Seattle Peace Chorus

Seattle Peace Chorus

Community Chorus

Based in Seattle, WA

The mission of the Seattle Peace Chorus (SPC) is to communicate through music the desire for a just and peaceful world; to consistently present SPC's message through choral excellence and nonviolent activism; to celebrate life in all its diversity; to build and sustain harmonious relationships and cultural bridges locally and globally.

The Seattle Peace Chorus was founded in 1983 under the leadership of Helen Lauritzen (SPC Director, 1983-2000). The founding of the Chorus was inspired by Target Seattle, a region-wide activity formed to raise awareness about the growing threat of nuclear war in that era. Helen's involvement in the effort led to further dialogue about the nuclear threat, and the need to offer peace activists a way to communicate a positive vision of the future - a way to express musically their desire for peace. In Helen's words: "...this (the chorus) seemed like a way to do it joyously." By reaching out through music and making personal connections, the chorus hoped and continues to hope now to make a difference.

Founded - 1983.
