Yes, many singers regard warm-ups as a monotonous requirement, a trivial exercise, or an unnecessary delay before the actual rehearsal starts. But it doesn't have to be this way! Reinvent your routine with this innovative approach that leads the way to more meaningful and diversified warm-ups. This book is filled with uncomplicated melodies that are quickly learned, and then turned into multiple-part exercises by singing in canon or stacked parallels. An exemplary practice that invites developed groups to focus on higher listening and ensemble skills. Online access to MP3 demos of every exercise is included.

It contains, among others, a vocal arrangement of Brahms'' Hungarian Dance No. 5 as well as "She's Leaving Home" by the Beatles or Piaf's "La vie en Rose." In the last decades, Sund arranged all the pieces for his chamber choir "Orphei Drangar." Now these successful arrangements, most of which have been released on CD, are available for men's choir. Some of the arrangements contain piano accompaniment and solos. The program can be complemented by choreographies or scenic performances.

Review: Here's a perfect set of warm-ups for the choral ensemble that's designed to enhance and stimulate the growth of each member's vocal and choral ability. Thinking of the warm-up as a mini voice lesson, you can reinforce concepts with consistent encouragement, criticism, problem-solving and praise. Each exercise includes a notated keyboard accompaniment with multiple modulations and professional recordings of a rhythm section and singers performing each drill on the enclosed CD.
Review: Inspired by Debra Spurgeon's pioneering book Conducting Women's Choirs, this companion resource, compiled and edited by Donald Trott, brings together the expertise of eighteen acknowledged authorities on men's choirs. Conducting Men's Choirs addresses the unique challenges, considerations, and joys of making music with male singers.
The book is organized into three major sections, the first of which contains historical essays on male choirs in the United States. The chapters in this section span a range of relevant topics, including glee clubs in colleges and universities, an examination of some of the nation's most esteemed and accomplished male choirs, and the role of male community choruses in America.
The second section explores key aspects of working with male singers that are vital to the success of any conductor of male choirs. A thorough discussion of repertoire for men's choirs rounds out this resource in the book's third and final section. Chapter authors explore men's choir repertoire from a variety of angles: Renaissance music, works by Schumann, Canadian repertoire, and the music of Veljo Tormis. Extensive repertoire listings with hundreds of titles for men's chorus are also provided for quick and easy reference.
Songlist: How to start a male choir and recruit male singers, Working with middle school boys, Developing adolescent voices, Pedagogical considerations for male voices, Procedures for improving intonation, Standing formations, Warm-ups, Women conductors of male choirs, How to arrange and compose for men's choirs
Review: Why don't classical musicians improvise? Why do jazz players get to have all the fun? And how do improvisers develop such fabulous technique and aural skills?
With this book, Jeffrey Agrell and Patrice Madura Ward-Steinman open the door to improvisation for all non-jazz musicians who thought it was beyond their ability to play extemporaneously. Gently, step by step, Agrell and Madura lead us through a series of games rather than exercises. The game format takes the pressure off of classically trained musicians, steering them away from their fixation on mistake-free performance and introducing the basic concepts of playing with music itself instead of obsessing over a perfect rendition of a written score.
States authors: "Playing duets from the ink is fun and full of musical vitamins, but it needs a complimentary aural approach to develop all-around musicianship." Vocal Improvisation Games for Singers and Choral Groups provide that complementary approach.
Songlist: Warm-Up Games, Rhythm Games, Melody Games, Harmony Games, Aural Games, Depiction Games, Style Games, Timbre Games, Dramatic Games, Text Games, Composition Games, Miscellaneous Games
Review: This important resource is the culmination of a lifelong dream of author Melissa M. Mills to share the wisdom of many of the most influential community children's choir directors in North America, especially those responsible for pioneering and shaping this wonderful art form.
Across two volumes, Mills collects and organizes interviews with 23 expert conductors. Through their conversations, Mills gleans wisdom about their training, teaching philosophy, motivations, and practice, and provides a special focus from each conductor on topics ranging from assigning vocal parts and teaching healthy tone production to planning rehearsals and developing independent musicians.
Teachers of young singers will find a broad and deep exploration of the issues that conductors must consider, leading to more purposeful instruction and increased effectiveness in the choral setting. The philosophies and principles discussed in these books offer insights for teachers of the youngest singers through teenagers, in all choral settings (children's choirs, church choirs, and elementary, middle, and high school choirs).
The growing interest in both community children's choirs and choral conducting philosophy makes Working with Young Singers a timely and invaluable resource for all choral music educators.

Review: Boys from South London with 65 million views on YouTube make up the choral group Libera and are normal kids aged 7 to 16 years. The music they produce is truly extraordinary. In addition to their annual tour to America, Libera appearances include The Today Show, Tonight Show, PBS, NBC, Kennedy Center Honors, Yankee Stadium Papal Mass and many more. Their new album 'Christmas Carols With Libera' is available on CD plus digital formats. Taking on the mellow and the more upbeat songs in this collection, the boys of Libera had great fun. The likes of 'Ding Dong Merrily On High' require real precision, as well as purity. Many of the tracks were recorded during a group 'retreat' to a rehearsal space in an old school, this allowed a true live feel to the process. The boy who took the lead vocal on 'The Snowman' had just turned 9 years old, whilst the introductions to the French 'Noel Nouvelet' and the Irish 'Wexford Carol' are both handled by native French and Gaelic speakers, Libera is as polyglot as ever. The distinctive sound of Libera has travelled the world in the last few years. The group's albums have topped both mainstream and classical charts in many countries, and their recordings hold their place in top 10s alongside major artists. Libera's unique sound has endeared the group to fans all over the world, particularly in the USA, the UK, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan, where their CDs top the mainstream and classical charts and where they pack concert halls appearing in their trademark flowing white robes on imaginatively lit stages. "When I heard them sing... It does remind me a lot of The Beach Boys, but actual boys" - Brian Wilson

Review: The Christmas concerts of Chanticleer are an institution in the USA, and international tours and recordings have made the brilliant male-voice ensemble, based in San Francisco, familiar to audiences all over the world. As Gramophone has written, "Chanticleer, it seems, can sing just about anything," and Chanticleer sings Christmas bears that out, embracing traditional carols and gospel numbers, plainsong, European and Mexican music of the 16th and 17th centuries, and composers and arrangers of the present day.

Review: Singing together binds us together. From the Protestant Reformation in Europe during the 1500s to the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, there have been countless moments in history when songs have united nations, cultures and causes. This is still the case in today's world. Finding Harmony is evidence that music has always been our common language. A unique collection of pieces that span the globe - including music that's too often forgotten - each song is the key to a powerful true story about who we are and how we've got here. Together, Finding Harmony proves how deeply we can be moved by all kinds of stories when songs connect us to them, and to each other.

Review: This 5-movement, multi-media, Choral Drama honors one of the great heroes of the emancipation era. Scholars have no idea how these spirituals were performed before the Civil War, but they agree that there was probably very little European influence. Dr. Kean's goal was to compose and arrange music in a style that is evocative of the enslaved Africans' frame of mind based upon their west African musical heritage and in their sociological context. He chose to accompany the spirituals with kalimba (thumb piano) to honor the west African tradition of connecting with ancestors and the marimba to sound like the west African balafon. Medium to difficult.
Review: The Sacred Veil is a 12-movement work and the most recent collaboration between Eric Whitacre and poet/lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri telling a story of life, love and loss. Silvestri's wife, Julie, died of ovarian cancer at age 36 in 2005, leaving two young children. Including texts from Silvestri, Whitacre and Julie herself, the intimate, compelling score tells a story of courtship, love, loss and the search for solace. Although inspired by this extraordinary and moving friendship, the piece does not mention Julie by name and shares a very human journey-one that so many of us can relate to. The Sacred Veil has been recorded with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Jeffrey Zeigler (cello), Lisa Thomas (piano) and Eric Whitacre (conductor).

Review: "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" - Jeff Funk's choral adaptation of this selection from The Nutcracker Suite has been a huge success in its original SATB setting and will provide wonderful lighthearted programming for your next holiday concert. "Waltz of the Flowers" - Bring a touch of the Nutcracker to your next holiday concert with this classy bit of humor. Much of Tchaikovsky's original material is used in this a cappella setting. "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" - This traditional holiday favorite comes alive in an exceptionally creative a cappella setting from Jeff Funk. It's the perfect sequel to Jeff's highly successful "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy." Sure to be a hit with both singers and audiences! Also included is "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", one of our most performed popular Christmas songs that is most often identified with Judy Garland's stirring performance. This new Russ Robinson setting with its rich a cappella harmonies is simply marvelous. Your audience and singers will all delight in hearing this exceptional Christmas favorite.

Thinking of the warm-up as a "mini voice lesson," you can reinforce concepts with consistent encouragement, criticism, problem-solving and praise. This practical volume will help the conductor provide purposeful leadership and develop artistry in each individual through exercises that build styles such as Swing, Latin and Rock using solfege and scat syllables as well as tone and blend in ballad style. Review: This CD is designed for young elementary school aged singers to learn how to warm up their voice in a healthy fun way. The volume begins with advice on healthy singing, including words on posture, breathing, and diction. Vocal warm ups follow in patterns broken up into three separate vocalizes: Singing numbers, Singing syllables and Singing solfege. Musical terms such as major scales, chords, octaves, staccato and legato are sung through and explained. The goal of Voice Lessons To Go for Kids is to develop good healthy confident voices as well as to develop children's theoretical knowledge about music, creating good singers on the road to being young musicians.

Review: The aim of these Vocalises is to render the voice sufficiently flexible and mellow to execute easily and elegantly the coloratura and embellishments found in the works of our great composers. Proceeding from the principle, that it is unpractical to practice a variety of difficult passages at the same time, I begin with two, three, and four tones, then advancing progressively to more difficult exercises; leaving it to the teacher to transpose them a semitone higher or lower. However, in order to avoid the monotony and lassitude which are almost inseparable from a strictly methodic in a musical and agreeable form; and have made them very short, to prevent overexertion of the voice. Following its avowed purpose, this work contains no exercises for sustained tones; and it will suffice to sing daily a few long-sustained tones, before taking up these exercises. The results obtained with this method, and its approbation by several of the highest musical authorities, justify my hope, that it will find a favorable reception.

A general knowledge of the instrument often helps the student to clarify a question of tone production. PART II, forming the major portion of the book, consists of basic, fundamental vocalises carefully selected to develop the specific voices for which the book is written. PART III presents the important elements of diction in the five languages most commonly used in singing: English, Italian, French, German and Spanish.
