Christmas music is some of the most fun choral music out there, both to sing and simply to drink in. Whether the choir is singing centuries’ old pieces by Tavener and Britten, or modern and light-hearted work like Rudolph and Frosty, it’s heartwarming, spirit-raising music that just makes you want to gather with loved ones around a well-lit tree, enjoying a roaring fire. Even in the heart of Summer.

Away In A Manger The Wexford Carol The First Day Riu Riu Silent Night The Coventry Carol Codhlaim Go Suan Christmas Day is Come Winter, Fire and Snow Pie Jesu Hymn to the Virgin O Holy Night There Is No Rose |
Mixed-voice Irish folk ensemble Anuna, founded in 1987 by Dublin composer Michael McGlynn to explore the music of the ancient Celts, have recorded a self-titled debut album--and after recording a short choral piece called Cloudsong used by Riverdance, toured with the dance troupe and recorded the album "Riverdance the Show." Most of the 13 cuts on "Christmas Songs" were arranged by Michael McGlynn, and "Codhlaim Go Suan," the lovely "Christmas Day Is Come," "Pie Jesu" and "Hymn to the Virgin" were written by McGlynn. "Winter, Fire and Snow" is also a group original. The haunting, surreal harmonies of Anuna lend a surprising flavor to carols like "Away in a Manger," "The Wexford Carol," "Riu Riu," "Silent Night" and "The Coventry Carol." Unique and startlingly beautiful. Some light accompaniment.

Thanks to the legacy of Robert Shaw, Atlanta is rich in choral groups, including several which have gained national distinction. Some of these groups were founded by members of Shaw's Atlanta Symphony Chorus and have survived over the decades to make their own name. The Atlanta Singers, begun 24 years ago, is among the most notable. David Barensinger conducts the Singers, whose repertoire on "Chantez" includes sacred Renaissance masterworks (Praetorius' "Psallite," "Swete Was The Song the Virgine Soong," Victoria's "O Magnum Mysterium," and "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen"), traditional carols ("Il est ne," "Wassail Song," "Silent Night," "Jingle Bells" and "Deck The Hall"), traditional Spanish carols ("A la nanita nana" and "Esta noche nace un Nino"), and traditional French carols ("Dans les hombres de la nuit," the title tune, and "Entre le boeuf et l'ane gris"). Intricate, classical harmonies perfectly sung by this talented ensemble.

When an ensemble like the BBC Singers, renowned for its commitment to the music of our time, sets out to record a Christmas CD you can be sure that the repertoire will include material rather different from the usual run of popular standards and arrangements! One star, at last includes eight new carols (six of them specially-commissioned by BBC Radio 3), several premiere recordings, and a selection of music serious and light-hearted, contemplative and joyful by some of the leading British, European and North American choral composers of the day. Composers include Martland, Weir, Ades, MacMillan, Tavener, Kornowicz, Rodney Bennet and Harle. Listen to "Make We Joy" in Real Audio.

Christmas tunes from New England, the deep South, Shaker spirituals, and European-inflected folk songs, along with alternate lyrics to "Adeste Fideles" and "Auld Lang Syne". The music is eerily beautiful in that bittersweet folk way and highlights include a gorgeous solo strophic tune, "The Heavenly Courtier," a hypnotic erotic Bridegroom spiritual, a few folksy close harmony tunes, and Jesus, the Light of the World (alternate tune for Hark, the Herald Angels Sing). The singing is both beautiful for hearing and insightful for listening, and even in the old warhorses, they play with an exuberance that makes the listener what to sing out loud. This is a disc to warm the coldest American Scrooge's heart, and will hold a proud place in my Christmas collection.

The Renowned, 31-strong Cambridge Singers have a present for us: 23 songs of Christmas, many of them written, composed and/or arranged by contemporary composer John Rutter, a giant in the Choral world. "Jesus Child," "There Is A Flower," "Donkey Carol," "Wildwood Carol," "Angels' Carol," "Mary's Lullaby" - Rutter's original music is lovely, and the CS are the group to do it justice. Also fine are all the traditional carols like "I Saw Three Ships" and "Joy to the World." The songs are divided into six sections: Prologue, The Christmas Story, Christmas Night, Christmas Reflections, Christmas Joy and Epilog. Most of the songs are accompanied by the London Sinfonia. The liner notes are extensive and beautiful. A monumental achievement for the Cambridge Singers, a generous, spirited and brilliant Christmas CD! Listen to Deck The Hall in Real Audio.

"The aim of this recording is to evoke a sense of the winter season, as reflected in some of the infinitely varied music inspired by it. Christmas inevitably lies at the heart of this wonderful melange of scared and secular, spiritual and convivial, poetic and earthy." - John Rutter. A compilation of tracks from 1982 thru 2003, mostly recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London where the exquisite acoustics showcases the voices of the choir to perfection. A most enjoyable Christmas collection indeed!

Recorded in 1981 shortly after the Cambridge Singers formation, "Christmas Star" then quickly disappeared, as the master tapes were lost. However, the original digital version was found in 1996. Therefore, the Cambridge Singers first Christmas release can once again be heard. Directed by John Rutter, whose standard of taste and excellence is of legendary repute, this multivoice classical ensemble has a pure and weightless tone and broad dynamic range, from pianissimo to forte. With arrangements also by Rutter, the carols are mostly familiar, such as "I Wander As I Wander," "Ding Dong! Merrily On High" and "What Child Is This," but there are a few rarities: "O Little One Sweet," and "Twas In The Moon Of Wintertime." Songlist

Though founded only in 1996 by Artistic Director Daniel Hughes, this ensemble of thirty voices has already begun to distinguish itself with an eclectic program. As part of their mission, the group seeks to unify diverse peoples, and the track list for "Of Christmastide" reflects this concern. Weighted somewhat towards the 20th century, with Williams, Tavener, Rutter, Holst and Lauridsen amongst the composers represented, the balance includes two Latvian carols, James McKelvey's arrangement of "Deck The Hall in 7/8" and the Nigerian "Betelehemu." Their sonority is broad and expansive, with an airy and open delivery. Some percussion and woodwinds on a few tracks.

At the Cathedral Church of York, England, there has been music celebrating the Birth of Christ since the earliest times, as the present building was consecrated in 1472. The procession of the 30-voice Choir, bright against the ancient stones of the building, the glow of the candles the glistening lights on the tree, and the singing of best-loved Christmas carolsÇthis is what "Carols" is about. 21 magnificent organ accompanied carols, sung in the Minster's superb acoustic, from "The First Nowell," "Coventry Carol," "The Holly and the Ivy," and "In Dulci Jubilo" to "Silent Night," "O Leave Your Sheep," "Behold the Great Creator" and "Good Christian Men, Rejoice." Superb!

The choir at Westminister Abbey performs three Carol Services annually, in conjunction with Advent Sunday, The Feast of St. Stephen and The Feast of the Holy Innocents. These 20 carols and hymns are derived from these performances by this 34 member male choir, and many are familiar, such as "Good King Wenceslas" and "Ding Dong Merrily On High"; however, director Simon Preston has a penchant for modern compositions as well. "Alleluya," (1921), written by Peter Wishart, replicates the celebratory chiming of bells, while alternating between major and minor tonalities; "Nowell," (1934) by Peter Maxwell Davies, never declares its tonic, but remains suspended without resolution. Mostly a cappella.

There is bliss to be found in hearing a pitch-perfect chord held by a chorus. 24-strong Choral Arts Northwest achieves chord after chord like this, a sound that is remarkable for its warmth, richness and full-throated power. Precision and accuracy of intonation are its hallmarks, as well as a phenomenal range of dynamics and a limitless range of shading. There are 19 generally organ-accompanied songs here, some in Swedish or Norwegian, some in EnglishÇall sacred Christmas church music. Extensive liner notes tell us the meaning of each of these exceptional songs, but the story here is the singers, who carry each finely-crafted chord as if it were a gift to a very special baby long ago. Touching, soothing sacred music from Scandinavia. Listen to " Jeg er sa glad " in RealAudio.

This CD is a lovely assortment of familiar Christmas carols. The opening carol, "Once in Royal David's City" with soloist Maribeth Diggle is especially nice as voices are gradually added until the full choir is singing. Most pieces are a cappella with a few accompanied by organ. Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus are both directed by Paul Halley. The combination of the children's and adult choirs creates a beautiful sound. This is a delightful treat for Christmas.

The Concordia Christmas Concert has always sought to illuminate through music, art and the spoken word the rich tapestry of parable, theology, and the story that is the interaction of God and humankind that is found in the Holy Bible. Throughout Biblical history, Christ is referred to as the living water. "Come to the Living Water" is about the image of Christ and the coming of Christ into this barren and thirsty world. Concordia's world-renowned musical groups and ensembles, The Concordia Choir, The Concordia College Orchestra, The Concordia Chapel Choir, Mannerchor and Cantabile, and Bel Canto, bring us this magnificent annual live narrated Christmas event in 26 parts. The title cut, "Come to the Living Water," is a dramatic, powerful depiction of the creation of earth, followed by "The Heavens Are Telling of the Glory of God" and the hymn "All Creatures of our God and King." The story of Christ's birth is told with traditional carols like "Ave Maria," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Silent Night," "What Child," "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly," and "I Saw Three Ships," but also included are less familiar pieces like Philipp Nicolai's lovely a cappella piece, "Wake, Awake," Rene Clausen's "Calm On The Listening Ear of Night," Eleanor Daly's "Sunny Bank," the Swedish carol "When Christmas Morn is Dawning," and Knut Nystedt's "Cry Out and Shout." Mostly orchestrally accompanied, the joyous "Come to the Living Water" is the next best thing to being at this wonderful event!

Director Rene Clausen continues to raise the bar of excellence of this world-class choir and the 2006 Christmas Concert was a special series of concerts indeed. David passed away April 16, 2006. Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium” has become a standard for many choirs and the choir here gives this magnificent piece true justice. Over 500 musicians, including the Concordia Choir, directed by Rene Clausen, Concordia College Orchestra, Bel Canto, Chapel Choir, Kantorei, Tintinnabula and Cantabile, tell the story of Christmas in song, segued by a spoken narrative. 22 songs, from Bach's "Sheep May Safely Graze,' and Paul Manz' "E'en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come" to Mary Caldwell's "A Lute Caroll" and Rene Clausen's beautiful "Psalm 23." Mostly orchestrally-accompanied. Wonderful, inspirational music from a fantastic annual event!

"Prince of Peace" is their seventh CD release, and it features the 2002 Concordia College Christmas Concert, conducted by the renowned Rene Clausen. Begun on a small scale in 1927, the event as we know it today began in 1937 under Paul Christiansen, son of St. Olaf College choir director F. Melius Christiansen, when the first giant Christmas mural was added. The recording has 25 parts, some simply orchestra, some a cappella singing, some singing with orchestra, some narrative. For a hint of how wonderful this concert is, listen to "For Unto Us A Child Is Born," from Handel's "Messiah," featuring the orchestra and Choiroutstanding. John Gardner's "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," Stroope's "There Is No Rose of Such Virtue," Pierce's "How Still He Rests," or sinple carols like "Silent Night," a lilting "Pat-A-Pan," "O Hearken Ye," "Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head," or the powerful Haitian carol "Noel Ayisen"it's all amazing.
|
Since 1927, the Concordia College Christmas Concert has grown from an activity of the college's music club into the famed concerts that have become a tradition in the Upper Midwest. Since 1937 the spectacle has featured a giant mural, the huge Concordia Choir and three other choirs, and the Concordia orchestra. There are beautiful photographs of the event in the extensive liner notes. 23 songs, "Venus, the Bringer of Peace," "Watchman, Tell Us Of The Night," "O How Shall I Receive Thee," "Behold A Star From Jacob Shining," "Arise, Shine, for Thy Light Has Come," "Our Father" the list goes on and on of beautiful, soaring music, praising Christ and filling the huge hall with love and light. "Star Of Wonder" is a very special CD of a huge, amazing Christmas event.
|
On the cover of "O Holy Night" we see an awesome giant Christmas mural, with the huge Concordia Choir in front of it, and The Concordia Orchestra in the foreground. This massive Christmas celebration has been an annual event for many years, and it just keeps getting bigger and better. 24 songs, with spoken parts, all accompanied, some familiar ("Angels We Have Heard On High," "O Holy Night," "Joy to the World"), some unfamiliar ( "Of the Father's Love Begotten," "Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah," "Calm on the Listening Ear of Night"), but together in sequence they magnificently tell the Christmas story. "O Holy Night" is a triumph, one of the best of the year!
|
Directed by the contemporary composer Rene Clausen, the Concordia Choir performs frequently, but not exclusively, modern works. This 1999 seasonal recording features several familiar holiday carols, such as Praetorius' "Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming," but its appeal is also in the opportunity to enjoy newer, refreshing pieces, such as "How Still He Rests," with it's solemn oboe accompaniment. The eerie, yet beautiful tonalities of "Go Pretty Child," with its sibilant countermelody, are an example of how the Choir's approach is both delicate and unsettling at once. "Noel Aylsyen (A Haitian Noel)" bounces between the root and fifth, urged along in a springing rhythm, punctuated by handclaps. This refined and energetic modernism is exciting and supremely musical.

Regardless of how one might choose to celebrate Christmas today, we believe that this music can contribute atmosphere, light and hope at the darkest time of the year. Grex Vocalis and 2L have brought together some of the most beautiful Christmas music for a cappella choir. O magnum mysterium the opening words of Midnight Mass at Christmas also express the shepherds’ awe upon seeing the child in the manger. The music of the festive season describes the great contrasts of the nativity. Here we find music inspired by the sense of wonder that the shepherds and the wise men must have felt on coming face to face with the great mystery. Grex Vocalis has given concerts in most European countries and in Japan. Participation in national and international choral competitions has resulted in several first prizes; in Arezzo in 1999 the choir was also awarded ”Il Gran Premio Città di Arezzo” as overall best choir. Grex Vocalis has been awarded the Norwegian “Grammy” for two of its thirteen albums. Grex Vocalis is renowned for its smooth, even sound a combination of well-balanced timbre and shining overtones. Tuning each chord, and to create a unified shaping of each vowel, brings together all the individual voices to form an ensemble sound in which the vocal quality is greater than the sum of its parts. Carl Høgset’s expertise in languages and singing is reflected in his music-making. Through his genuinely musical approach he leads his instrument the choir to moments of indefinable magic; the music must move, and we must be moved by the music.

Drawing upon the rich treasury of 19th and 20th century liturgical hymns and carols of the nativity feast, this unique collection of Orthodox music from Russia and the Ukraine includes several first recordings of music by composers who were suppressed by the Soviet government. At the end of the 19th-century, Alexander Kastalsky founded the world-famous Moscow Synodal School of Church Singing. Bolshevik persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church forced the closing of the school and the disbanding of the choir. Georgiy Izvekov, a priest and well-respected composer of liturgical music, was arrested in 1931 for 'anti-Soviet activities' and was executed by firing squad. Important choral composers in the Ukraine met with similar fates - for example, Vasyl Barvinskyi was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment by the Soviet government. Paul Hillier leads the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in this gloriously atmospheric collection of Christmas music, which begins with the tolling of the bells of St Alexander's cathedral in Tallinn, Estonia.

The ensemble has regained its well-remembered form since Paul French became music director. He has infused it with new vitality, new vision, new purpose.” - Chicago Tribune

Under the direction of recently appointed music director Grant Llewellyn, the Society has expanded its repertoire to encompass a broader range of music, including contemporary works. Their first recording for Avie, "Peace," was one of 2004's best-selling choral CD's appearing for a number of weeks on the Billboard Classical Chart. The Society's newest recording, "All is Bright," celebrates the music of the festive season, combining repertoire from the Baroque era and traditional carols with Christmas works by twentieth century composers including beautiful works by prominent American composers including Ned Rorem, Virgil Thompson, Charles Ives, Jennifer Higdon and Daniel Pinkham. The Beauty of the Society's singing, the uniqueness of the program and the audiophile quality sound give "All is Bright" the same elements that made "Peace" a best-seller with widespread appeal.

The echoes of carols have been heard through Harvard Yard since 1910, when Archibald Davison, newly-appointed University Organist and Choirmaster, and Edward Moore, Prof. of Christian Morals, designed the order of service still used every year. Directed by Murray F. Somerville, and accompanied by The Bach Society Orchestra and an organist, there are 25 songs on ³Carols,² telling the story of Jesus' birth in song. Some favorites"Adeste Fideles," Charles Calahan's ²Come Rejoicing, Praises Voicing,² the spiritual ³Mary Had A Baby,² ³In The Bleak Mid-Winter,² ³Sing Lullaby,² ³Jesus, Jesus, rest your head² and ³Joy to the World.² A beautifully sung and spoken Christmas story. Accompaniment on some songs.

This recording features the contributions of several Canadians to the caroling genre, as composers of new carols and arrangers of old ones. From the perennially beautiful O Come All Ye Faithful and The Holly and the Ivy to the 14th century German Christmas Song, better known as "Joseph, lieber Joseph", this is a lively recording by one of Canada's most loved choirs. Derek Holman's rollicking arrangement of Deck the Halls shows off its insouciance by capturing an unmistakable tipsiness which very likely did accompany the decking of those particular halls. Two of the arranged carols are especially notable: The Huron Carol, known as Canada's first Christmas Carol (1642), is sung here in Robert Anderson's arrangement; and a rare Nova Scotia variant of the Cherry Tree Carol collected by Helen Creighton and arranged by Louis Applebaum.

The Iseler Singers perform carols by Canadian composers commissioned for this recording four original compositions, an arrangement of the Huron Carol and eleven new arrangements of carols from the 1582 collection, “Piae Cantiones” by the Swedish monk, Theodoricus Petrus of Nyland. Published in England in 1853, its timeless melodies have permeated the church music of the English-speaking world. According to Ken Winters’ informative liner notes the only work on the program not commissioned by the Singers is Healey Willan’s miniature masterpiece, Resonet in Laudibus, also from “Piae Cantiones”. Each carol is a highly individual exploration of musical beauty. Exquisite dissonances propel Eleanor Daley’s harmonization of Ave Maris Stella; Eric Robertson astonishes with his symphonic vision of Puer Natus in Bethlehem; Derek Holman’s modal counterpoint to the syncopations of Gaudete bursts with energy; Donald Patriquin’s folk song treatment of Puer Nobis Nascitur is fresh and unexpected; Peter Togni’s arrangement of Corde Natus Of the Father’s love begotten moves with deft assurance from two-part simplicity to a grand multiphonic concluding Amen.

Considered by some to be the finest recording of Christmas carols ever, these original compositions were written by Alfred and primary lyricists Wihla Hutson and Bates G. Burt (Alfred's father). In fact, the carols were initially sent as Christmas messages to Burt family members and friends! Alfred died in 1954 at the age of thirty three, but his legacy has brought joy to untold myriads of listeners ever since. Artists from Nat "King" Cole to the Boston Pops Orchestra and Chorus have popularized what conductor John Williams described as "mini-masterpieces." The sixteen voice a cappella choir directed by arranger Jimmy Joyce (who had worked with Alfred in the Alvino Rey Orchestra) is sprightly and surefooted in their performance, which was recorded in 1963. A sentimental and popular favorite.

A program of Christmas music by American composers, the Kansas City Chorale sings pieces from the late nineteenth century to the present. Composers include Ned Rorem, Norman Dello Joio and Charles Ives. This recording also contains several premier recordings, including "Nativitas" by Jean Belmont. This cycle of eight choral cameos depicts the ceremony of Christmas with texts from the fourth through seventeenth centuries. According to the composer, "The intent in "Nativitas" is to create a musical shape which conveys some of the anticipation, reverence, mysticism and celebration surrounding the Birth of Jesus Christ." This is a great alternative to traditional Christmas recordings.

The perfect way to enjoy the holiday season, little tree features Kantorei's favorite live recordings from their last several Christmas concerts. Featured on recording are two wonderful settings of e.e. cummings' holiday text, 'little tree.' The first, by composer Steven Heitzeg, features the choir accompanied by harp in a soft, contemplative setting. Heitzeg’s composition is contrasted by that of world-renowned composer Eric Whitacre, who sets the text for choir with piano accompaniment in a warm, joyous setting. Also included on the CD are several heart-warming arrangements of familiar holiday carols including ‘I Saw Three Ships,’ ‘Away in a Manger,’ and audience favorite, ‘Silent Night.’ Sure to become a holiday classic, little tree will no doubt usher in the warmth and joy of the Christmas season.

Kantorei began in 1997 as a group of 6 friends who got together to sing Christmas carols. The group has grown to a 32-voice mixed ensemble, attracting some of the best vocal talents. From medieval texts to 20th century tonalities, the Christmas journey begins with "Star in the East," a suite of 3 dramatic Appalachian carols including "Rise Up Shepherd," which was originally published as a slave song in 1867. Herbert Howells' "Long, Long Ago," John Paynter's "The Rose," a lilting, joyous "Sing We Now of Christmas," a lovely soprano solo on "Some Children See Him," a fine "Ding Dong! Merrily On High," Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium," Rutter's sweet "There Is A Flower," a moody "Carol Of The Birds" and Robt. Young's "There Is No Rose of Such Virtue"Çthis collection welcomes the diverse spectrum of Christmas sentiment across miles and centuries. Beautiful and recommended.

A professional choir from Minnesota, the Choir perform selections from a divergent literature. This is a seasonal recording, emphasizing classical compositions, not carols, and is subtitled "The Light Is Come"; loosely defined, the theme is the birth cycle of Christ. Works by Kodaly, Clausen, Poulenc, Bach, Christiansen and others are performed, with the exception of Dave Brubeck's "Gloria," a flamenco arrangement, and the recording's wild card. Several of the tracks are accompanied, such as "This Is The Christ," but with pristine and restrained orchestrations, lovely indeed. In keeping with the CD's seraphic motif, the choir's tone color is one of brilliance and purity.

Every year "Christmas at Luther" outdoes itself in magnificence and beauty.

At Decorah, Iowa's Luther College, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church, music is one of the strongest traditions. The Christmas festival, "Arise, Your Light Has Come" was presented over 4 days in December of 2002 and featured Cantorei, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Norsemen, Nordic Choir, Pike Kor and Children's Choir, the Luther College Symphony Orchestra and the College Organist. 20 pieces, most accompanied, and it's hard to select favorites. The opening piece, the title tune, is stunning, and sets the tone for the triumphant "Joy to the World." Francis Poulenc's "Gloria," Christiansen's "Light Everlasting" Michael Haydn's "Run Ye Shepherds To the Light" and Randall Thompson's a cappella "Nowel," are lovely, as are the gentle "Rocking Carol" and Fissinger's "The Lamb." "And The Glory Of The Lord" from the Messiah, is magnificent, the joyous spiritual "De Mornin' Come," and the tender finale "Hope for Resolution," sung by the Children's Choir, are wonderful.

Certainly one of our most unusual Christmas CD's on offer, these 1956/57 recordings are a blast of refreshment. The first 12 tracks, from "Calypso Holiday," are accompanied, sung in tribal languages as well as English, French and Spanish, and are guaranteed to cheer up anybody's holiday blues! Songs such as "Yellow Bird," "Pig Knuckles and Rice" and "Bamboo-Tamboo" are a wonderful break from the traditional carols, but lest you miss them, "Songs Of Christmas," features a series of medleys, all a cappella and arranged by Norman Luboff. The Norman Luboff Choir were quite popular in the '50's and '60's, too commercial to be considered classical, but nonetheless their renditions of the holiday chestnuts are first-rate.

Seattle-based, 24-strong, mixed vocal ensemble Opus 7 was formed by Loren Ponten in 1992 as a professional vocal ensemble specializing in 19th- and 20th-century a cappella music. The group is known for its imaginative programs, singing unusual or rarely performed works as well as standard choral masterworks. Carols are the jewels of the Christmas music, but the texts of the Magnificat and the Advent antiphons have also inspired composers since the Middle Ages. Here are 21 impressive, lesser-known works, like PeterWishart's "Alleluya, a new work is come on hand," Hugo Distler's "Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming" and "This Flower whose fragrance tender," and Kodaly's "Veni, veni Emmanuel," which show off Opus 7's tremendous range and feeling for the music. There is some small organ accompaniment on a couple of tracks, and excellent, extensive liner notes. We particularly like 7 works from composer John Muehleisen's "The Great "O" Antiphons" ("O Sapientia/O Wisdom," etc.) which was commissioned for and given first performances by the group. John Tavener's "The Lamb," Herbert Howells' "Sing Lullaby," Britten's "Theme-'A Boy Was Born'" and Gerald Finzi's "All This Night"all are wonderfully done. "Dawn" is rare sacred music, perfectly performed!

In this recording, the choir has made Milagros the lead item in a superbly produced and packaged yuletide CD from an emerging Arizona label, Soundset. Jon Washburn conducts the ensemble of Frank Koonce, guitar; Mark Sunkett, percussion; and the choir with select soloists. In this sonically clean and vibrant recording, Milagros is a compendium of yuletide songs lovingly sung in Spanish and English, with running commentary from guitarist Koonce. Robert Tree Cody, on Native American Flute (the instrument of choice this season, it seems), is also heard here, in Washburn's own Noel Sing We, a kind of American Indian-haunted holiday landscape.

Peter Cornelius was born to actor parents and destined from early life to have a career centred on words and music. After early influences from Beethoven and Schubert, and studies of form and the composition of sacred music in Berlin, Cornelius's musical style matured under the tutelage of Liszt in Weimar. On their first meeting Liszt encouraged Cornelius to compose sacred music, however Cornelius then turned to the composition of opera and song whilst developing his natural gift in poetry. Choral works, however, remained an important part of Cornelius's compositions - many with sacred texts. Mention the name Cornelius to most music lovers and their immediate reaction will be 'Isn't he the man who wrote the song heard at Christmas - Three Kings?' Indeed he is and this piece can be heard on track 6 (Drei Könige). However, this disc also explores the other wonderful choral music written by Cornelius. All of these pieces deserve to be heard more!

For over a decade Stephen Layton and Polyphony have been astonishing London audiences with their Christmas concert series: ‘nothing crowns the year like the annual, exhilarating Eve of Christmas Eve performance of Handel’s Messiah by the choir Polyphony under Stephen Layton’. Alongside extravagant oratorio performances, the group has presented a cappella programmes of Christmas music to audiences enthralled by the range of repertoire available. This compact disc brings together music from many of these acclaimed recordings.

This CD is an assortment of Christmas songs from England and America from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. Many of the songs are American shape-note and Shaker hymns as well as Appalachian folk songs. Some of the more familiar tunes include the "Coventry Carol: Lully, lulla, thow little tyne child," "I wonder as I wander" by John Jacob Niles and Emily Poston's sweet version of "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree." These songs are all beautifully sung by the Pro Arte Singers with the University of Indiana Children's Chamber Choir, led by Paul Hillier. This is a wonderful recording of rarely heard gems.

A Dutch quintet, Quink performs both classical works and lighter, contemporary material. The 26 carols featured here are, as the CD's title implies, indeed culled from many Western traditions, though primarily English, French and German, and include the contemporary, as well as the timeless. Charles Ives' "A Christmas Carol" is a quietly lilting 3/4; Walton's "What Cheer" is a herald of joyous news, a musical announcement. The Polish "Berceuse" has a rocking motion, derived from its repeating major second interval. Favorites include "Deck The Hall," "In The Bleak Midwinter" and "The Cherry Tree Carol." Two delicate Bach works round out this understated and soothing CD. Listen to "The Cherry Tree Carol" in Real Audio.

1991 release by Derric Johnson, esteemed director of the Voices of Liberty. Many of the arrangements are also his, and can be recognized by their dramatic codas and lofty soprano range. There are many familiar carols, such as "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Little Drummer Boy," just to name a few - 26 tracks in all. With that kind of variety, there is something for everyone: "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," a spiritual; "Calypso Noel," with that island rhythm; "Pat-A-Pan," in the French classical vein. "Gesu Bambino" is one of the prettiest songs, a distinctive melody, coupled with an easy waltz tempo. Listen to "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "God rest ye Merry Gentlemen" in Real Audio.

Follow-up to previous release by the Regeneration troupe. As on Volume I and II, Derric Johnson's voice-orchestra performs sensational arrangements of carols such as "Joy To The World," "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" and "Deck The Halls." Particularly lovely is "Carol Of The Russian Children/The Sleigh," popularized by the Singers Unlimited. Listen to "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "Carol of the Bells" in Real Audio.

We don’t need to recount Robert Shaw’s credentials as a group leader and director of the Fred Waring Glee Club and The Robert Shaw Chorale, or his list of awards, Grammys, ASCAPs, etc. over his 50+ year career, do we? Good. So, if you were director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus and recording a Christmas CD, what kind would it be? Powerful, monumental and classic of course! We have 18 mostly traditional carols here, "Good Christian Men, Rejoice," "Silent Night," "Patapan," "Fum Fum Fum," "March of the Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," "Angels We Have Heard On High," "The First Nowell," "I Saw Three Ships," "Deck The Halls," etc., along with the Latin hymn "O Sanctissima," Wesley-Mendelssohn’s "Hark!," and Bach’s "Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light." All arrangements are by Robert Russell Bennett. Majestic, triumphant Christmas music!

Twenty-nine carols arranged by Robert Shaw and Alice Parker, and sung by the forty-nine member Robert Shaw Chamber Singers. Many English, but some French, Spanish, Italian, German and the occasional American carol are included. In broad terms, carols were popular songs, and the original definition referred to a type of dance; remember, too, that Christmas was an adaptation of various pagan celebrations, an influence that can certainly be discerned in carols such as "Masters In This Hall," the sprightly rhythms of which are not meant to be listened to sitting down. Robert Shaw's various classical vocal ensembles are considered to be some of the finest in the world, and under his direction, earned many Grammy's and international acclaim. Songlist

The more modern and esoteric of Shaw's Christmas recordings, featuring the "Ceremony Of Carols," a modern suite by Benjamin Britten, comprising 11 tracks, and highlighting two soloists and harp. The contemporary composer, Morten Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" is also included; its simple and graceful melody floats ethereally by. Biebl's "Ave Maria," with its distinctive major/minor tension, Praetorius' "Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming," and Howell's "Sing Lullaby" are other gems, most of which are arranged by Shaw and Alice Parker. The sprightly "Allon, Gay Bergeres" and "While By My Sheep" suggest caroling from door-to-door, the crisp crunch of snow underfoot and rosy-cheeked smiles for all! Listen to "While By My Sheep" in Real Audio.

The remastered A Festival of Carols by the Robert Shaw Chorale and Orchestra, originally recorded in 1957 and 1963, is a timeless classic. It includes four of Robert Russell Bennett's medleys and beautiful a cappella versions of holiday favorites many of which are by Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. Selections include, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," "My Dancing Day" and "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming." This CD will keep your spirits up all season long.

The Rose Ensemble's holiday recording features music from medieval and Renaissance Poland and Czechoslovakia, including motets from the Prague manuscript Codex Specialnik and several lovely spiritual songs extolling the virtues of various Slavic saints and heroes. The Rose Ensemble, based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, handles this material with great skill and grace. Their vocal tone is bright yet warm, and their articulation is clear and crisp. This is interesting music from a part of the world we've just begun to explore. This music is at once familiar and exotic. Listen to "O Beate Stanislae" in RealAudio.

St. Olaf College of Northfield, MN celebrated the first St. Olaf Christmas Festival in 1912, directed by F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the St. Olaf Music Department. The Festival tells the story of the birth of Christ in narration and music, and features The St. Olaf Orchestra, St. Olaf Cantorei, Manitou Singers, St. Olaf Chapel Choir and Viking Chorus, performing both as individual groups and as a massed ensemble. "Light of All Creation" is a 2-CD set, with 15 songs on Disc 1 and 16 songs on Disc 2. Most of the songs are orchestrally accompanied, and there are familiar carols like "All Creatures of Our God and King," "Angels from the Realms of Glory," "O Come, All Ye Faithful," "Good Christian Friends," "E'en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come," the traditional French carol "What is this Lovely Fragrance" and F. Melius Christiansen's lovely "Beautiful Savior." We were pleased to hear some less familiar and new Christmas songs here, such as Richard Dirksen's "Christ, Mighty Savior," Charles Wood's "O Thou the Central Orb," Joseph Clokey's "Two Kings," Dala Melody's "Prepare the Way," Stanford Scriven's "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree," the Nigerian Folk Song "Oba Se Je" and Dale Wood's "Rise, Shine You People." Other favorites are Rene Clausen's "Psalm 100: Make a Joyful Noise," Benjamin Britten's "Procession and Balulalow" (Ceremony of Carols) and Brian A. Schmidt's "Lux Aeterna." Christmas at St. Olaf" is always a memorable, magnificent event, and each year seems to be even more so, but "Light of All Creation" is one of the best we've ever heard!

One of the most enduring musical Christmas traditions, Northfield, Minnesota's St. Olaf College celebrated its 97th Annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival in December of 2008. This massive event features the St. Olaf Choir, St. Olaf Cantorei, Manitou Singers, St. Olaf Chapel Choir and Viking Chorus, performing both as individual groups and as a massed ensemble with the St. Olaf Orchestra. The program is narrated, telling the story of the birth of Christ, "illustrated" by carols, spirituals, classical Christian pieces and original songs such as the final cut, "Beautiful Savior," written by the founder of the Festival and St. Olaf's musical program, F. Melius Christiansen. Presenting this 32-part event in its entirety requires two CDs, beginning with Steven Amundson's "The Gift," and it's hard to pick favorites. Certainly the 6-part "Carols from Around the World" medley needs to be included, the a cappella "How Great Are Thy Wonders," Z. Randall Stroope's accompanied "There Is No Rose," the Basque Carol "The Angel Gabriel," the Irish traditional "Canticle of the Turning," Jester Hairston's "Mary's Little Boy Child," Gian Carl Menotti's "Shepherd's Dance," and the Danish tune "Bright and Glorious is the Sky." A tremendous event, filled with joyous singing and the telling of a wonderful story. Entensive liner notes give us the lyrics to all songs, and details about the music and St. Olaf College.

F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the Music Department at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, planned and directed the first St. Olaf Christmas Festival in 1912. Over the next 96 years the Festival has grown to include, as individual groups and as a massed ensemble, the St. Olaf Choir, the St. Olaf Orchestra, the St. Olaf Cantorei, The Manitou Singers and the Viking Chorus and Chapel Choir. The result of the coming together of all this huge and joyous talent easily fills two CDs, 30 pieces with some narration that tell the story of Christmas, beginning with the all-instrumental "Messiah, Prince of Peace" and ending with F. Melius' gorgeous "Beautiful Savior." It's hard to pick favorites, but "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Handel's "Messiah," Steven Sametz' "Noel!," Carl Schalk's "Before the Marvel of This Night," Donald Fraser's "This Christmastide" (Jessye's Carol), the 6-part medley "Carols for the Choirs" arranged by John Ferguson, F. Melius' lovely "Lullaby on Christmas Eve" and Arthur Honegger's "And God Said: One Day Shall Dawn" (King David) come easily to mind.

In reviews of previous festivals, we often wondered if anything had to be left on the cutting room floor, but with this 2-CD set removes all such thoughts. John Steiner's "God So Loved the World," Caroline Jennings' "Climb to the Top of the Highest Mountain," "Christ is Alive," Founder F. Melius Christiansen's "Lost in the Night," John Ferguson's "Isaiah's Voice" and "Mary's Story and The Magnificat," Paul Webber's "Arise, Shine," Rosephayne Powell's "The Word Was God," Miles Lane's "All Hail the Power," Benjamin Britten's "The Spirit of the Lord"… these beautiful songs are interspersed with narration about the story of Christmas. The St. Olaf Choir was formed in 1911 by Dr. F Melius Christiansen, a Norwegian immigrant. So began a tradition of a cappella choral sacred music that remains strong and vital today. 23 pieces, such songs as Edward Elgar's "Adagio," Christiansen's "Light Everlasting," and "The Song Of Peace," Bartholdi's "There Shall Be A Star," Paulus' "Pilgrim's Hymn," Daniel Gawthrop's "Mary Speaks," Paul Lohman's "What Child," our friend Moses Hogan's arrangement of "This Little Light of Mine," Williams' "Dona Nobis Pacem," Hovland's "Stay With Us" and "Beautiful Savior." The music is that of angels, and the focus of this wonderful CD is what the holiday is all about, the birth of Christ. Excellent!

Those familiar with the works of St. Olaf's know that the choir is part of a long tradition of Scandinavian chorale singing, which often features the compositions and arrangements of the venerated F. Melius Christiansen. One of his arrangements, "O Day Full of Grace," is included here, as well as a seventeenth century spiritual, "O Savior, Throw the Heavens Wide," a Greek vespers (evening prayer service) hymn, "Hail, Gladdening Light" and various other liturgies. There is piano accompaniment on "Gloria in excelsis Deo," and the spiritual, "Here's a Pretty Little Baby." The purity of the tones and blend is all the more amazing, as the recording was done live. Elegant and pristine.

The St. Olaf Choir was formed in 1911 by Dr. F Melius Christiansen, a Norwegian immigrant. So began a tradition of a cappella choral singing that continues under the present direction of Anton Armstrong, himself an alumnus of St. Olaf College. Armstrong has incorporated compositions from other cultures, which comprise a good portion of this CD's content. The Latvian "Ai, Nama Mamina," South-African "Freedom Is Coming" and Chinese Folk Song, "Peng You," among others, offer fresh contrast. Several tracks have unassuming accompaniment, such as the flute on "Water Under Snow Is Weary." The arrangements are conventional in approach and seek to calm, rather than excite. The overall vocal timbre, while grounded in the Western classical tradition, retains a natural unstudied quality.

"What Child Is This" is a wonderful collection of choral and orchestral talent, marvelous music arranged and directed by the finest, culminating in a huge, multi-faceted pageant of celebration and praise!

Proclaimed by classicaltoday.com to be "one of North America's outstanding choirs," the St. Charles Singers offer a bounty of Christmas music from Europe and America in arrangements by John Rutter, David Wilcocks and Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. It includes favorites such as "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Jingle Bells" and Rutter's charming "Donkey Carol." One of the less familiar pieces is a very lively setting by Arvo Part of the Slavonic Ave Maria, "Bogoroditse Djevo." Joining the choir on this CD are members of the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra and guitarist Goran Ivanovic. This is a wonderful collection for the Christmas season.

A Christmas collection that attempts to narrow the gap between the music most performed (that written before 1900) and the vibrant work of living, working composers. 'So gracious' the aptly-named Choral Artists combined beloved classics, fresh and original arrangements of traditional melodies, and some of their favorite (and previously unrecorded) works of Bay Area Composers. Favorites are Laurie Lee's powerful 'Twelfth Night,' Fenno Heath's flawless arrangements of 'I Wonder as I Wander' and 'What Child is This?,' Herbert Bielawa's 'Sweet Was the Song,' William Billings' lilting, joyous 'A Virgin Unspotted,' 'Ave Maria' and 'Silent Night,' both arranged by David Conte, Roger Nixon's 3-part 'Wonders of Christmas' particularly 'Christmas Greeting,' Wm. Dawson's fine spiritual 'Hail Mary!,' John Stephenson's powerful 'Milford' and Ruth Thornhill's 'Snowfall,' arranged by Gene Puerling. The eclectic and engaging 'So gracious' touches, surprises and delights us with every song!

Founded in 1984, Director Hooper and the well-chosen, balanced 24 voices immediately displayed a fresh and elegant sound, using on this first Christmas recording, for example, as wide a palette of moods, colors, rhythms and textures as possible. So although we've heard practically all of these tunes before, the bright arrangements and surprising accompaniment (harp, flute, organ and 'The Ringmasters' bellringers) adds to our appreciation of this 21-song collection. Favorites are a Stephen Paulus-arranged 'We Three Kings,' Heinrich Schutz' beautiful 'Cantate Domino,' Tomas Luis de Victoria's 'Gloria from Missa O Magnum Mysterium,' Praetorius' 'Gaudete Omnes,' Roger Nixon's a cappella 'Green Growth the Holly,' Kirke Mecham's lovely 'Christmas Carol,' Francis Poulenc's 'O Magnum Mysterium,' Anton Bruckner's soaring, angelic 'Virga Jesse' and ''Noel Nouvelet' and 'Deck the Hall,' both arranged by our friend Ken Malucelli. 'Star is a special treat, to be kept in a safe place, so that it can be savored and enjoyed with the coming of the holidays!

A Boy was Born is a work that first made Britten famous, based on a theme and variations of astonishing ingenuity. The Missa Brevis, written for the boys of Westminster Cathedral, is a gem that in some ways looks forward to the War Requiem which came two years later. 69 minutes.

This two discs set includes selections of the best of previous Tallis Scholars Christmas recordings and includes medieval carols, German chorale harmonisations, complete polyphonic settings of the Mass based on Christmas themes, and motets dedicated to Mary and Joseph. Disc one includes the monumental Missa Pastores quidnam vidistis and the motet it parodies, both by the Flemish composer Jacob Clemens non Papa. The style of both the motet and the Mass is typical of Clemens’s conservative interpretation of the Flemish way of composition, unfolding with great deliberation, every clause of words being given its own exposition in the polyphony. It is a classic style, capable of the greatest subtlety and variation of expression, while always inviting the listener to search more deeply into the music. Clemens uses a five-voice choir SSATB except in the final movement where he adds a second bass part. The second disc is dedicated much more specifically to plainchant, and music based on chant. It begins with the contents of the only record The Tallis Scholars have so far made of chant alone. This collection consisted entirely of music written for Christmas, beginning with the complete Mass ‘at cockcrow’ or ‘in gallicantu’. This would have been celebrated at daybreak on Christmas Eve, and is taken from the Sarum rite. It begins with an Introit which moves straight into a troped Kyrie, the trope ‘Deus Creator omnium’ actually replacing the original words ‘Kyrie eleison’ and running to nine invocations (a ‘trope’ could be either a musical or a textual addition to traditional material). The Gloria begins with an intonation from the altar, the bulk of the text following in the syllabic style of the Kyrie. In addition to the Mass included are four hymns proper to the different Offices for Christmas Day: Christe Redemptor omnium is from Matins; Veni, Redemptor gentium is from Vespers; Salvator mundi, Domine is from Compline, and A solis ortus cardine from Lauds. These are amongst the best-known plainchant hymn tunes, which may often be heard today whether in Latin or the venacular. The disc also includes Tallis’s Missa Puer natus est nobis, which is based on the Christmas plainchant of the same name. Listen to "Nowell Sing We" in Real Audio.

Recorded at the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Norfolk, England, this collection of medieval carols, renaissance motets and German chorales by this English mixed ensemble is devout, harkening back to to a time centuries past. Performed with as much allegiance to the original forms as possible, these are simple arrangements, many of which would have been sung by the populus at large, in commemoration of religious occasions. Four settings of "Ave Maria," two attributed to Victoria and one to Des Pres among them, are represented; musically, this ubiquituous homage to the blessed Virgin was distinguished by variations in rhythm, texture and so forth. A peaceful and serene recording. Songlist

The Dream of Herod traces an evolution from dark, brooding introspection to dawning effulgence. Torment and inner violence make way for the mystery of forgiveness and hope in a succession of six brief scenes. Herod, a ruthless, blood-stained king is condemned to restless reflection on the genocide he has inflicted on his own people. Uncertain whether he is lost in sleep or wakefulness, he witnesses a procession of figures that distil the essence of his branded conscience. Imprisoned by the horror of his deeds, he sees his pathway to release, illuminated by the very voices of those he most feared. "Tenebrae is a professional choir, established by former King's Singer Nigel Short to address the market for fine singing in fine buildings. Jacques Villeneuve and James Bowman are among the group's patrons, testimony to Short's networking powers. The conductor stresses the passion and precision generated by his singers and the enjoyment comes from the inspired repertoire selection. Plainsong smoothly covers the joints between works such as Peter Wishart's Alleluya, Hadley's I sing of a maiden and Short and Richard McDonald's effective The Dream of Herod."

Who doesn't know the dramatic and true story of the Von Trapp Family, who escaped from their Austrian homeland under the Nazi occupation? This singing family relocated to America, where they performed and recorded for many years. No novelty act, the ensemble, under the direction of conductor Dr. F. Wasner, sings first-rate a cappella arrangements (with the exception of "Ihr Kinderlein Kommet") of European carols, such as the Italian "La Canzone Di Natale," the Tyrolean "Es Hat Sich Heut Eroffnet" and the Polish "Shepherds Come A-Running." Some of these melodies will be familiar to American audiences, but some will not, which is part of their charm. This 1950's era mono recording is clean, present, and immediate; the vocal blend of the group is so natural and perfectly pitched, it requires nothing to complete it. The 17 mixed voices of Seattle's Tudor Choir, founded by Doug Fullington in 1993, have a focused repertoire dedicated to historically informed concerts and recordings with an emphasis on Renaissance, early American and English choral music. While putting together 1996's "The Shapenote Album," the Choir came across "An American Christmas Harp," a shapenote collection, and were inspired to record "An American Christmas. We won't go into defining shapenote, referring you to the 28-page liner notes, but we will say that it's intensely harmonic and spirited, and often includes fugues. 23 songs, some of which we know by other names, "Antioch," for instance, we know as "Joy to the World." Some favorites: "Shiloh," "Sherburne," "Emanuel, For Christmas," "Redemption, S.M.," "Anthem from Luke," "Joys Seven," "Boston, For Christmas," "Bonnie Doon," "Judea," "London," "Raymond" and "Milford." These now obscure songs were once as familiar to rural Americans as "White Christmas." Shapenote is joyous, celebratory music, fun to sing and fun to hear. Listen to "Shiloh" in RealAudio.

Three-Man, two women a cappella ensemble from Mexico, Voz en Punto is a spirited, talented quintet with fine harmonies, arrangements and a nice, clean sound, and the extensive liner notes have all lyrics and lots of info about the group. Unfortunately for this English speaker, all this information, as well as everything on all the websites about the group we found, is in Spanish. But certain things are pretty clear: There are 18 cuts and most of the material is traditional and sacred music, for example Tomas Luis de Victoria's "Ave Maria," Hernando Franco's "Sancta Maria," "Dios Itlaconantzine," "Jesos de mi goracon," "Eso rigor e repente" and "Mano fasiquivo." Some of it is funny in a manic sort of way; examples of this are Jose Galvan's "Navidad mexicana," "El nacimiento," "Elintercambio" and Son Veracruzano's "El tilingo navideno." The bottom line is, Voz makes fine harmonies, looks young and attractive, has a good sense of humor, and judging by the number of websites about them, has a legion of appreciative fans! Laud of the Nativity |
Long out-of-print, and eagerly sought by collectors, Roger Wagner’s recording of Respighi’s intimate tableau, Laud to the Nativity retuns to the catalogue. This recording comes from a series made by the Roger Wagner Chorale in the 1960’s. Coupled with the Respighi on the original LP recording is Monteverdi’s glorious setting of the Magnificat from the Vespers of 1610. The solos, sung here by Marie Gibson, Marilyn Horne, and Charles Bressler, featured in the Respighi Laud, are fresh and clear, and the choir sings in typical Roger Wagner warmth and strength.

For many years Waring and his Pennsylvanians entertained America with radio and tv broadcasts, as well as stage shows and a multitude of recordings. Culled from the Waring archives, the spontaneity and energy of these live recordings comes through from the first cut. Featured are famous Pennsylvanian soloists and the incomparable Waring Glee Club on these 21 wonderful (all big band accompanied) songs of Christmas. We can't really pick favorites here. The jazzy "Jingle Bells" perhaps, or the Teen Trio's solo on "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer" that segues into manic sound-effect silliness." Certainly the "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow Medley," Frank Davis' soulful solo on "One for the Little Bitty Baby," and Jack Best and Gordon Goodman on "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Oh, and we have to include Jane Wilson's solos on "Away In A Manger" and "Cantique De Noel" (Oh Holy Night). The bottom line is, this is great, classic entertainment by, in our opinion, the premier choral organization of all time. Christmas music just doesn't get any better than this!

This delicate and angelic Christmas collection is as magical as Christmas itself. The Dale Warland Singers, a choral ensemble from Minnesota, performs sixteen classic carols as arranged by Steven Paulus. The collaboration between Warland and Paulus (the latter associated with both Robert Shaw and Neville Marriner), is a serendipitous one indeed. The tasteful accompaniment on 11 of the tracks, such as the lachrymose oboe of "We Three Kings" or the lilting harp that offsets the tension of the melody of "The Ship Carol," are the perfect accessory. "Angels We Have Heard On High" is joyous, the high harmony ascending to an exultant and inspired climax. Listen to The First Nowell in Real Audio.

A forty-voice chorus devoted to the performance of works by twentieth-century composers, this 1995 recording by the Dale Warland Singers is modern classical choral music at its most inspiring and proficient. Sometimes oblique, emphasizing texture over adherence to an immediately recognizable form, works such as the second track, "Izhe Xeruvimy," seem to unfold in a series of layers. The charming and delicate "The Rune Of Hospitality," with the voices gently and broadly undulating against a repetitive acoustic guitar, suggests the enigma of the universe, the expanse of the night sky. "A Rose In Winter" is a seasonal program of mostly modern, classical compositions (20th century). Polyphonic texture, as exemplified by Kverno's "Ave Maria Stella," and its two-part choir, is heightened in intensity by pushing the vocal ranges, from both ends of the audio spectrum. Other compositions, such as John Paynter's "The Rose," use tone clusters (simultaneous discordant pitches) to evoke a sense of stasis, of both rest and motion. The most melodic selection is "O Be Joyful," written and played by guitarist Jeffrey Van; its binary form alternates an adagio tempo with double-time (one other track is accompanied, the rest, a cappella), very suggestive of the Rennaissance. The Dale Warland Singers are one of the most lauded professional choirs, and its interpretations are always of the highest standard. Songlist Listen to Hymn To The Mother of God in Real Audio.
