Vocaluptuous

 Vocaluptuous

Mixed Contemporary Sextet from Singapore, Singapore.

Formed in 1997, it made history in 1999 with Singapore's first a cappella musical, No Strings Attached, featured during Action Theatre's 42-day arts festival.

The year 2000 was another watershed year for the group. In May of that year, Vocaluptuous produced its very own musical cum concert, which played to full houses for all three nights. The musical showcased not just their singing talents, but writing, acting and dancing abilities as well! Reviews were very positive and encouraging, with audiences clamouring for more.

Vocaluptuous has been the only local group nominated for Best Holiday Song (Joyful/Joy to the World) by the international Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA) for the Recording awards (CARA) in 2002.

In 2003, Vocaluptuous received an award for Contributions to the Performing Arts from the Rotary Club of Singapore (West).

Having recorded songs in several compilation albums, Vocaluptuous then embarked on its first solo recording project: the Christmas album entitled "All Wrapped Up". In conjunction with Myx Studios and the Rotary Club (West), Vocaluptuous gave proceeds amounting to $75 000 to the Society for the Physically Disabled to buy a specially outfitted minibus to transport wheelchairs.

This debut album was so well received that EMI signed a 3-year distribution deal (recently renewed for another 3 years) to market it in Singapore, while Fiesto Groups, Inc (USA) and The Hello Dee Music Group USA did the same for distribution in Asia, Europe and USA. It sold more than 6500 copies in Singapore, where it reached the top 20 in Singapore in the week ending December 19 2003.

As a premier a cappella group, Vocaluptuous has performed at many high profile events such as award presentations, gala anniversary celebrations, official openings and launches and concerts for national and international audiences. A full listing of Vocaluptuous' performances can be found in the table below.

In 2004, Vocaluptuous maintained its high profile at events such as the official opening of the new Arts House at The Old Parliament, where it performed two collaborative songs with Italian a cappella group Neri Per Caso for the President of Singapore. In addition, Vocaluptuous performed at the launch of the President's Challenge, and the 100th anniversary of Eden Hall for HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York. Vocaluptuous thrilled audiences with its mix of ethnic songs for the National Day Concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall and was very warmly received during the Celebrate December series at the Outdoor Theatre.

In March 2005, Vocaluptuous embarked on its first major overseas engagement. Invited by the Taiwan A Cappella Association to perform at their Asian A Cappella Festival 2005, Vocaluptuous wowed Taiwanese audiences in Kaohsiung and Taipei, receiving standing ovations and rapturous praise.

December 2005's Coffee Morning and Afternoon Tea programmes had record full-house attendances when Vocaluptuous held a mini-concert then, winning audiences with its warm, humorous and intimate banter and rapport.

Vocaluptuous also opened for Paquito D'Rivera and The New York Voices during the Mosaic Music Festival 2006, and was interviewed by the BBC for a programme featuring highlights from music festivals around the world.

December 2006 saw Vocaluptuous in concert yet again, this time performing a record 8 shows of its aptly-titled Lush.Pop.Jazz concert at the Esplanade Theatre Studio, breaking new ground yet again with its stylish theatrical setting and complex musical arrangements.

In August 2007 and June 2008, Vocaluptuous was invited by the Singapore Tourism Board to perform at its 3-day Food Festival in Tokyo and the Singapore Fair 2008 in Fukuoka respectively, where they impressed audiences with their professionalism and slick presentation, and were featured on a radio programme with LOVE FM.

Vocaluptuous was also invited to perform in Melbourne, Australia as part of the contingent for Singapore Day in October 2008 where their songs were highly praised as refreshing, heart-warming and moving.

Their second album, Notes from an Island, released in November 2008, features songs of home, and with CD sales of approximately 4000 copies, Vocaluptuous has raised about $28 000 for Kidz Horizon Appeal, a charity which helps fund medical bills for children with terminal illnesses.

In 2009, Vocaluptuous was honoured to be selected to sing the national anthem a cappella style for the National Day Parade. In addition, musically, Vocaluptuous is adventurous, funky and refreshing, preferring an eclectic mix of music styles like traditional, jazz, bossa nova, R&B and pop and diverse languages ranging from Chinese, Malay, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese and even Hindi.

Vocally unique and visually entertaining, Vocaluptuous ranks at the top of the list of a cappella talents in Singapore.

Review: Five man-one woman Vocaluptuous is one of the best-known a cappella groups in Singapore. They put on Singapore's first a cappella musical, "No Strings Attached," under the direction of a very talented musical director, Juliette Lay. The attractive, youthful group has a light, contemporary, jazzy sound, with sweet vocals and tight vocal percussion. "Jingle Bells" is an amazingly arranged joy, as is a surprising, blue-note, rap-flavored "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." a rich, sumptuous "The Christmas Song," a pop-sampled "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," a brilliant, minor-key "Do You Hear What I Hear," "Silent Night" as a laid-back reggae beach anthem, the heartbreak of "Last Christmas"- each tune is a thoughtfully-arranged, perfectly performed gem. One of our favorite Christmas CDs of the year, and highly recommended!

Songlist: Jingle Bells, Quando (Someday), Hark the Herald Angels Sing, The Christmas Song, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Do You Hear What I Hear, Silent Night, Last Christmas, O Holy Night, African Noel / O Sifuni Mungu
