Exaudi de la Havana Choir

The "Exaudi" choir (exaudi, "listen" in Latin) was founded by its director Maria Felicia Perez in 1987. Its prestige is great, not only in Cuba but in several other countries of the American continent and also in Europe, where it has received important prizes, placing it among the more eminent of professional chamber choirs. Its members, graduated of the Higher Institute of Art of La Havana the National School of Music of Cuba and in such divers departments as that of choral conducting, musicology, guitar or trumpet playing, to give an example of their versatility, interpreting representative works from the XVth to XXth century with the same fluidity and assurance, and not only Cuban and Latin-American music, sacred pieces and negro spirituals. The choir has given concerts in Cuba, Hungary, Venezuela, Spain, Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France, Canada, Belgium and Italy, not only with great success, but its fresh and impeccable musical style has been universally recognised.

"Exaudi" have participated in many European choral competitions, receiving the prestigious 1er Prize in the international "Bela Bartok" Choir Competition at Debrecen (Hungary, 1990); the 1st Folklore Prize, 3rd Poliphony Prize, Grand Prix of the competition, and the Public Prize at Tolosa (Spain, 1992); Grand Prix Europeen of Choral Singing at Carna (Bulgaria, 1993); the 1st Prize of Festival Harmony at Lindennolzhausen (Germany, 1993); the 1st Folklore Prize and Prize for the finest interpretation os a Basque work, at Tolosa (Spain, 1993); and the 1er Prize for Poliphony at Torrevieja (Spain, 1994).

They have made recordings of many works universally known, apart from those of Cuban and Latin-American origin. "Exaudi" are the first choir in the world to have recorded these unknown carols by Esteban Salas, and in a version which without any doubt will remain paramount from now on.

Coro Exaudi gives us another taste of the music of Esteban Salas on Un Barroco Cubano. This CD includes a Requiem Mass (featuring the Benedictine Monks of Silos, Spain) as well as works composed for Christmas. "Que dulce melodia" is particularly lovely. This delightful music is a wonderful example of Latin choral music of the period.

On El Gran Barroco, Coro Exaudi teams up with the Peruvian ensemble Capilla Virreinal, led by Andres Santa Maria. Together, the groups explore the Baroque music of Latin America. The composers featured on this disc range from those who never went to the New World, but whose works were widely performed there (Carlos Patiqo), Americanised Spaniards like Araujo, and Americans like Moraes Pedrozo, whose Te Deum is perhaps the high point of this recording. The a cappella processional hymn Hanaq Pachaq (Track 1), which is sung in the Incan language Quechua, is hauntingly beautiful. Baroque music from Latin America is not often performed so every opportunity to hear it should be taken.
