Review: The Bearn province in south-western France has a polyphonic tradition of song which can still be heard today. The songs are performed while standing in a circle, allowing the voices to intertwine to achieve a true sense of unity. From pastoral scenes to contemplations on love, these songs vary from region to region and are continually evolving. The gutsy natural singing style and many of the harmonies are reminiscent of the Bulgarian style. This recording by La Novem is a unique and special musical experience.
