Since 1965 WomenSing has engaged and delighted audiences in the Bay Area and beyond. Their reputation for excellence draws members from the entire San Francisco Bay Area. Singing with a vibrant and beautifully blended sound, WomenSing programs include both the traditional and the unexpected, featuring great landmarks of the treble repertoire, seldom-performed works, new music, commissions from nationally recognized composers, and familiar music from all eras. Performances include rewarding collaborations with major performing groups such as San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, Jubilate Orchestra, California Shakespeare Theatre, Dimensions Dance Theater of Oakland, Piedmont East Bay Children's Choirs, and Contra Costa Children's Chorus and the finest Bay Area musicians. WomenSing's most exciting musical outreach program is their Youth Inspiring Youth partnership with River of Words, a Berkeley-based nonprofit that educates youth about nature through art and poetry. Through this program, WomenSing commissions young composers to create music using the inspired words of award-winning young poets. The young composers are mentored by nationally recognized composer, Libby Larsen. Additionally WomenSing has held benefit performances for organizations supporting the well-being of women and children and presented concerts through Bread and Roses for patrons who cannot otherwise attend live performances. WomenSing has performed throughout Europe, Asia, Latin and South America, Canada and the United States. In 2010 WomenSing received the Chorus America/ASCAP Alice Parker Award as well as the Contra Costa County Arts Commission Award for Excellence. |
