David Mooney was born in Sligo, Ireland. He began piano studies at the age of four and at twelve won a scholarship to the Schola Cantorum at St. Finian's College in Mullinger, Ireland where he studied piano, organ, and composition. Mooney continued his studies at the National University of Ireland at Maynooth, receiving a BA in Music and French and an MA in Music. Subsequently, he completed the PhD degree in Musicology in 1999 at the University College, Dublin. In 1988, Mooney joined the staff of Ireland's largest music institution, the Conservatory of Music and Drama at the Dublin Institute of Technology. He has lectured in piano and academic studies at the graduate and postgraduate levels and is particularly committed to teacher education. A contributor to the latest edition of the New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Mooney is currently Head of the Department of Keyboard Studies. These editions of Mooney's beautiful arrangements of Irish folksongs include original texts, some in English and some in Irish Gaelic. Those in Irish Gaelic are not meant to be sung in English and include the original text with an Irish translation and IPA guides in the front matter; in the body of the music a singing transliteration is provided underneath the original language. Instrumental parts are available separately. Mooney's stunning choral arrangements are sung regularly in Ireland and the UK. Recordings of his works are featured on Scenes of an Irish Christmas and Ireland's Voices for Peace (both on Viking Records) and a third CD entitled CÓR, featuring his arrangements sung by the Celtic Ayres Chamber Choir and the Radio-Television Ireland. |
