Damenes Aften was founded by Erland Dalen in 1992, and has existed more or less in the same form as then, ever since. The name Damenes Aften (Ladies' Evening) has become a familiar name in the cultural scene in large areas of Eastern Norway.
The choir started out as a women's choir, but was for a short period of time changed into a chamber choir with mixed voices, before it went back to being a women's choir in 1995. It's been a women's choir ever since, with a number of members being at about 16 singers. In October 2007 the choir won three classes in which they competed in Riva del Garda, Italy. They were ranked no. 15 among Musica Mundis Top 1000 choirs, and no. 5 within performers of Sacred Music.
The choir has also performed in a Habaneras-competition in Torrevieja in Spain, as well as many other festivals in- and outside of Norway. They have visited Spain several times, and value the opportunity to travel. Concerts with great artists like Arve Tellefsen, Sissel Kyrkjebo, Bjorn Eidsvag, Ole Edvard Antonsen and Sigvart Dagsland has given the choir wonderful experiences.
Damenes Aften's excellent conductor puts a lot of time and effort into schooling the singers in singing according to genre. The sound should be different according to different genres. The choir has also worked with other voice teachers and song pedagogues, always striving to reach higher levels of musicality - with good results. The singers have shown that they manage this, among other things by making two CDs, in addition to performing. They made the CD "Mitt hjerte er ditt"/"My heart belongs to you" in 2003, and "Crossing Countries" in 2008. They both received 5s on the dice in several newspapers, and are often played on the radio.
The choir has participated at the Korvake (a local choir gathering, with many concerts etc.) in the Hamar Dome in 2004 and 2006, and they have given several concerts in the Hamar Dome and at the Hedmark Museum through the years. Singing for tour groups at the museum is a nice part of the singers' life in the choir. In the fall of 2007, they had the chance to share a stage with GT Sara and Liv Simensen (local comedians) in Lucky Naeroset. Still, they are perhaps best known for their Christmas cabaret at the restaurant Svare & Berg in Hamar, which is performed every December together with Knut Faldbakken and Liv Simensen. In December 2008, they performe their 11th cabaret.
In June 2006, they started what they plan to make a new tradition; a series of concerts based on music by one artist only. They started out with Paul Simon, and in 2007 Stevie Wonder was their chosen artist. In 2008 it was given that they presented themselves and their music recorded in "Crossing Countries", and the concerts were sold out.
Numerous hours of work are put down by each of the singers. They rehearse and organize all year, and every singer takes her part of the job. The choir wishes to constantly compete for jobs, in addition to motivating themselves to travel to festivals and competitions - and they need everyone to contribute in order to achieve these things. As well as working for themselves, they have also started to work for others. Damenes Aften wants to work for growth and recruiting within the choir scene, and has during the last couple of years worked in a cooperation with Hedemarken Youth Choir. Damenes Aften are committed to lead some of the youth choir's rehearsals, as well as hosting short seminars where the teaching of the young children and youth lead to a concert together at the end. The assignments in this cooperation are evenly divided, and every singer has her chance to participate. This is great inspiration, and something for everyone to reach for. Perhaps all the Ladies will end up as choir instructors and -teachers when their active singing life in Damenes Aften is over? They also plan to give lessons in how to produce good concerts, throughout 2009.

Review: Winners of numerous European choral awards and competitions this talented Norwegian womens choir has toured extensively and is much in demand. Founder and conductor Erland Dalen is an active and well-known figure in the Scandinavian music and choir scene and works with many other choirs and ensembles, many of who have also won awards under his direction. Great arrangements here on the many English songs as well as some traditional Norwegian folk songs. A worthy addition indeed to anybody's collection.
