships, which included groups from as far away as Sweden, Spain, England, Australia and New Zealand.
The quartet boasts over 100 years of combined performing experience and features a barbershop legend (Todd Kidder, who sang on the Ed Sullivan Show!) and a musical wunderkind (bass Jason Dyer is a highly sought arranger nationwide). The foursome have a passion for introducing young men to four part harmony and are regular clinicians at youth harmony camps across the country.
Artistic License's first CD, A Very Artistic Christmas, was released in 2014 and won artistic acclaim as a Contemporary Acappella Recording Awards nominee for Best Holiday Album. The summer of 2015 brought the highly anticipated release of their first non-holiday album, Painting Outside the Lines.
Artistic License is a very active performing ensemble and has entertained audiences across the United States and Canada.

Review: This is the first recording release from this talented California quartet, and it's a great addition to any a cappella lover's holiday music library. It's a collection of new treatments of holiday favorites, full of lush harmonies and ringin' chords, and it was CARA nominated as the best Holiday Album of 2014. Highlights include: the gorgeous "White Christmas" featuring super-tenor Todd Kidder, the dramatic "I Wonder as I Wander", a sweet new treatment of Chris Rice's "Welcome to Our World", and a very touching rendition of "Joseph's Lullabye", featuring Gabe Caretto. Put your holiday spirits in the hands of Artistic License and they will deliver in a very genuine way!

Review: This highly-awaited release captures the Artistic License joy we've all seen in their live shows and lets you bring it home with you. This rising quartet has one of the most listenable sounds around and their attention to music detail is refreshing. It features lots of fresh arrangements by some of the very best young arrangers in the Society and the foursome treats each song like it's a gem. One of the neat things about this album is that each song is unique - it's not more and more of the same. Songs that stand out include: Sixteen Tons, where bass Jason Dyer lays down the law; Let's Just Stay In, a newish jazz tune that just says "comfortable love" all over it, I Can Only Imagine, where tenor Todd Kidder raises the (very high) roof; Everybody Wants to be a Cat, where the quartet combines Disney and barbershop and somehow turns it into an outrageous, swingin' party; and the closing Parting Glass, a traditional Irish tune that gets a lovely and thoughtful treatment. This is a very engaging group and this CD is a great addition to any a cappella lover's collection.
Songlist: It's a Grand Night for Singing, Sixteen Tons, Lets Just Stay In, Isn't This A Lovely Day (To Be Caught in the Rain), Looking at You, All I Need Is The Girl, Gospel Medley, The Very Thought of You, What Chance Have I With Love?, I Can Only Imagine, I'm Yours, Everybody Wants To Be A Cat, The Parting Glass
