Joni joined Sweet Adelines International (Sweet Adelines, Inc., at the time) in 1958. Since that time, she distinguished herself while making a major impact on virtually every aspect of this craft.
As director of the Verdugo Hills Chorus (Glendale, CA) from 1966 to 1986, Joni led the chorus to eight regional championships and five international medals. As a quartet performer, she won one bronze (1973) and two silver (1975 and 1976) medals as baritone of the Chansonniers. She sang tenor with 4 for the Show, winning the coveted International Championship in 1984. Joni also won one silver and three gold medals as a member of the acclaimed Rich-Tone Chorus, which she joined in 1989. In 2000, the Rich-Tones honored her with a lifetime membership in the chorus.
Joni excelled in the judging program, as well, attaining the rank of Certified Judge in three of the four categories-Music, Sound, and Expression. Although it has undergone minor revisions since first publication, she was the original author of the current Judging Category Description Booklet. Joni was appointed to the International Faculty upon its formation in 1963, and has attained the highest rank available, that of Certified International Faculty.
Joni's arrangements of barbershop music are prized throughout the world. Again, she literally "wrote the book" on arranging, with publication in 1970 of How to Arrange Barbershop Harmony. Her current plans include publication of a revised and updated edition in the near future. Based on the quality of her arranging and her contributions to published music, Joni is one of four members to attain the highest ranking available, that of Master Arranger.
As a coach, Joni's busy coaching schedule attested to the fact that her talents were world renowned. She coached many gold medal quartets, including the Metropolitans, High Society, Panache, Rumors, and a cappella Gold. Among the choruses she coaches are the award-winning Rich-Tones, San Diego, Harborlites, Pacific Sound, and Toast of Tampa.
All these factors contributed to President Kathy Carmody's naming of Joni as the second member to win Sweet Adelines International's Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Competition and Convention in 1999. Sadly Joni passed away in 2009.
