Alley Cats : Nine Lives

Review: When we first saw the Alley Cats it was giving a "showcase concert" on a small school stage at the A Cappella Summit, singing 4 or 5 songs. What was clear was that these four young guys simply performed sweeter, better-arranged, funnier, more together Doo-Wop than anyone we had ever heard. "9 Lives" (9 "live" performances, get it?) proves that they are even more so now. Their song selection includes our very favorites: "Blue Moon," "Duke of Earl," "Come Go With Me," "Little Darlin'," "La Bamba," "Little Bitty Pretty One," "The Book of Love," "Barbara Ann," plus 3 bonus tracks, including "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Rock N Roll is Here to Stay." The DVD includes cool footage from their appearances on Arsenio Hall and other shows, and begins with live songs from an outdoor California festival, then follows the guys on their ride to Vegas for very hot performances and outtakes there. Alley Cat fans, you of course will buy this DVD because you know that the Cats are "America's Premier Doo-Wop Group." Those unfamiliar with the group, you of course will want to see how good you have to be to bill yourself as "America's Premier Doo-Wop Group," and you won't be disappointed. We love these guys, and "9 Lives" is a treat from beginning to end!

Songlist: A Cappella, Come Go With Me, The Duke Of Earl, Little Bitty Pretty One, Book Of Love, Little Darlin, La Bamba / Twist And Shout, Barbara Ann, Blue Moon, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Rock 'N Roll Is Here To Stay

Forever Plaid : Forever Plaid

Review: Based upon the stage production of the same name, this DVD is equal parts silly schtick and a musically adept and professional parody of the close harmony groups of the 1950's - Freshmen, Hi-Lo's and the like. Romantic themes dominate-"Three Coins In A Fountain, "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing," 'Cry,"-with a "Caribbean Medley" and "Scotland The Brave" (a homily to Plaid) for yukks. The style is unapologetically sentimental and deliberately cliched, but will be good fun for those who are familiar with the colloquialisms typical of the period. A good portion of the dialogue is included to introduce the songs and explain the plot.

Songlist: Three Coins In The Fountain, Gotta' Be This Or That/ Undecided, Moments To Remember, Crazy 'Bout Ya' Baby, No Not Much, Perfida, Cry, Sixteen Tons/ Chain Gang, A Tribute to Mr. C/ SIng to Me Mr. C/ Dream Along with Me/ Catch a Falling Star, Caribbean Plaid/ Kingston Market/ Jamaica Farewell/ Matilda, Matilda, Heart and Soul, Lady of Spain, Scotland the Brave, Shangri-La/ Rags to Riches, Love Is A Many/ Splendored Thing, Once Upon a Time, Deux Ex Plaid, The End

Los Zafiros : Music From the Edge of Time

Review: Music, History and emotion fuel this dynamic, award-winning film tribute from producer-director Lorenzo DeStefano. For those whose lives they deeply touched, Los Zafiros are legends. Often Referred to as The Beatles of 1960s Cuba, The Sapphires were a Cuban musical phenomenon molded by their time and place. Bes described as world music before there was world music, they caused a sensation in Havana and beyond into the early 1970s with their brilliant mix of American-inspired doo-wop touched with Afro-Cuban rhythms, salsa, son and other traditional Latin Forms.

Songlist: Opening, Cuando Yo Lo Conoci, Cuba and America- 1950's and '60s, Interviews, Two Roads to Home, Survivors and Casualties, Caya Hueso Street Interviews, Reflections of Families and Friends, Naming Los Zafiros, Return to Egrem Studios, Los Zafiros in Europe, Miguel Reunites With Chino's Brother, Los Nuevos Zafiros, Coming Apart, Egrem Studios "Mis Sentimientos", Galban and Cancio to Cementerio Cristobal Colon, "They Will Never Be Forgotten", Los Zafiros, End Credits

Various Artists : The Doo Wop Sound

Review: This beautifully-done DVD is like a History Channel documentary on the Doo-Wop phenomenon of the 1950s and 60s, starting with its streetcorner roots in cities like NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and SF, and progressing into the recording and performance mainstream of American culture. Along the way we hear fascinating interviews with people like Ronnie (I) Italiano, DJs Don K. King and Bobby Jay, Louis Lymon (Frankie's Brother and a star in his own right), Pookie Hudson of the Spaniels (who wrote "Goodnight, Sweetheart" to his first love, not to write a hit), Earl "Speedo" Carroll of the Cadillacs, and Arlene Smith of the Chantels (who talks about being 12 years old when they scored their first hit with "Maybe"). We hear about and see vintage footage of the first Doo-Wop sex symbol, Sonny Till, The Ravens singing what arguably is the first Doo-Wop song, "Count Every Star," and the 1940s roots groups, The Deep River Boys, the butter-smooth Mills Bros. and SF's Golden Gate Quartet. We hear why and how a cappella, nonsense syllables and silly lyrics were used by poor young singers to create a full sound and "get noticed," the bombshell effect on the recording industry of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" ... I could rave on and on here, but I'll just give you the Chapter headings to give you a taste of what's here: "The Early Years," "Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers," "Romance and Innocence," "The Urban Streets," "The Girl Groups," "The Tour Bus" (which goes into the racism the mostly Northern groups encountered in the South), "The Business of Doo-Wop," "The Cadillacs" and "The End of An Era." Lots of great vintage footage here, of singers, cities, recording studios, live performances with star-studded playbills in lights-this is a sumptuous feast for the a cappella, R&B and pop music fan, as well as anyone who is interested in the amazing cultural history of the 50s and 60s. Enough said--"The Doo-Wop Sound" is a winner from beginning to end!

Songlist: The Early Years, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Romance and Innocence, The Urban Streets, The Girl Groups, The Tour Bus, The Business of Doo Wop, The Cadillacs, The End of an Era
