Scored for unison voices and piano, this piece is a syllabic and through-composed setting of Laura E. Richards' text. The distinctive aspect of the piece is its rhythmic interest and shifting meters, its humor, evident in the lumbering nature of the piano accompaniment in the lower range of the keyboard, and the declamation of the text.

Royal Canadian Air Force pilot John Magee wrote his popular poem High Flight when he was just 19 years old. In the poem he describes the delirious feeling of wheeling and soaring, and an intimate connection with the divine. Setting these words, the composer's music soars and dives and floats and reflects the joy this young pilot experienced from the pilot's chair.

The Ecstatic Songs Cycle was a project with conductor Sandra Snow that spanned eight years. The first song was All I Was Doing Was Breathing (48019949), while the second song Don't Go (48022954) followed four years later. This movement has musical material that seems familiar, melodic gestures similar to those of the previous movements, and the reappearance of the solo cello as the longing in Mira's voice. There is a sense of resolve in her words and in this music.

Each voice assumes the role of one of Laura E. Richard's characters in a spirited and playful exchange characterized by an incessant rhythmic chatter. The text is set syllabically, in a declamatory manner, and highlighted musically as the verbal altercation escalates, culminating in a brief imitative passage which tumbles to its conclusion. With a text excerpted from the beautiful Stacy Barton poem Flight, this work sings of yearning, dreaming and the sensation of flying with a gentle lyricism and dance-like quality with buoyant, lifted phrases.
This well-known Native American text speaks of an intimate relationship with nature and the earth. Beauty, softness, fragrance and freshness abound. This is a sensual text, in that each phrase conjures images that stimulate our senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. Duration ca. 2:30.
The renowned Bengali poet, Tagore, was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913. His elegant verse suits the lyrical quality of the music. There is a prominent violin obligato that soars over the rich harmonic language. And, as always, the Brunner piano accompaniment is supportive and expressive but never in the way. The violin part is included in the choral score.
