Mark's musical education began at the local church in Brixton, South London, teaching himself to play the piano at a very early age, and going on to lead the church youth choir at just 15 years old. His studies took him to the Colchester Institute on the Vocal Music course, where a natural ability to inspire and lead shone through. Regularly putting together singing groups and performing with a Soul & Jazz/Funk band, his love of spiritual music also saw him join a gospel choir in his 'spare time'! After leaving Colchester he auditioned for a place on the MA in Voice Studies at the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after a year of intense study, graduated in 2001. Mark also gained a PGCE in Music Education from the Institute of Education in 2006. Mark has taken up various positions at educational institutions across the UK, driven by his love for teaching. Positions at Westminster University, The BRIT School and The Academy of Contemporary Music followed, as well as running multiple masterclasses for Kingston University and The British Voice Association. In 2003, Mark formed Singology; a community gospel choir based in central London which has since grown its membership base to include ten additional choirs across London. Two years later Mark expanded his choir-leading repertoire in creating the first Gospel Choir at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. The ACM Gospel Choir went on to become semi-finalists in the BBC's 'Last Choir Standing' in 2008 and now perform regularly at a range of public, private and industry events across the country. The choir won the Urban Music Award for Best Gospel Act 2014 and in the same year set a new world record for the highest ever carol concert on and plane. They have released three studio albums to date. Mark has also added another string to his bow, becoming a published choral arranger with an eight-book series entitled 'Sing Out: Pop Songs for Today's Choirs'. Mark has just completed writing a book entitled "100 Ways To Inspire Your Choir" published by Bloomsbury.. |
