Princeton Singers

Director: Steven Sametz

 Princeton Singers

Mixed Choral Chorus from Princeton, NJ, United States.

The Princeton Singers is a small, professional, independent chamber choir. In recent years, it has earned a reputation as one of the nation's preeminent chamber choirs. Founded in 1983 by John Bertalot, then choir-master organist at Trinity Church in Princeton, New Jersey, the ensemble was soon hailed by critics for its clarity of tone, elegance of execution, and purity of tuning. Since being appointed Artistic Director in 1998, composer-conductor Steven Sametz has expanded the group's repertoire to range from medieval to modern, including gospel, jazz, and popular song. Today, The Princeton Singers is a vital force in the creation of new works for choir. Both through a strong commissioning program and participation in workshops for aspiring composers, The Princeton Singers is strongly committed to the creation of new choral repertoire.

In addition to popular hometown performances, The Princeton Singers has been featured at conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the American Choral Directors Association and Chorus America. Sametz has led the ensemble in collaborative concerts with Chanticleer, The American Boychoir, Westminster Choir College's Schola Cantorum, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and Lehigh University Choral Arts. The Princeton Singers has been heard on National Public Radio's "Performance Today," With Heart and Voice," and broadcast by the BBC while on tour in Europe.

Princeton Singers : In The Midst of Life

Review: The music on this recording is a juxtaposition of joyous and somber. The album begins and ends with music by Gerald Finzi and features two Requiem settings by Henry Walford Davies and Herbert Howells. The setting by Davies, which is "in memory of those fallen in the war," begins with a beautiful soprano solo. The Requiems are set using texts from the Book of Common Prayer. The majority of the music on this recording is by twentieth century British composers, which is the focus of this group. The notable exception is Samuel Barber's Reincarnations. This superb choir is conducted by founder John Bertalot.

Songlist: Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice, A Short Requiem in D Major, Requiem, Jesu, Grant Me This I Pray, Reincarnations, Opus 16, My Spirit Sang All Day

Princeton Singers : Reincarnations

Review: Reincarnations was recorded during the choir's first season under the direction of Steven Sametz. The repertoire explores a series of connections between the old and the new. It opens with Samuel Barber's Reincarnations, with texts by James Stephens which focus on different facets of love. Sametz has three pieces showcased on this recording: "On the Death of a Friend," "Magnificat" and "in time of ." Sametz's "Magnificat" is juxtaposed by that if Villiers Stanford, both featuring the resident choir of the American Boychoir School. Other pairings are two very different settings of the joyful text "Exultate Deo" by Palestrina and Poulenc. This is a very nice recording marking the beginning of a new era for this wonderful choir.

Songlist: Reincarnations, Come haro donque, Chi chili chi, Death Hath Deprived Me of My Dearest Friend, Magnificat in G, Magnificat, Exultate Deo, Exultate Deo, Babylone, Due cori di Michelangelo Buonarroti, In time of
