It was time for a high-quality community children's chorus in Placer County. Several teachers, musicians, and friends of Founding Artistic Director, Judy Britts, met in the summer of 2008 to formulate and implement the Northern California Children's Chorus. The first workshop brought 50+ singers and their families to experience singing in a choir. Thirty-five families joined, Melissa Garcia was hired as a training choir director, a board of directors was finalized, and the Northern California Children's Chorus was in rehearsal, ready to learn, grow, and perform. The Blue Line Arts Gallery invited us to perform at one of their Open Houses that Fall. Our first performance. We walked in the Roseville Holiday parade and produced our first holiday concert. As the choirs grew in numbers, they also grew musically. Some of the highlights of the first years: Tour to Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Children's Chorus, Intermediate Choir hosted us in homestays and a joint concert. We sang at a local church for their service and enjoyed the sights in the Pasadena area. A Ceremony of Carols: The 13 members of Concert Choir performed the Ceremony of Carols with harp. In 2012, several of our singers were growing out of the children's choir but still wanted to sing. Bella Voce was created for high school young women. Primarily designed for singers who had grown through the program, new singers to NCCC were also brought in so that more interesting and challenging music could be performed. In 2015, the group was invited to perform in a woman's chorus festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Eight singers made the trip of a lifetime. That same year, our advanced children's chorus, Bel Canto, performed at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Each year the NCCC strives to not only have outstanding performances and educational tours. We also work to create literate musicians who not only perform well, but also understand the written music that they are performing. In 2016, Sarah Conrad Van Hoy joined the teaching staff to form the fourth level of NCCC. A much needed intermediate level gives our young singers a stepping stone to the advanced choir as well as giving a place for older singers who want to join NCCC but have little to no musical experience. |
