At least it is if the kind of stuff your parents tried to introduce you to is anything like these terrific vintage vocal harmony groups! The groups you'll find here are the ones who inspired the groups who inspired the ones we love today. Making their music between the Depression and the '50s, these are the greats who made modern, popular harmony, well, popular. This is the music of the golden age of harmony!

Ambassadors of Harmony : ApplauseReview: This is the AOH's third spirited recording, and the fun, excitement and feelings of love and nostalgia that come though it are part of the group's tradition. Included is the "Toy Set" that wowed the audience at the 2001 international competition in Nashville. The centerfold of the liner notes is a full-color shot of the 115-strong group on stage in complete "Toyland" costumes, from clowns and roman soldiers to pandas, cats, sailors, space cadets, Spiderman - you name it. It all says "fun," loud and clear, and that's how the group sings. 12 songs are here: "Applause," "I'm Beginning to See the Light," "Through the Years," "My Honey's Lovin' Arms," the Turtles' "Happy Together," "The Music of the Night," "Toy Song," "Toyland," "Short People," "One Alone," "Tonight" and "Friends." That must have been an unforgettable performance at SPEBSQSA Nashville, and this is an unforgettable CD on many levels - most of all the pure, sweet barbershop harmony that flows throughout. Songlist: Applause, I'm Beginning to See the Light, Through The Years, My Honey's Lovin' Arms, Happy Together, The Music Of The Night, Toy Song, Short People, One Alone, Tonight, Friends Listen to Ambassadors of Harmony : Oh What A Day!Review: Founded way back in 1963 in St. Charles, MO, The 160-strong Ambassadors of Harmony are one of the best, most entertaining men's Barbershop choruses in the world, and they have the Gold necklaces to prove it: SPEBSQSA (Barbershop Harmony Society) Gold in 2004 and 2009! We can tell by their costumes, expressions and wonderful music that (1) these gentlemen are having big fun up there on stage in international competition, and (2) they can sing their collective tails off! We think we can call "Oh What a Day" a best-of collection, mainly because it includes "Seventy-Six Trombones," the Merideth Willson tune which led off their Gold-winning set in July, 2009, but also because every one of these cuts is a stone winner. "America," the sassy Stephen Sondheim/Leonard Bernstein hit from "West Side Story," "Friend Like Me," Howard Ashman/Alan Menken's song from "Aladdin," a cover of the traditional Scottish Air "Loch Lomond" that could break your heart, the wonderfully dramatic theme song from "Man of La Mancha," Ira and George Gershwin's sweet "Love Walked In," the Spanky and Our Gang hit "Lazy Day," Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows," Merle Kilgore/June Carter's Johnny Cash hit "Ring of Fire," and the Edith Piaf hit "If You Love Me, Really Love Me (Hymne a L'Amour)"-these are some of our favorite songs of all time, and the A of H nail every one of them. That's entertainment! Songlist: America, Friend Like Me, They Didn't Believe Me, Fit as a Fiddle, Loch Lomond, Man of La Mancha, Love Walked In, Lazy Days, God Only Knows, Ring of Fire, If You Love Me, Seventy Six Trombones Ambassadors of Harmony : On Top of the WorldReview: This Ambassadors of Harmony's album is the chorus' eighth recording. Boasting premier talent, great versatility, and proven diligence, they shine as brightly as their medals won from numerous International Chorus competitions. This particular effort titled "Sing Sing Sing", the Louis Prima title track, is seasoned with Traditionals of the Jazz, Americana, English and Folk kind. Upon hearing, it is very easy to detect how much fun these guys are having. Sometimes certain music is best seen live, and it is roaringly apparent that this group is an incredible sight to see. These men sing with so much expression, you might feel you are right there in the audience. "That Old Black Magic," made famous by the Suntones, "The Heather on the Hill" by Loerner and Lowe, "Hard Times Come Again No More", by Stephen Foster are songs included in this new release. Directed by David Wright and Gas House Gang's Jim Henry. The Gold went to St. Charles, Missouri's dynamic Ambassadors of Harmony, who sing Rogers and Hammerstein's "I Have Dreamed" and Frank Loesser's "New Ashmolean Marching Society and Student's Conservatory Band," which must be heard to be believed. 2nd Place went to The Northern Lights, with "Make Them Hear You," 3rd to New Tradition Chorus, who recall the minstrel shows with Stephen Foster's "Medley: Camptown Races/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals," 4th to Alexandria Harmonizers" with Gershwin's bluesy "Summertime," and 5th to The Alliance, who give us "The Sunshine of Your Smile." The Alexandria Harmonizers, Great Northern Union, The Alliance and Sound of the Rockies follow -the top 20 Choruses in the world, live from the Finals at Salt Lake City - what could be better? Songlist: Tome After Time, All The World Will Be Jealous Of Me, Strike Up The Band, Crazy-, Mr. Touchdown USA, You Gotta Be A Football Hero Medley (Parody), I Love A Parade, Seventy-six Trombones, When It's Darkness on The Delta, Too Long At The Fair, What Kind Of Fool Am I, Yes Sir, That's My Baby, You Make Me Feel So Young, Bye Bye Blackbird, Side By Side, Because Of You, South Ramport Street Parade, It's You, When you Were Sweet Sixteen, Til Tommorrow, Fortune In Dreams Barbershop Harmony Society : Top Choruses 2007Review: The Barbershop Harmony Society's International Chorus competition, held in Denver, CO in July of 2007 saw California's Westminster Chorus emerge with the gold, singing gems like "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" and "Strike Up the Band/Everybody Step" medley, followed by Ambassadors of Harmony, here singing "They Didn't Believe Me," local favorites Sound of the Rockies, singing "Colorado, My Home," and the Northern Lights, singing "'Cross the Mason Dixon Line." But listening to top-20 finishers like Voices in Harmony sing "The Sunshine of Your Smile," The Alliance's "When It's Nighttime in Dixieland," Atlanta Vocal Project's "Shakin' The Blues Away," Vocal FX's "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street," Cambridge Chord Company's "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans," and the Alexandria Harmonizers' "Happy Feet Medley," makes it clear to us what a tough decision the judges had to make! Songlist: Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring, Strike Up The Band/Everybody Step Medley, They Didn't Believe Me, Colorado, My Home, 'Cross the Mason Dixon Line, Love Songs Medley, The Sunshine of Your Smile, When You Wish Upon a Star, When It's Nighttime in Dixieland, Shakin' The Blues Away, Oh, Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie, When My Sugar Walks Down The Street, Do you Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans?/Basin Street Blues Medley, Happy Feet Medley, Powder Your Face With Sunshine/Smile, Darn Ya Smile Medley, God Bless the Child, Sailing Down the Chesapeake Bay, You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves you, At the Ball, That's All, Good Luck Charm, Time After Time Listen to Barbershop Harmony Society : Top Choruses 2008Review: Music Capitol of the South Nashville, TN played host to the Barbershop Harmony Society's annual International Chorus competition in 2008, and The Masters of Harmony from Santa Fe Springs, CA, took home the Gold, winning their 7th championship! Including the members of 1999 Quartet Champs Fred, whose Clay Hine is director of this band of barnyard barbershoppers, the Chorus placed third in Anaheim. Some of the arrangements, such as "I Can't Give You Anything But Love/L-O-V-E" and the "Jungle Book Medley," are a virtual comic revue, with patter, exaggerated phrasing and silly word play; however, when it's time to get serious - read: sentimental - the Chorus knows how to straighten up and fly, well, right. "Georgia," and "Old Folks At Home" are restrained, stately and graceful. Songlist: It's a Good Day, Beer Barrel Polka, Georgia On My Mind, I Can't Give You Anything But Love / L-O-V-E, You Are My Sunshine, Jungle Book Medley, You Tell Me Your Dream, Steppin' Out Tonight / When Francis Dances With Me, Old Folks at Home, Sh-Boom, Brown Eyes Why Are You Blue, The Apples Medley, I Love You Truly, Chicken Hearted, How Do I Get Out of This Chicken Outfit, The Star Spangled Banner Medley Great Northern Union Chorus : Bound For GloryReview: Twin-Cities-based Great Northern Union, directed since 2002 by Peter Benson, is one of the midwest's most versatile choral groups. Surrounded by musical excellence, the group has a broad repertoire and a beautiful sound, and they add visual presentation to complete the package. "Bound for Glory" is "Gnu's" fourth recording, a special selection of sacred works. 11 songs, "Great Day," Thomas Tallis' "If Ye Love Me," "In This Very Room," "Swing Low/Swing Down Chariot," "God is My Rock," "Nearer My God to Thee/I Need Thee Every Hour," "When I Lift Up My Head," "This Train/When the Saints Go Marching In" and special bonus cut, Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" are particularly nice. An inspirational, beautifully arranged and sung collection from the talented, dynamic Great Northern Union Chorus Songlist: Great Day, If Ye Love Me, In This Very Room, Run, Run, Run, Swing Low / Swing Down Chariot, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, God Is My Rock, Nearer My God To Thee / I Need Thee Every Hour, When I Lift Up My Head, This Train / When The Saints Go Marching In, Ave Maria Great Northern Union Chorus : EvolutionReview: For 15 years running, the pride of Hilltop, MN has taken the stage at the International Championships at the Barbershop Harmony Society, more appearances than any other chorus. "Evolution" is a live "best-of" CD of 17 songs that traces the group's progress through the years, beginning with brash enthusiasm and a clean, aggressive sound like 1989's "I Was Married Medley," 1991's "Rose Colored Glasses" and the wonderful ballad "Forgive Me" (1990). 1992-94 saw a new director and a bigger sound, highlighted by 1993's "Broadway Star Medley." Comedy was the focus from 1995-96, drawing standing ovations for "Forgive Me Parody," "How Could You Believe Me When You Know I've Been A Lawyer All My Life" (1995) and "Politicians Medley" (1996). 1997-2001 featured soulful ballads, "There Goes My Heart" (2000), driving uptunes, "Changes Medley" (2000), and swing numbers like "Paper Doll" (1999). Most of these favorite performances resulted in medals for the GNUC. A dynamic, powerful collection from one of America's best male chorus, recorded live in International competition! Songlist: Pal of My Cradle Days, M-A-Double M-Y, Alabamy Bound, I Was Married Medley, Forgive Me, I'm Sorry I Made You Cry, I'm Looking at the World Through Rose-Colored Glasses, Broadway Star Medley, The Masquerade Is Over, Forgive Me Parody, How Could You Believe Me When You Know I've Been A Lawyer All My Life?, Politicians' Medley, You Keep Coming Back Like A Song, Paper Doll, There Goes My Heart, Changes Medley, My Foolish Heart Hartsmen : Love at First SoundReview: The first song on this recording, "Shenandoah," will tell you that this is a uniquely talented male chorus with some incredible soloists. The Hartsmen, based in Michigan City, Indiana, have given us a real feel-good tape, with soaring leads, rich flowing harmonies, and arrangements that turn a pop song such as "Happy Heart" into something akin to a symphony. Other favorites: "For The Good Times," "She Touched Me," and "Early In The Morning." Give it a listen, you'll probably find that it's Love at..well, First Sound! Songlist: Shenandoah, Macshla, Happy Heart, Here's That Rainy Day, For The Good Times, Tomorrow Is My Friend, If, Lost In The Stars, She Touched Me, Early In The Morning, A Million Miles Away Behind The Door, The Song Is Ended But The Melody Lingers On Listen to Heart of Texas Chorus : Great American CowboyReview: Pride of San Marcos, TX, the 68-strong all-male Heart of Texas Chorus treats us to a fine collection of 14 Cowboy tunes. Some of our favorites are Cole Porter's classic "Don't Fence Me In," Barbershop quartet Sterling singing Garth Brooks' inspiring "The River," hot arranger Jay Giallombardo adds much-needed lyrics to Rossini's "William Tell Overture," Irving Mills and Luchy Millinder's "Ride, Red, Ride," The Sons of the Pioneers' "Cool Water," "If They String Me Up I'll Never Live It Down/Back in the Saddle Again Medley," the traditional folk tune "Home on the Range" and "Texas Medley." The title tune, sung by the Chorus with Sterling, is accompanied by BuffaloGrass and "Texas (When I Die)," sung by Barbershop quartet Four Brothers, has a little violin, and "Cool Water" some guitar-the rest is richly-harmonied a cappella. A big, fun, testosterone-soaked album from the Heart of Texas! Songlist: Great American Cowboy, Don't Fence Me In, The River, Bury Me Not on the Lone Praire, William Tell Overture, Texas (When I Die), Shenandoah, Ride, Red, Ride, I'm A Wild And Wooly Son of the West, Cool Water, If They String Me Up I'll Never Live It Down/ Back In The Saddle Again Medley, Wahoo, Home On The Range, Texas Medley Heart Of Texas Chorus : Inspiration From The HeartReview: Cindy Hansen had been coaching men's and women's choruses and quartets since 1981 when she was a student at Western Michigan University. In 1983 she was asked to coach the West Towns Chorus, who went on to be International Champs. She now has a "who's who" list of gold medal-winning quartets and choruses on her resume. The changes she institutes range from sound and arrangements to creating "visual packages" for the group in performance, and the Heart of Texas Chorus has received many of her "enhansenments." The result is a spirit, a sound, a "juice" that is pure entertainment, but don't take our word for it-listen to the HOTC on these 20 songs: "There's a Meeting Here Tonight," "Operator," Saturday Evening Post's "Gospel Medley," an unbelievable arrangement of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," a dynamic "All Rise," Hot Pursuit's arrangement of "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands," Vanguard's "When There's Love at Home," HOT Lite's "Ain't a That Good News"... we could go on and on, but we trust that excellence rises to the top in the Barbershop world, so just listen to "Inspiration from the Heart," and become a believer in Cindy Hansen and the men of the Heart of Texas Chorus. One more thing, don't miss bonus tracks "Yes, Sir, That's My Baby" and "I'll Be Seeing You!" Songlist: There's A Meetin' Here Tonight, Operator, Gospel Medley, All Rise, Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Let There Be Peace On Earth, He's Got The Whole World in His Hands, Swing Down Chariot, When There's Love At Home, Ain't A That Good News, Sweet Hour of Prayer, I Woke Up This Mornin' Feelin' Fine, The Lord's Prayer, God Bless The USA, Auld Lang Syne, Armed Forces Medley, Mississippi Squirrel Revival Heart Of Texas Chorus : The BeginningReview: "The Beginning" is the Heart of Texas Chorus' first recording after their founding in 1994 by 20 men who wanted to form a quality barbershop chorus in the "Central Texas Corridor" from Georgetown to San Antonio. Their members ranged in age from 14 to 64, and they were lucky to have a director of the caliber of seasoned barbershop veteran Eddie Martinez, formerly of the Houston Tidelanders. The 31-strong group (at that time) started winning Barbershop Harmony regional competitions right away, and competing in the Ohio "Buckeye International" Contest. 14 songs, with guest performers Soundtrax, the top-ten Sweet Adelines quartet, who join the Chorus on "And So to Sleep Again," "Oh, You Beautiful Doll," "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and "Orange Colored Sky." Other Barbershop standards show off the HOTC's smooth, dynamic sound: "Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella," "Swinging on a Star," "Are You Lonesome Tonight," "In That Great Getting' Up Mornin'," "Smile," "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive" and "I'm Gonna Live Till I Die." Good early stuff from a powerful, dynamic chorus from Texas! Songlist: Let A Smile Be Your Umbrella, Swinging On A Star, Are You Lonesome tonight, Lulu's Back In Town, Softly As I Leave You, In That Great Gettin' Up Mornin', Smile, Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive, And So To Sleep Again, Oh, You Beautiful Doll, In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning, Orange Colored Sky, The Lords Prayer, I'm Gonna Live Till I Die Heart Of Texas Chorus : With A Song In My HeartReview: The HOTC has grown in many ways since its founding in 1994, Ron Black now at the helm as Music Director, growing to 59-strong and recently placing 12th in the Barbershop Harmony Society International Chorus Competition in Salt Lake City. 17 classic tunes: "Smile, Darn Ya, Smile," "Fly Me to the Moon," "Always," "Goodbye, Dixie, Goodbye," "Oh, You Beautiful Doll," "Dream," "Glow Worm," "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Floatin' Down to Cotton Town," "If I Had My Way," "You Make Me Feel So Young," and "With A Song in My Heart." Sophisticated arrangements, smooth, ringing chords, feel-good selections-it adds up to great entertainment from a top-drawer men's chorus deep in the Heart of Texas! Songlist: Smile, Darn Ya, Smile, Fly Me To The Moon, Old St. Louie, Amor, Always, Goodbye , Dixie, Goodbye, Oh, You Beautiful Doll, Dream, Glow Worm, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Floatin' Down To Cotton Town, Sam, The Accordion Man, If I Had My Way, Orange Colored Sky, You Gotta Have Skin, You Make Me Feel So Young, With A Song In My Heart Masters Of Harmony : California Gold RushReview: On July 6, 1996, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the MOH chorus, under the direction of Dr. Greg Lyne, captured first place gold medals in SPEBSQSA's International Chorus Competition for the third straight time. In addition, Nightlife, a quartet from the ranks of the chorus, won the gold in the International Quartet Contest. The Santa Fe Springs, CA-based group took home all the gold there was to be had, and these 13 great tunes show us why: "All Aboard for Dixie Land," "Brother Can You Spare A Dime," "Whatever Happened to Melody," "Porgy and Bess Medley," "Love Is A Many Spendored Thing," "Ragtime Medley," "Alexander's Band Medley," "Just A Kid Named Joe," "My Romance," "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," "Basin Street Blues," "'Cross The Mason-Dixon Line" and "Love Me And The World Is Mine." This recording is no exception for those of us who weren't fortunate to be present when The Masters of Harmony, under the direction of Dr. Greg Lyne, won the gold medal and were acclaimed International Chorus Champions in both l990 and l993. Masterpiece begins with a long fascinating medley of nine Jerome Kern songs with an announcer giving brief historical notes in between the excerpts. This is a great recording. "Puttin' On The Ritz" and "Ya Got Trouble" are likely to become standards by which other choruses measure their progress, in fact this whole album will! Songlist: Jerome Kern Medley, Puttin' On the Ritz, There Used to Be a Ballpark Right Here, Ya Got Trouble, When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, Deep River, I Had Someone Else Before I Had You/ Who' s Sorry Now?, You Keep Coming Back Like a Song, How to Build a Chorus, The Joint Is Jumpin', Make Our Garden Grow, Soliloquy Listen to Masters of Harmony : PortraitReview: "Portrait" is a strong new collection from the dynamic, 7-time BHS International Chorus champions Masters of Harmony. 15 finely-crafted tunes including some of our favorites "Go Down Moses, "I Will Go Sailing No More," "Good Luck Charm" and "Sold" (sung with 2008 BHS Quartet champs OC Times), "Stand By Me," "Nice 'N Easy" (sung with 2008 Far Western District Quartet champs Masterpiece, "Yona From Arizona," "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" and "Portrait of My Love Medley." The Masters, directed by Michigan Jake member Mark Hale, has a wonderful, complex sound that adds new dimensions to these classic songs. Enjoy one of Barbershop's great champion choruses's. Songlist: Go Down Moses, I Will Go Sailing No More, Blues in the Night, Roll On, Mississippi, Good Luck Charm, For Good, Stand By Me, Bach Fugue in D Minor, Nice 'N' Easy, Wonderful One, Yona From Arizona, Time After Time, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, Sold, Portrait of My Love Medley Listen to Masters Of Harmony : ShowtimeReview: All American Barbershop ensemble singing at its finest, this chorus has some sort of compulsion to win gold medals in competition - four golds so far! "Showtime" has a Hollywood film medley and patriotic medley - both arranged by then-director Dr. Greg Lyne - as well as a line-up of barbershop "hits" that don't quit. "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "Old St Louie," and "Basin St. Blues" (the latter featuring the Masters Of Dixieland Band, who will convert the most cantankerous skeptic to the virtues of the saxophone), are just a few. Though over 140 in number, the Masters nonetheless are as one voice, one breath. Songlist: Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Floatin' Down to Cotton Town, Miss You, Old St. Louie, Basin Street Blues, The Mardi Gras March, Old Fashioned Girl in a Gingham Gown, Patriotic Medley, When Day Is Done / Mississippi Mud, Just a Closer Walk With Thee, I Believe, Hollywood Film Medley Masters of Harmony : The Dream is Carried OnReview: What a treat! Two gold-medal winning choruses on one CD. As both choruses are based in the LA area they decided to join up and record a CD together so we have The Masters of Harmony and the Westminster Chorus taking turns singing some great barbershop music. These sixteen tracks show exactly why these are two of the top male choruses of the day with a powerful yet refined sound that clearly demonstrate the talent of the singers and the respective directors. The wide variety of songs are bound to please all. Songlist: Get Happy, Precious Lord, Stand By Me, O Love That Will Not Let Me Go, Stars and Stripes Forever, Hallelujah, No More Sorrow, Mary, Did You Know?, Song Of America, Great Day, For Good, Lux Arumque, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Go Down Moses, Ave Maria, The Dream Is Carried On Listen to Masters Of Harmony : The Way We WereReview: For the 15 years of its existence, The Masters of Harmony has been the toast of the barbershop chorus world, winning the coveted SPEBSQSA gold medal five times-whoops, make that six with their 2005 triumph in Salt Lake City! This, and "The Way We Were" are proof that the best keep getting better. A walk down memory lane from their winning performances under 3 directors, Mark Hale, Jeff Oxley and Brett Littlefield, this collection of 14 winners also includes signature songs from the Masters' four international champion quartets, Nightlife, Revival, Michigan Jake and Gotcha!, all with close ties to the group. Al Jolson's "California, Here I Come" tops the bill and begins like a train getting up to steam, Sammy Cahn's "All the Way" segues into a Southern trilogy, "The Birth of the Blues," "Song of the South" and a wonderful "Here Comes the Showboat;" "Singin' In the Rain Medley," "Make 'Em Laugh," "That's How Rhythm Was Born," the heart-tugging title tune, "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" (surprisingly with orchestra, saxophone and piano)--the hits just keep on coming. The "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" end this powerful collection on just the right note. Our congrats to the M of H for their recent win at SLC, and for bringing us this "best of the best" CD! Songlist: California, Here I Come, Witchcraft, All The Way, The Birth Of The Blues (Nightlife), Song Of The South, Here Comes The Showboat, This Ole House (Revival), Singin' In The Rain Medley, Make 'Em Laugh, That's How Rhythm Was Born (Michigan Jake), The Way We Were, What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?, Battle Hymn Of The Republic (Gotcha!), Stars and Stripes Forever Midwest Vocal Express : New Orleans DecoupageReview: Pride of Greendale, Wisconsin, the 58-strong men's a cappella chorus Midwest Vocal Express, brings us a nostalgic tribute to New Orleans, with a number of excellent guest quartets, Checkmate, JACKPOT!, Breaking News and Nightwatch, who blew us away more than once at the Harmony Sweepstakes Finals. Some favorites among these 16 songs are "Tin Roof Blues," the title tune (New Orleans Decoupage 'Way Down Yonder in New Orleans"), "Original Dixieland One-Step," "You'll Never Walk Alone," "Ja-Da," "Where the Southern Roses Grow," "Calypso Medley," "Alexander's Band is Back in Dixieland," "Zip-A-Dee Dooh-Dah," "Polka Medley," "I'll Fly Away," "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Teen Medley" and "Irish Blessing." But there's not a weak cut, dry eye or untagged heartstring here. "New Orleans Decoupage" is a breath of fresh, Southern air from one of the Midwest's finest men's choruses! Beginning in 1987, when they placed 4th in SPEBSQSA's International Chorus competition, they medaled every year since then, including winning the gold medal in Nashville in 2001. So here we have the best male chorus in the world, nailing arguably some of the best songs in the world (most recorded live): "The Star-Spangled Banner," "This Is My Country," "America the Beautiful," "God Bless the USA," "There Is Something About a Soldier," "White Cliffs of Dover," "Cities of America Medley" (which includes "Chicago, My Kind of Town," "Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis," "Gary, Indiana," "Mention My Name in Sheboygan," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" and "New York, New York"), "God Bless America," "Tribute to World Peace" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (piano accompanied and sung with the Northbrook Melodeers women's chorus). "Powerful" can only begin to describe the NTC, their music and this inspiring CD! Songlist: The Star Spangled Banner, This Is My Country, America, The Beautiful, God Bless The USA, There Is Something About A Soldier, White Cliffs Of Dover, Cities Of America Medley, God Bless America, Tribute To World Peace, Battle Hymn of the Republic Listen to New Tradition Chorus : BandstandReview: 1982 was a banner year for Northbrook, IL, as it was the year a Barbershop legend, The New Tradition Chorus, was founded, directed by Jay Giallombardo. Varying in size from 95 to 138 men, TNTC won their first SPEBSQSA medal in 1987, which began a remarkable streak of success in international chorus competition. They medaled every year, including a record 5 Silver medals in a row, until they finally grabbed the Gold in 2001! "Bandstand" is generous collection of 13 tunes and medleys that will warm your heart as well as that of your favorite jukebox, some of our favorites are the medleys: "50s Medley," "Jersey Boys Medley" containing the hits "Let's Hang On," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Working My Way Back to You" and "Walk Like a Man" and "Smile Medley;" "Bandstand Boogie," Roger Miller's crossover hit "King of the Road," The Turtles' bubblegum classicHappy Together," John Phillips' sweet Mamas and Papas anthem "Monday, Monday," Len "non/McCartney's "Lady Madonna," Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow" and "Wind Beneath My Wings/You Raise Me Up" by Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar. Director Giallombardo does most of the arrangements for his thoroughbred competition and performance band, and every cut is an entertaining, powerful, richly harmonic winner. Treat yourself to "Bandstand" by the continually amazing New Tradition Chorus! Songlist: Bandstand Boogie, 50's Medley, King Of the Road, Unchained Melody, Happy Together, Jersey Boys Melody, Daydream, Monday, Monday, Lady Madonna, All The Gold In California, Over The Rainbow, Smile Medley, Wind Beneath My Wings / You Raise Me Up New Tradition Chorus : BroadwayReview: In 1981 a new barbershop chorus was formed in the Chicago area to foster the love of barbershop harmony and incidentally to focus on musical excellence as part of the expressed goal of becoming one the best male a cappella chorus in the world. With that goal in mind, New Tradition Chorus began competing in 1982 and became the Illinois District Champions in 1987. That success qualified them for the International Competition. From that year they have never failed to win a medal and have been Silver Medalists for the last five years. From the very beginning, the music director has been the prolific writer and arranger, Jay Giallombardo. Performances in the Chicago area include appearances at conventions, outdoor festivals, banquets and political events, including performing at the Democratic National Committee Media Party, on national TV for Chicago Bears football games, at Chicago White Sox baseball games and in Canada and Ireland (for the St. Patrick's day festivities in 1997.) The annual Spring Show production has 3 performances and presents the chorus and chapter quartets set in a particular theme (e.g. Broadway, Irish, Patriotic, Western). In addition to singing, the members write, produce, direct, and design lighting and scenery for these shows. As a result it was natural to produce a recording of Broadway show tunes. You'll hear music from State Fair, Les Miserables, Carousel, Phantom of the Opera, Paint Your Wagon, Sound of Music, West Side Story, Cats, and more, sung by this chorus who has not achieved their goal to be the best in the world just yet. To date they are 'only' one of the best! Songlist: It's A Grand Night For Singing, Bring Him Home, Do You Hear the People Sing?, If I Loved You, Phantom of the Opera / Music of the Night, They Call the Wind Maria, Climb Every Mountain, There's No Business Like Show Business / Anoth Op'nin', Another Show Medley, West Side Story Montage (Tonight, America, Maria, Somewhere), Oklahoma!, Memory, There Is Nothing Like A Dame, Tradition / Sunrise Sunset, The Impossible Dream New Tradition Chorus : Sentimental JourneyReview: Northbrook, IL's 95-strong NTC, founded in 1982 as a performance and competition chorus and the intention of becoming one of the best men's choruses in the world, reached that goal in 2001, when, after 8 years of second place medals, they won the coveted gold. Director and arranger Jay Giallombardo, who was a charter member of the group and a member of SPEBSQSA since 1968, has made his devotion to musical quality a guiding light for New Tradition since its inception. That smooth, powerful quality is clear on all of "Sentimental's" 13 classic cuts: "Big Band Days," "Tuxedo Junction," "Taking a Chance on Love," "Skylark," "Everything Old Is New Again," "Do Nothin' 'Till You Hear from Me," "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby," "Java Jive," a stunning "The White Cliffs of Dover" (recorded live at the 2001 SPEBSQSA Chorus Finals), a marvelous "Gershwin Medley," "Imagination," the lovely title tune, and a live bonus track, "dedicated to the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001." "Sentimental" is a nostalgic treat from start to finish by one of the best choruses on the planet. Songlist: Big Band Days, Tuxedo Junction, Taking A Chance On Love, Skylark, Everything Old Is New Again, Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Java Jive, The White Cliffs of Dover, Gershwin Medley, Imagination, Sentimental Journey Listen to New Tradition Chorus : Silver LiningsReview: The New Tradition Chorus, from the Chicago area of Illinois, have been International Competition Silver Medalists for the last six years (including Anaheim '99). This CD was inspired by the Chorus' trip to Ireland in 1997, and the opening track is an "Irish Montage," evoking their warmly-received performances there. The thirteen-member "Next Generation," a subsidiary group of the Chorus, performs "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" and "Calendar Girl," while the Sweet Adelines Championship Chorus The Melodeers contribute their voices for "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic," recorded live in 1995. The "Cities Of America" medley is an entertaining whistlestop tour; anyone who has seen the New Tradition Chorus live understands that, along with their musical excellence, the show's the thing! Barbershop music has always leant itself well to a Disney song so what a treat it is to have a recording by one of the top barbershop choruses in the nation that focuses entirely on Disney movie songs. Old classics like "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and the wonderful "The Bare Necessities" are included as well as more recent songs such as "Beauty And The Beast" and Elton John's "Can You Feel The Love Tonight". This is already our favorite barbershop chorus recording and think it will soon become yours also. The rest are known as "hapa haole" (Hawaiian with western influences) and are exemplified in the "Hapa Haole Medley" sung by Tropical Blend. The medley combines "Pearly Shells" and "Tiny Bubbles" which are the two best known English versions of Hawaiian songs. There's a humorous look at Hawaii from a tourists viewpoint in the "Tour Of The Islands Medley." Fine singing will take you on a fascinating tour of the 50th state. Take it today! Since then they have won 11 Gold Medals! There's a classic Wurlitzer jukebox on the cover of "VM Bandstand," and if you love the Doo-Wop and Pop tunes that used to cost a dime or quarter on such a machine, this collection is for you. Although we need to warn a cappella purists that some of these tunes are rock-band accompanied, there is great stuff here-"Bandstand Boogie," "Turn Around, Look at Me," "50s Medley" (with "Lollipop," "Rock Around the Clock," "Sh-Boom" and others), "Blue Moon," "Jersey Boys Medley" ( with "Let's Hang On," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man"), "All the Way," "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" and others. VMC's glorious, rolling harmonies soar on some of our favorite inspirational songs: "You Raise Me Up," "Somewhere Medley," "Hymns of the Cross" medley, "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "Deep River," "It Is Well With My Soul," "He/I Believe Medley," "When You Wish Upon A Star," "The Holy City" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." Three of the songs, "How Great Thou Art," "Love At Home" and "Nearer My God To Thee," feature both, and the remaining eleven tracks allow each ensemble to showcase their unique talents. As the Tabernacle Choir's director, Dr. Jerold Ottley, explains, the choir sings with "an openness of resonance, and the Majority sings primarily with forward resonance. That is, they sound brighter." Most of the songs are inspirational (and about half are organ accompanied), though "Danny Boy," "Home On The Range," "Windows Of the World" and Barry Manilow's "One Voice" round out the set. Both groups have a rich and full tone that is at the same time transparent and weightless; ensemble singing at its best! Songlist: How Great Thou Art, Ode To Music, Sweet Hour Of Prayer, The Long Day Closes, I'll Walk With God, Suddenly You're Older, Love At Home, I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked, The Windows Of The World, One Voice, The Lost Chord, Danny Boy, Home On The Range, Nearer My God To Thee |
